interest of his partner in the Railway Din
ing Saloon at Hornellsville, N. 5". This
Saloon, under BROWSE'S management, has
already acquired a wide-spread reputation
as being the best '* eating place " on the
line of the Erie Railway.
UHRISTOPER SLATER, for many years
host of the Brainard House, Elmita, died
recently at sea. off Hatteras, of yellow fev
er, and received an ocean burial. He was
returning from Australia.
FATAL ACCIDENT. —On Friday after
noon, March 22d, a son of Andrew Hays
residing near Cogan Station, Lycoming
county, aged 18 years, was killed by the
discharge of his gun, the contents entering
bis side, passing up into the region of the
heart, causing death in a very short time.
When discovered he was still living, but in
a few moments breathed his last, uncon
scious of his condition. The presumption
is, that in stepping into the boat he hit the
gun with such force as to cause its dis
charge. Another warning to those who
handle fire-arms. The unfortunate victim
belonged to a highly respectable family and
v, - a young man of more than ordinary
promise.
CASUALTY.— It becomes our pain
ful duty to record the death of Miss Sallie
A. Eves of this city, under very distressing
circumstances. On Thursday afternoon,
March 21st, while visiting at Mr. Fores
man s in the upper part of the City she
mistook the cellar door for one entering in
to the parlor and fell with such force against
the brick flue in the cellar that injuries
were occasioned of so serious a nature as at
.-•net to deprive her of reason, in which
audition she remained for 27 hours, when
•foath terminated her earthly existence.—

i the Erie Railwa'y at Mast Hope, Dela
are Division, on Tuesday night last, by
which the Engineer, Geo. Elbridge, was in
stantly killed, the fireman aud several pass
engers severely injured. Among the latter

one leg badly bruised. The accident was
caused by tfie Lightning Express running
into a car loaded with iron which was eith
er accidentally left on the track, or over
taken before it could be got out of the way.

thrown from the truck and much damaged.
.SEVERE TEST OF A BRIDGE. —The new
iron bridge across the Chemung at Cfie
lnuug. constructed by Mr. Bishop of Osve
go. was tested on Tuesday last. Four of
the heaviest engines of the road, weighing
with their tenders 75 tons each, making an
aggregate of 300 tons, we re placed at the
center of a span, and w.tb that severe test
the span settled but one inch, and regained
ib position again upon the engines being
removed. Hugh Riddle, the General Su
perintendent of the road, H. D. V. Pratt,
Superintendent of this Division, the Super
intendents of the Delaware and North
Western Divisions and many other officers
oi the road were present, and they pro
nounce it the best bridge on the line of the

FIRE IN KEENEYVILLE. —About 3 o'.
clock last Wednesday morning, flames were
discovered issuing from the store building
of Messrs. Card, Staples A Co., Keeney
ville. and such was the headway of the fire
that the building and contents were soon
in ashes. An attempt was made to save
some of the goods, but it resulted in noth
ing of moment.
The loss is variously estimated, but may
be put down, at a rough calculation, at
*BOOO. Upon this was an insurance of
$OOOO. Tioga Agitator.
At a meeting of the Bradford
County Teacher's Association, held at Le-
Kaysville Feb. Bth and 9th, a committee
wes appointed, to examine and reccommend
a series of text books, for the use ot the
common Schools in the County.
In accordance with that appointment, the
committee met at the Court House. Towan
da. March 23d. A quorum being present an
•i ganization was affected,and the following
resolutions passed.

7-30 TREASURY NOTES — IMPORTANT NO
TICE. Holders of the August issue of Sev
en-Thirties wishing to convert them into
Five-Twenty Bonds bearing sir per cent, in
terest in gold, can now do so at the First
National Bank of Towanda.
This is probably the most favorable time
to make the conversion. If delayed until
maturity of the notes, the rush will be so
great that the Treasury Department will be
unable to supply the Bonds promptly.
Iu making the exchange, the interest will
be allowed on the Seven-Thirties to date of
conversion, and the back interest on the
Five-Twenty Bonds paid to same date, in
currency. This interest will be returned to
holders of the Bonds July l.vt. in coin, mak
ing a clear profit to them of tchatever the pre
mium on gold is at that time.

ly Seven-Thirties, also received in exchange
for the new 5-20 Bonds.

that the process of sitting Coal Asheß is at
tended with much inconvenience and an
noyance from dust, Ac., and unless the
ashes are sifted much coal will be wasted
that can be used after sifting. In the Amer
ican Cooking Stove this disagreeable pro
cess is entirely overcome by the ingenions
arrangement of an ash sifter, in the hearth
or ash box. of the stov-, by means of which
after the grate is damped into th ash box
the ashes can be sifted in a moment, with
the ash box all closed, and without any
dust in the room, and the coal and cinders
are all retained iu a separate apartment,
and can be returned to the tire chamber, or
be removed elsewhere, and the ash pan can
then be removed containing only the ashes
without any dust whatever. This arrange
ment does away with the old fashioned ash
sifters, and must commend itself to all, and
is another long stride toward perfection,
and must add largely to the already extend
ed reputation of this deservedly popular
stove. This improvement is fully secured
by letters patent.
