Ganges and Management of diseases in Hogs,
Most of the diseases may be prevented
by proper care in general treatment of
swine, dry, clean and well ventilated apart
ments, proper food of sufficient variety.
The general idea is,it's good enough for the
hog, and every filthy and nauseous thing is
thrown to him—rotten potatoes and fruit,
spoiled bread, highly fermented and decom
posing farinaceous substances, dead ani
mals, from whatever cause, and much other
unwholesome refuse. The thiugs, without
a sufficient admixture of other more whole
some food, together with lying on dung
heaps, inhaling any quantity of deleterious
gas, remaining far too long on muddy and
cold ground, too long exposed iu inclement
weather, are fruitful sources of diseas
es, and it will be found much easier to
guard against these things than to admin
ister medicine to a hog minus his "appetite.
The discovery of any disease iu or on a
pig, should be the watchword for the re
moving him from his companions, if he Jias
any. An unusual appearance of the hair,
or redness of the skin, indicates mange—he
should be well washed with warm water,
soap and brush, then rub most any kind of
oil or grease over him, and repeat the ope
ration in a few days if he does not appear
all right ; if too costive, administer any
purgative as you would to a human subject.
A few doses of dissolved copperas, or of
sulphur, giveu in their feed, will help to
eradicate almost any skin disease. Cop
peras is also good for what is called kidney
worm, indicated by weakness, or the loss
of the use of the hind parts, and still have
a good appetite. When a pig appears crip
pling or unwell, examine and clean out the
orifices in the inside of the fore leg. The
most successful medicine I have ever tried
for tkin disease, and perhaps as a preven
tative of any other disease, is warm water,
soft soap, and brush, frequently applied,
with plenty of good wholesome food given,
not too warm, plenty of wheat straw, in a
dry, sheltered and not tod close a sty. For
diarrhoea or looseness, change the food to a
more binding diet ; whole rye is good, also
corn or flonr, and use common sense, as in
treatment of a human patient, in all cases.
A convenient mode of washing pigs is to
have a narrow, deep store box, put the pig
in—no squealing, or splashing of water
over the operator.
Hogs will feed better and cheaper few in
a sty, say about two, as they will eat their
food more leisurely, keep quiet and conten
ted ; whereas when many are together, they
seem to forget even common respect for
their companions, and rush frantically to
the trough, eat rapidly, knock one another
about, beat off the weaker portion, waste
the feed, and keep up a general excitement.
Country Gentleman.
Garget and its Oure-
At different times I liav: had several val
uable cows affected with the garget, and
some of them have lost the use of a portion
of their udders in consequence of it. A
number of years siuce a cow of mine had
this disease, and a short time after this, a
relation of mine, an old farmer, was visit
ing me, and being in the yard while I was
milking this cow, he inquired what was the
matter with her udder. I told him she had
lost the use of a- part of it by having the
garget. He replied that there was no need
of cows being injured by that—he could
cure the worst case of the disease in three
days—that the hardest case of garget that
he ever saw was cured in less than that
time with a piece of garget root not larger
than a plum, by putting it in her dewlap
for a rowel. He said the effect of putting
in a seaton would be to draw the swelling
from the udder ; that be put it iu the dew
lap, ia order to get the swelling as far from
the udder as could be, and that in thL
place it would be the least trouble to the
cow, as in some cases there would be con
siderable swelling about the seaton. A few
weeks after, this eow of mine had another
attack of the disease. One part of her ud
der was swollen very much and quite hard,
so much that I could get no milk from it.
I now concluded to try the efficacy of a
garget seaton. With a sharp knife I made
an incision in the side of her dewlap, just
forward of ;the brisket, and inserted a
piece of garget root about the size of a
common plum, and then took a stitch with
a needle and thread across the cut, to pre
vent the seaton from slipping out. There
suit was as follows : In about twelve hours
from this time the swelling and hardness in
the udder had diminished considerabty, so
that I could get some milk from it. I no
ticed at this time that the swelling had ex
tended along on her belly toward the bris
ket,and that there was some swelling about
the seaton. In twenty-four hours the swel
ling and hardness in the udder were nearly
gone, that around the seaton much increas
ed, and in less than two days thq cow was
apparently as well as she had been, gave
milk as freely, and as good as usual. The
swelling on her dewlap continued for a few
days, then subsided, and the cut liea.ed up.
The remedy is a safe and cheap one, and
can be quickly and easily applied by any
one without injury to the cow.— Boston Cul
tivator.
Decorate the Homestead-
Next to wholesome food, home pleasures
are necessary to euliven our spirits, promote
our gooa health, ahd give a zest to rural life.
What can give greater satisfaction to a fam
ily of refined taste than to have the grounds
around the homestead decorated with the
beauties of nature so bountifully furnished
us ? The species and varieties ojf trees,
shrubs, roses, vines, &c., are now so numer
ous that a choice selection can be made to
suit every clime, soil and exposure, and to
bloom and fruit all the growing season.—
See them tastefully arranged and gorgeous
ly dressed with foliage of various colors,
and decked with blooms far transcending
the mostly costly jewelry in brilliancy, and
perfuming the air with their fragrance. In
windy days they gracefully bow, prance,
and whirl around like sprightly youth iu the
dance, and the melody of the breeze serves
them for music. How beautiful the picture
and gre it the enjoyment, to those who can
appreciate. It makes a cot a palace, and a
home a paradise ; the owner a king, and
his wife a queen ; it imp .i ts a dignity to !
the manly graces of sons, and lustre to the ;
beauties and virtues ol daughters. The I
passing wayfarer is delighted with the!
scene, and sets it down in his mind as the
abode of the great and good in heart, and
the virtuous and wise in actions.
After planting climbing vines to clothe !
the veranda and a few deciduous trees i
around the housefor shade iu summer, all j
the other trees, shrubs and roses, should be I
so arranged over the lawn that all will be j
seen at one view. Set the more dwarf near
er the house, the taller farther off, arid they
will appear to rise in graceful folds as they
recede from the eye, and the contrast of
size, form and color, of the various individ
uals will show to greater advantage, and
that will give additional graces to their
charm.— Rural Advertiser.

Twenty-five years experience
IN DENTISTRY.—J. S. SMITH, M. D., would re
spectfully iuloi in the inhabitants of Bradford County
that he is permanantly located in Waver!v, N.Y., where
he has been in the practice of his profession for the past
four years. He would say that from his long and suc
cessful practice of 25 years duration, he is familiar with
all the different styles of work done in any and all Den
tal establishments iu city or country, anl inciter pre
pared than any other Dental operator iu the vicinity to
do work the be.-t adapted to the many and different
cases that present themselves oftentimes to the Dentist,
as he understands the art ol making his own artificial
teeth, and has facilities tor doing the same. To those
requiring under sets of teeth he would cull attention to
his new kind of work which consists of porcelain tor
both plate and teeth, and forming a continuous gum. It
is more durable, more naturei iu appearance, and much
better adapted to the gum than any other kind of work.
THo! • in need <>! the same are invited to call and exam
ine specimens. Teeth tilled to last for years and often
t mes for life. Chloroio m, itlur, and •■JV./rous oxide''
administered with perfect suiety, as over tour hundred
patients within the last four years can testify.
I will be in Towanda from the 15th to 30th of every
monfh, at the office of W.K. TAYLOR, (formerly oc
cupied by Dr. O. U. Woodruff.) Having made arrange
ments with Mr. Taylor, I am prepared to do all work iu
the very best style, at his office.
