EXPLANATION. —In the Reporter of
April 11th, the Report of the Treasurer of
th j County S. S. Association covers one year
-Sept. 1865 to Sept. 1866.
fn a few instances, collections, taken up
previous to the latter date, were not sent in
until several months afterward, and of
course could not appear in that report but
will be acknowledged in the next.
The contribution from Woodsido S.
school, Maj. E. W. Hale, Superintendent,
is an example. Our friends may be assured
that whatever is contributed to the S. S.
Missionary work of the county wili be
faithfully credited as soon as received and
duly acknowledged in the printed reports.
If any omission or mistake should occur,
we shall be glad to have it pointed out and
promptly corrected. C.
BKfr* Mansfield is thoroughly alive
on the subject of temperance. A correspon
dent of the Northern Tier Gazette says : Our
good people were favored Friday evening
with a temperance address by M. H. Cobb,
of Wellsboro. A large audience assembled
and much interest was manifested in the
pause. My. Cobb has a happy faculty of
speaking in a common sense way ; he ap
pealed to the reason more than to the pas
sions of the people ; he stated just what is
true and just, what no intemperate man,
t-ven, could take exception to. The reform
- in good progress here ; our citizens are
a ' asleep, but have caught the spirit which
0 now felt in so many places. We hope to
make it not only a dishonorable act to sell
intoxicating liquors in this village without
license, but to elevate a moral standard that
ill shall so regard it.
On Thursday last, Hiram 03-
i.orne and his two sons, Robert and Thom
as, young men grown, and the Methodist
minister at Ovid, and Prof. Lock) of Lima
College, started in a sail boat from Shel
drake, on Cayuga Lake, to go to Ithaca.
The wind was pretty high at the time, and
when nearly opposite Kidder's Ferry a sud
den gust overset their boat. The persons
in the boat all succeeded in clinging to it
-oid finally, it is supposed, partially righted
it. when another gust of wind again threw
it over and this time throwing the elder Mr.
Osborne, and his youngest son, clear into
the Lake. Before assistance came they
were drowned. In the mean time the ferry
boat went, to the assistance of the sail boat
and saved the three remaining clinging to
it. They were a good deal chilled and ex
hausted, and the young Mr. Osborne had
<• iceived considerable water in his stomach
.rid chest: but they have ail recovered
\t the latest advices they had not found the
1 -.dies of those drowned. The water is
.bout 60 fathoms deep where they wore
•howned, which is about i of a mile from
the shore. Mr. Osborne had about 3-5,000
n money on his person, which he was bring
ing to Ithaca for deposit.

What security can be better than this :

7-30 TREASURY NOTES—IMPORTANT NO
TICE.—HoI lers of the August issue of Sev
en-Thirties wishing to convert them into
Five-Twenty Bonds bearing six per cent, in
terest i?> gold, can now do so at the First
National Bank of Towanda.
This is probably the most favorable time
to make the conversion. If delayed until
maturity of the notes, the rush will be so
great that the Treasury Department will be
unable to supply the Bonds promptly.
In making the exchange, the interest will
he allowed on the Seven-Thirties to date of
conversion, and the back interest on the
Five-Twenty Bonds paid to same date, in
currency. This interest will be returned to
holders of the Bonds July Ist, in coin, mak
ing a clear profit to them of whatever the pre
mium on gold is at that time.
Compound Interest Notes—June and Ju
ly Seven-Thirties, also received in exchange
for the new 5-20 Bonds.
Any further information desired in regard
to the above, will be cheerfully given by
calling at the bank.
