A meeting of the Athens Lyceum
was held at their Reading Room, on Tuesday even
ing last. A permanent organization was effected
by the election of the following officers for the en
suing year :
President —J AS. B. GOODMAN,
l ice Presidents—E. A. SPALDING, F. L. WELLES.
Recording Secretary — EDWAßD HERRICK, Jr.
i r responding Secretary — FßANK G. PATRICK.
Financial Secretary — J ASON WRIGHT.
Treasurer —CHART.ES T. HULL.
Librarian — JOHN C. WELLES.
The Society will hereafter'• meet on Wednesday
evening of each week. The Reading Room will
be open from half-past six till 'ten every evening,
Sundays excepted.
POWDER MILL BLOWN UP. —The drying
buuse and magazine belonging to Messrs. Rand &
Co., Powder manufactory, Bandsville, four miles
below Carbondale, were both blown up on Monday
evening last at half-past six o'clock. We learn
that some forty tons of powder were deposited in
the two buildings. The casualty occurred while
the employees all were at tea and fortunately no
one was killed. The explosion of the two build
uje's, although some distance apart, was almost
simultaneous. The report in this city, distant
eleven miles was almost deafening, and the shock
was very violent. We learn that it was likewise
felt at" Tunkhannock, Wilkes-Barre and other
places distaut thirty or forty miles. Wo have been
unable to ascertain the amount of the loss.— Scran
ton Register.
The force of the above explosion was distinctly
felt in this vicinity, and various conjectures indul
ged in as to its cause. On Hollon Hill, three miles
from this place, the windows in dwellings were so
violently shaken, its to excite apprehensions of an
earthquake. The flash of the explosion was also
distinctly seen at this place.
ENCOUNTER WITH A BUCK. —One day last
week, DANIEL L. JEXKS, Esq., was attacked by a
tame Duck owned by J. J. BEERS, which had stray
ed away and emerged from the woods on tho hill
near Mr. Jenks" house. The latter recognizing
him, attempted to coax him near the house for the
purpose of feeding him, when the animal made a
sudden attack and came very near killing Mr.
■Jenks, the struggle lasting over a quarter of an
Lour, when Mr. Jenks was relieved from his peril
ous situation by the assistance o> Mrs. Jenks and
Mrs. Cable, who succeeded in getting a rope around
the Buck's neck and choking him until he gave up
the contest and galloped off into the woods—Mr.
Jenks sustaining considerable injury in one of his
hands and on different parts of his body. The
Buck was subsequently pursued and shot by some
:. f Mr. Jenks' neighbors.— Owego Gazette.
ITEMS FROM THE TIOGA COUNTY Agitator :
t-t 'iftENT.—We learn that as some parties were
running a log-train on the Tioga R. R. between Ir
*in Center and Corning, on Sunday, they ran into
a lumber train standing on the track, throwing 1C
cars off the track, and killing one man and wound
ing two or three others. All the Monday morning
trains were detained in consequence.
IN CHATHAM. —We learn that the dwelling
of Mr. J. W. BURRELL, of Chatham, was destroyed
hy fire on the 26th nit. The loss falls heavily upon
a laboring man, and no doubt the hand of aid will
he extended by his neighbors.
CATTLE DlSEASE. —lsolated cases of a disease
similar to murrain, but somewhat more rapid in
its course, has appeared in Chatham. Some fear
that it is the Rinderpest. Probably it is only a
undent form of murrain. It is to be hoped that
it will not become epidemic. Whenever an ani
tsal is attacked the owner should kill it at once
bury it deep. This may save thousands of
mllars to cattle owners.
Horrid AND FATAL ACCIDENT. —One of the
-est painful accidents that ever occurred in our
v, took place at the house of EDWARD I, YON, on
t .Saturday evening. A lady of the house had
1- to the basement to see to the fire in the fur-
I -see, when a young girl, Miss MARY BCSSLER, aged
3 ■ it 15 years, followed her to get a scuttle of coal.

1 -' r clothes were on tire in a moment. She became
1 'ild with fright and ran up the stairs screaming

I "'reams and, thinking the house on fire, went in,
lid Judge PACKER arriving about the same time,

Lor girl's clothes were almost wholly burned from
k body, and the flesh on her arms and body burn
*l black. She lingered in great agony until Sun

Offering. Her parents reside near Hughesville.

NARY SHOWER.— It was said, by those
who a tend to the coming of comets and "sich,''
that there would occur between • the 12th and 15th
of this month, a Meteoric Shower. Up to the
present time the "shower" hain't "arriv." But
if our towns iolk have been disappointed in not
seeing the meteors "drap," there is no reason
why they should be without Oysters, Fish, Clams

J. K. Fleming—Sir : We heve introduced Osgood's
series o: B adore, Bnrtt's Grammar and Dean's Arith
metic Into the Monroe ton High School, and alter hiv

--that t't ey take rank with the very bes*. i'hey give en

Principal oi Moni-oc-tou High School.
Ouwell, Sept. 5,186:1.
Mr. J. I£. Fleming—Having examined O-gooa's se
ries of Readers, and ! oucd them admirably adapted to
the wants of o .r schools, I take pleasure iu recom
mending them to teachers and friend# of education
generally. My short acquaintance with 'he books has
impressed me "so favorably, that i am a'-no f constrain
ed to say .uli others, ■•They are emphatically the
cheapest aud - est aeries now pubii.-i.ed.
Your.-, respectfully,
Mrs. . U. SALMON.
iSiIKSHEQCIN, Sept. 3, iB6O.
Mr. J. K. Fleming—Sir : i have looked over the
specimen books you leit wi U me, a:.J am mnch pleased
with all ot them, particularly so with lire series of Os
good's .Readers. i'ney are emphatically Progressive
works, and moreover the steps of tceir progression are
so carefully taken, and so seeur ly planted, that 1
cannot see how any teacher who lokows the directions
ot the author can tail oi tiie highest success.
The exercises in articulation at the opening ot all
the 1-sson.s lithe Primary numbers, afford a pastime
as pleasant as it is profitable to those pupils whose
teachers cuter upon them with a pint and a relish,
and the rules and txercises in Inflection, Emphasis,
Ac., in the more advanced numbers, are so definite and
plain that all who attend to them en not fail to be
come good critics as well as good readers.
Ie; :i: exprc s' lu 'efly ' toy high appreciation of
thsec ,• rU- "aud while i would by no means depre
ciate the bander series iur tbe g-d they have done,
I yet rejoice that so great an advance on them has
been reached by the Osgood.Progressive Readers.
Yours. Ac.,
Mrs. is. Ei.IZA GIBSON.
