gtpifuUrai. How to make Stone Wall. Another very excellent method to rid the" iniid of stone is to put them into walls— is. t the nondescript, disjointed appologies i• too often greet our sight in passiug tor nigh the country, which look as if dump <• 1 (nit of a cart in zig-zag form—the own ci s of which deserve to be indicted by a grand jury and sentenced to spend their (i ys wandering upon "John Brown's Tract," without benefit of clergy—but straight, firm, trim-built ones, such as farmers, wor thy of the name, adorn their premises with. There is a right and a wrong way to build vails, as well as to do other things, and if we commence right we shall be quite sure to end right. In soft and loose soil there should be a ditch dug the width of the bot tom of the wall and from one to two feet in depth, and filled in with such small stone as are unfit to put in the body of the wall. This serves to drain oil the water from the surface and prevent the ground from heav u . which is the usual cause of walls fal -1 town. If they pass over ridges and ass hollows, there should be outlets at r. it angles with the ditch at the bottom i. .• ridges to convey away the water; (i rwise the ditch will remain full, and in c hd weather freeze and gradually force out tii - stone from their position, when the wall of course, will tumble down. When the small stone are filled in the ditch, draw and roll on them the large ones to form the bottom of the wall ; they should be well secured in their places and made perfectly solid, as the whole structure rests upon them. The base of the wall should not be more than two and a half feet wide, unless the stones are very large, when they may project beyond the average width.— Do not lay more than one course of stone without binding them by others that reach through the entire width ; never suffer the sides to be laid up and the centre filled in with small stone. Pay off such a workman and send him away without his dinner—he deserves to fast for the imposition. It is cheaper to build the wall when the stone • drawn and finish the work up at once, ie iviug nothing behind to be cleared up ; b i. this is not always practicable nor very < utial. A wall is strongest that has a gradual slope on both sides from the hot tun upwards ; four feet is a sufficient i i ght, hut they may be built four and a h.nt feet if preferred. There should be a course of large stone laid upon the top to prevent the displacement of the smaller ones by animals and bipeds, and to give it a more finished appearance ; some place the earth taken from the ditch against the wall, forming a light bank, but this should not be done, as the action of frost upon it, has a tcndancy to loosen the stone. 1 have said nothing about putting sticks in the wall ; they are an advantage, and when walls are built of cobble stone.bticks should invariably be used. They add some what to the expense, but supposing that farmers act ou the principle that whatever is worth doing is worth doing well, the in crease cost should not prevent their use.— They are easily and quickly made, either by being rived out of any free-grained wood, or by sawing that which is tough or cross grained into half-inch boards and cutting them the desired length ; by this last meth od, if laid in regular courses, a beautiful and permanent wall is made. The sticks or boards, on account of the dry state they are kept in by the stone, lust a long time. Some object to walls as being expensive to build, and often needing repairs, and as being cumbrous and unsightly ; but I think those who keep a correct account of the cost of construction and material, will find the balance in their favor when compared with the cost of a vail or board fence. Be sides, the material of the former is indes tructible, while that composing the latter is very perishable, and each year is becom ing more scarce and expensive. \\ alls also answer the double purpose of lidding the land of stone and as a safe guard for its productions. As to repairs, a yowl wall will need none for the first dozen years ; after that time an occasional spot may need some attention, but much of it will stand firm one half of the three score and ten years of man's alotted life, while a rail or board fence will often be prostrated almost its entire length, and nuiat as often be rebuilt, with a loss of material. A rail is also found thrown off, or a board loose, frequently during the season. As regards i t auty, Ac., I think a well-finished, syste matical wall, when contrasted with tlie ir regular, dilapidated worm fence of the coun try, will not suffer in compai ison. A nice board or picket fence may be as ornamen tal. lam inclined to think that some far mers suppose walls to be a sort of half har dy production, and they need protection ii in the manner they screen them from the elements and observation, by means of the ciders, brambles, thistles, weeds, Ac., that are suffered to grow up around them.' This would seem to be the only conclusion to be arrived at, unless they are thus suffered to grow as ornamental. One would suppose that, did they desire ornamental trees, shrubs, flowers, Ac., they would place them around their dwellings ; but, on the contra ry, such farms are almost invariably desti tute of these surroundings. Farmers, make at least one of your outside fences of walls, .v do not longer attempt to till the soil while it is encumbered with stone.— Ex. (YRE FOR HEAVY HORSES.— Having had a large experience with animals afflicted with the disease in question, always with suc cess, with a small amount of "labor, I sub mit the following : First, procure (if you have not one already), a head halter, and tie the horse so that he cannot eat the bed ding ; give for a few days but little food, and that wet, not more than half the ueua'l quantity, which will relieve the breathing • alter which, nutritious food is fed liberally w'ih grain, and less hay, and-so long as you do 80, your horses will not have the heaves. If the owner wishes to hurry recovery, a dose of physic,(an ounce of powdered aloes,) w ill unload the bowels quicker. I have owned several heavy horses, and alter treating them as stated above, I have doubted whether they ever had the disease, Kit after (by accident) a large amount of hay had been devoured, the distressed breathing and doubled action of the flanks reasserted the facts.- Corr. Mass. Plough man. J TEMPERATURE IN BUTTER-MAKING.— Accord ing to experiments made by Phode, thc tem perature of the cream affects— 1. The time required to make the butter ; the colder, the longer. 2. the quantity of the butter ; the colder the cream the greater the quantity. 3. I pon the quality of the butter—cold cream producing the best. Hence, although by using warm cream there is a saving of time, there is a loss in quantity and quality. Jf' f " rtho sir."
