" The adaptation of Nature to thf happi
ness of Mankind."
t&- We reported in our last week's
issue, what was the prevailing repott at the
time we went to press, that the residence of
Judge Hyatt of Nichols, had been destroyed '
by fire. This, we have since found, was an
erior, and we gladly correct it. The resi
lience which was burned was that, we be
lieve, of Cyrus Evans, some distance back '
from Mr. Hyatt's.- Ortego Times. ! <

PARINO BCRGLARV.—The house of Mr-
Joshua Tompkins of Spencer, was entered
by thieves, Christmas Eve., while the fam- j •
ily was absent, between the hours of six and j j
eight. They effected an entrance by fore- J ,
ing open two doors, one fastened by a hook, | ]
the other having a wedge ov :r the latch.— j i
After ransacking a bureau, from which they ,
took a pocket-book containing about fifteen 1 ,
. cents, they proceeded to force open a safe j |
weighing about 700 lbs., using an old axe, i j
which they found under the shed. Failing | ]
to open the door, alter having broken the ]
hinges, they chopped a hole through the . j
lower panel of the door into the body of the ;
safe. In the drawers to which they gained (
access, were only a few shillings in silver. ,
In one of the upper draw ers were a number j
of bond's which they did noi succeed in ,
reaching probably being interrupted in their |
work, by the return of the family. The ,
thieves were tracked quite a distance, and j ,
it is hoped they may be arrested in a few ,
days:-- Onega Times. ' ■

ARREST AND TRIAL OF BITRGLARR.—We
mentioned in a previous issue the fact of j
the arrest of the burglars who robbed the
safe of the Howard Express Company at 1
this place a year ago last July. They were ;
brought to Troy on Thursday night last;
and we receive from Mr. John A. Hinsey,
City Marshal ot Laporte, Indiana, the par
ticulars of their arrest. Three weeks ago |
Thursday night two men and their wives
went to Laporte and put np at the Meyers
HOHSC, registering their mimes as L. G.
Harwood and——Baldwin. Next day. the
Marshal observed them upon the street iu
close conversation, not far from one of the
banks, and his suspicions were aroused.—
He followed them.found where they put up, i
discovered they had given no place of resi- j
deuce on the register. That night about 11
o'clock he again saw them come out of a
saloon, and following he saw them pass
their hotel, and keeping within a proper 1
distance, watched them during their ram
bles till two o'clock, when they returned to
their hotel. In this trip, which was made ]
in the rain, they visited four banks and
made observations for future use. Next
day he tried to make their acquaintance, 1
but was not very successful, their suspic- |
ions having been aroused. Saturday night j j
they went to one of the telegraph offices, !
anil sent a dispatch to Elkhart, Indiana : !
"A. McGregor, Elkhart, Indiana. IVhen (
will you send that flour ? Answer. L. G. 1
Garwood i'' ~ The Marshal interpreted this j ]
to mean that a man was wanted, and would ' j
probably be in on the first train, which was i i
on Monday. He then went to an Irishman, I
named Daly, who kept a saloon which they j "
frequented, and asked him if they had left i
anything with him. He said they had , and ; (
on being questioned, showed the Marshal j
their small valise, in which he found a com- ;
plete set of burglars' tools and a revolver j
loaded and capped. He told Daly not to 1
let this go if calle i for, but to detain them
in conversation till he was sent for. On I
Monday, at ten o'clock A. M., McGregor
came from Elkhart and proceeded immedi
ately to the Meyers House, where he called
lor Baldwin and Harwood. Hi about twen
ty minutes they came out all together and j
proceeded to one of the depots, where they :
made enquiries about the trains. On their
return, the Mayor, Marshal and policeman
arrested and searched them. On the per- i
son of McGregor were found a pair of nip- *
pers, a burglar's tool for turning keys in |
locks, and in an inside vest pocket a 101 l of
bonds, done up very tight, evidently so
that they might be easily flung away. They , J
seemed much disconcerted by the discove
ry of their toils, and refused to answer
questions. The Marshal supposing the
bonds stolen, sent telegrams to New York *
and Chicago, the latter of which was an- j
swered in person by Major Pinkerfon, Chief
uf the iHjteKtivhflqroß.'; ,'Jte iiirried a list ot j
bonds stolen in various robberies, and found
the numbers of the bonds to coy respond |
with those stolen from Troy. Thtf roll con- j
tained id SIOO bonds, 11 SSO. and two SSOO J I
ponds. Mr. B. A. Long was sent for to I
identify the men, which he did at once, se- !
leeting them from 13 prisoners who were ' j
confined in the same room. A writ of hnh
us corpus was issued, and after much pre- ,
liminnry delay a requisition was made by
the Governor of Pennsylvania, and or. j
Thursday lust, they were brought In re, in )
charge of Mr. Hinsey and Mr. Bangs, for
trial. The preliminary trial before Esquire
Carnochan. on Satotday, was an interesting 'I
one; conducted on the part of the Com- t
monwealth by Messrs. E. B. Parsons and
W. H Caruochan, and on the part ol the '
defendants by Messrs. F. Smith and Delos
Rockwell. It resulted in so far establish- I '
ing their guilt, as to send them to await tri
al at the next term of Court in February.— '

of last week, while Mr. Emmons, agent of I
the Erie Railway at Great Bend, was a j
supper, the ticket office was entered, and
the money drawer robbed of seventy dol- j
