STRANGE FATALITY.—Near the road be '-'".011 Ltlloy and Canton, may be seen the foun • 'ti-m for a barn, with a few sticks of blackened d charred timbers lying about it. The history ot l - ls foundation and the structure which was at '•- .'ted to be placed upon it is a remarkable one. ' - proprietor of the barn wishing to remove it j froia one side of the road to the other, invited some of his neighbors to assist him. In taking the timbers down, ono of the large beam 3 fell, instant ly i dling one of the persons engaged. The job *as then abandoned tor a few days, when it was again resumed, and the barn was removed to the afoundation fixed for it. Here another very se rioxs accident occurred. A bright little boy—son of the proprietor of the barn—was struck by a fall tag timber and killed. The work was again sus pended fur a few days, at the end of which time t:-> work was commenced again, and completed.— A strange fatality yet awaited the structure. No - or had it been completed than it was struck by lightning and entirely demolished. This occur r> 1 .several years since, but the decaying walls and tinibt rs have never been touched. They still re man to remind the neighborhood of the sad tale connected with them. . M. (J. A.—The first lecture of the course, before the Young Mens' Christian Associa tion, was delivered by S. M. HEWLETT, Esq., of Philadelphia. Although but partial notice of the lecture was given, a very good audience was in at tendance, and we do not exaggerate in the least, when we say that no better lecture Las ever been listened to in this place. Mr. 11. came here an ut ter st; anger, and yet we venture the prediction that hereafter his name will be sufficient to draw uu audience equal to BEECIIER or CHAIXN. On Thursday evening Mr. HEWLETT delivered u free lecture on temperance by request of the Sons of 1 emperance. Long before the hour for the com mencement of the lecture, the house was crowded to overflowing. The lecturer spoke for two hours, during which hardly a person in the house moved, except as he moved them by his inimitable deline ations. He is the most perfect impersonator we ever listened .to. If addresses like his will not arouse our people to action in the temperance cause, we do not know what will. Many consider him equal, if not superior to GOCGH. One of the most profitable and suc c sial meetings ever held in this village was that of Friday night of last week. The Hall was filled <.i(lowing with anxious and intelligent people. hmr..ble speeches were npule by W. S. Lincoln eur candidate for Congress, D. O. Hancock of -Uego and Hon. G. A. Grow of Pennsylvania. Air. II of course made the speech, leaving the oth - '"U the iragments, but all were pungent, forei * and of acknowledged candor. P. I. Hedges l- f'resident.—B'< verly Ad. FRUIT TREES.— The business of furnishing Fruit Trees to the farmers of this County, has be come a large and important one. Very properly fanners are turning their attention to raising l'ruit which from the high price it commands in market! e m hai lly fail in coming years to prove profits i Me. The experience of farmers in buying frui trees from travelling agents, has not in all cases been satisfactory, as they have been furnishec with poor trees, the refuse of tho nursery, anc those coming in such a condition as to be worth less. We had an opportunity last week of examining a lot of fruit trees, from the Seneca Lake Highland Nurseries, of which Col. E. C. FBOST is proprietor, which were being delivered to the purchasers.— They appeared to be ?he best stock of trees w have ever seen, taken up and handled in the bc-si possible manner, and delivered in fine order. Col. FROST'S nursery has a high reputation, and he is one of the most reliable and experienced Horticul turists in the country. EI.HIRA ITEMS.—The Elmira Oil Refinery took fire on Wednesday morning last and was en tirely consumed including 150 barrels of oil. Two men were burned by this sudden and terrific con flagration one of whom died in a few hours. The lire was occasioned by an explosion in the Refin ery, bu: the immediate cause of the explosion is unknown. Loss about SO,OOO. No insurance. As a Miss A\ ise, of Ilcming, Cayuga county, N. The number of people present was estimated at 15,000, and the greatest enthusiasm prevailed. Speaking was had from two different stands in the park. Gov. CIBTIN was one of the speakers. The Advertiser says that "such a turn oiit of soldiers, true as steel to the Union, has not been known since the war closed. They came an imated by the old spirit, wearing their faded uni forms, which had seen hard service before tho en emy, donning their old army badges and renewing their fraternity which they cherished when com rades in arms. There can he no mistake of the re sult, w hen at the sound of alarm, such a rallying follows as causes quakings of fear and terrible tre pidation among Northern Copperheads and Sontlr ern rebels." ®SrTbe fust freight which t>: -• through this place west about 2 P. il. came iu collision on Tuesday last, with a two-horse wagon from Bur lington, belonging to Hon. C. F. Nichols, demol ishing the wagon but doing no oth -r inj try, t frightening horses and driver amazingly. A team had crossed the track ahead of the train and the driver of this not being accustomed to the speed of trains, thought he could do the same, but he paid well for the experiment. The other team be came frightened and ran some distance but did no damage.— Waverly Ad. BSi*. Hon. C. K. ORIENT BCSNIXG FURD.—This burning fiu id which is manufactured in Elmira, N. Y., has been extensively used in New York and New Eng land for the past year, and gives universal satis faction. It is the cheapest light in use, bums one third longer than kerosene, and twice as long as any other fluid manufactured, emitting no un pleasant or offensive sin-, il,burning without smoke or odor, and less injurious to the eyes than any other light in use. It is absolutely non-explosive and entirely safe. The agent for Pennsylvania, Mr. H. W.
