ELLIOTT—At his residence in Towanda Au
gust 4th 1866, Thomas Elliott, in the 76th year
of his age.
Thomas Elliott sou of William and Lucretia El
liott, was born in eastern New York, August 14.
1790. In company with his father he moved into
Pennsylvania in 1805, subsequently lived some
years in Nichols, N. Y. and came to Towanda iu
July 1822. Familarly known by many his charac
ter and history ueeil but few words. Cheerful and
conten ted himself he desired seeing it in others,
and always exerted him self to contribute to the
happiness of those around him. He was unassu
ming and retiring, especially in the latter portion
of his life.
Beginning life as a laborer ho took an honest
pride as t ;e results of his industry and contented
with a competency, did not desire afiluauce. He
estimated integrity as most essential to the suc
cess of a business life, and his whole life bore evi
dence that he k -nt this in view in all transactions.
Easy as to the collection of debt due him, and
never distressing his debtors, he was exact and
puncluul in nueting his own obligations.
At the close of his life among his most pleasant
recollections was the fact that he had never inten
tionally done any man a wrong. Although pleas
ed with the success of the industrious he despised
cant and arrogance. An industrious husband and
father, his chief pleasure was to be at his home.
Loving and beloved by his little family, his last
words to them, like those of the Patriarch of old,
contained his blessing. During his last iilness he
experienced a firm trust in the mercy of God
through Christ, and within a few days of arriving
at his seventy sixth year, on the morning of Au
gust 4th,without a struggle he fell asleep in Jesus,
as we believe and hope, to awaken in his likeness.
