Gil ford, formerly of Troy in this county, a young man of sterling worth and one who early enlisted in our late struggle for freedom, and served his country faithfully until honorably discharged. Then again enlisted and bravely faced all the dangers incident to the life of a soldier until the close of the war, when he was discharged with honors, and shortly af er Lis return home, (July 13, 1865,) he was mar ried to Miss Eleanor J. Coon of Leßov : and view ing only the bright side of life, they were with every thing to encourage them, looking forward to long years of happiness. But suddenly on the morning of January 31, 1866, while he was unload ng a lord of logs at a mill a short distance from j her father's, he received a severe blow on the head | which terminated his earthly existence, yet he lived some time in the most excrutiating agony, and all was done that superior medical skill could devise, together with the kind care and fervent prayers of his many friends and neighbors ; but all i I vain : and on his twenty-third birthday (Feb. 9, I860,) in the ever welcome home of his tather in-law John Coon, death came and put an end to , his sufferings. His funeral was attended in Troy ! on the 11th, by a very largo concourse of mourn- ! ! iug friends, who deeply feel their loss. REPORTER : —We had the most powerful lec ture in our Academy here, last evening, from Gen. Patton, of Towanda, on temperance, that our peo ple ever listened to. Front his known reputation as a lecturer, persons canto to hear him from a distance of 7 or 8 miles : and notwithstanding the unfavorable roads and weather the house was i crowded, with an attentive and delighted audience. The meeting was organized by appointing C. F. Lafferty, Pres., and Rev. S. F. Brown, Sec ; and j < was opened by prayer by Rev. D. Cook. After the j ■ lecture, the temperance pledge was circulated by j Major C. Avery, A. A. Kinney, C. Fuller and Rev. j S. F. Brown, who got 112 signers to it. While the ) pledge was being circulated, the meeting was ably I addressed by Mr. S. Vosburg, of Wysox. lu an nouncing the numbers who had signed the pledge, j ' Gen. P. said he had the pleasure to announce that Camptown and its vicinity* was now the banner i town of temperance in Bradford coupty. The meeting gave Gen. P. a unanimous vote of thanks for his able and eloquent lecture ; and a proposi tion was made to vote him something more sub stantial : but he thanked the mover for his gener ous offer, and refused to accept any compensation, and said that if his humble efforts should be the means of saving even one fellow being from a drunkard's grave, it would more than compensate : him for his services. Tim meeting was then closed j by a benediction from Rev. M. Brown, and ad- j journed, highly gratified with the entertainment, j Several of our oldest citizens ealled-on the Gen. i at Major Avery's, this morning, to pay him their ; respects ; and he, in turn, called to see some of j his old acquaintances.
