BEV. I'.DWARD I'AYSON IIAMMOXD. In our:
j last we gave a general account of the great revival
!in Towanda. It is not an easy task to describe the :
; pleaching ot Mr. HAMMOND, but we can give some
I of our impressions of him. He is an extemporane
ous speaker, and always preaches from a highplat
: ti irm where he can get as near hispiearers as possi
ble, and be seen from head to foot. It is said that
John I>. (Tough speaks with his coat-tail sometimes 1
as effectually as with his toqgue, and certainly we
have seen some good ideas, or shades of meaning, |
communicated by Mr. HAMMOND from the platform i
which would have been lost behind an ordinary !
pulpit. You may call his gestures, and action on ;
; the stage, theatrical if you please, but we can eer- '
| taiuly see no reason why the Devil should hav, ail
, the good speaking and acting, any more than "nil
j the good singing," as Wesley said. Then again,
j the singing from his little book, the Praises of
Jesus, as published by Bradbury, is made a pow
j erful means of conveying truth, awakening the sin
j ner, directing him to Jesus by some pointed sen
j teuce often repeated in a lively tune, or expressing
j the joy of the belie ver who lias found the Saviour.
' Not confining himsell to any order of exercises, he
. often rests liiinselt during his protracted sermons,
j after some exhausting effort, by singing a hymn, at
; the same time resting the audience lij a change of
| position by their rising, and ventilating the room.
| His discourses are also sandwiched by an ocea
i sional short, strong, earnest prayer, the audience \
| bowing tin ir heads, and sometimes a lews< uti nci s
i are repeated aloud after him by the people.
He is a wonderfully successful preacher. How
I does he do it ? What is his sy- tern ? V.'ccan only
I answei what we think about it. It a man of strong
| bodily constitution, and with the- other physical
i qualifications, prepared by a thorough education, |
! with good abilities, a good fund ot elioice language
; and fine natural powers of eloquence, and inspired
i by grea zeal and i xliaustless energy, starts out in
; early life to prepare himself, and devotes his whole
| soul to one subject and with one object in view, lie
I can almost always do wonders. Nature lias done
: more than we have stated for Mr. HAMMOND, and
I the grace of GOD has done the rest. The result of :
; his success is his strong earnest faith, and his more
than magnetic power of impressing his heareis
with the saving i litli in Jesus. He preaches onlv '
on one subject, but that is as wide as the world,
taith in Jesus, repent, bt-lieve and be saw d " just
now." He comes into a town, or to an individual,
with a confident assurance that admits of no doubt,
I and insists, nay, urges, with en immovable firm-
I uess that that town or prison can ami shall and '
mitsf be converted from the error of their ways and
turn to < hrist. He is so snre of it that you cannot ;
help believing him, and gi m rally he has his own |
way about it. But this off course is onlv the low- !
est aspect of the matter, behind i nil over it all is
the unseen but dei ply felt power of Goo which tie- |
companies tliis man's words, and which soon t-u- I
aides ns to forget the messenger and he. d only;
thg message. " Without parables spake he noth
ing " has been Mr. HAMMOND'S 1, -son in rhetoric.
Not that he is destitute of powers of peisnasion
and alluring in the ordinary forms of pulpit elo
quence. or that la fails to use the m. It is evident '
he could preach as splendid thirdly and fourthly j
sermons as any man. But that isnot his hitsini s.
lie is a mental artist, his serine ns are pictures to
be seen and felt as well as heard. His powers <fi,
illustration aro admirable and inexhaustab! ■. A i
point which any amount of plain r< asoning would '
not convince you of or malic clear, you at < nee ,
concede and remember fore vet afti r,in consi nm nee |
of some little narrative about a five, or a hunch , f
moss, or incident of foreign travel, (a description j
of some picture which you almost see again paint- ,
ed on the wall. }a dangerous bridge, a shepln rd and '
a lamb, or some scripture ineident in which!'
he shows you a meaning you never saw before, or
pc-rhnps a single comparison conveying a world of
truth and meaning like a skillful - troku of a pencil. '
Are his meetings very solemn V If it is a solemn i -
thing to see persons shedding tears for t!• < ir sins, , ,
and for the sufferings of a erui iff. -1 Saviour, then i '
they are very solemn. But if by a soli mnmeeting ;
von mean one where no face shining with joy is 1
seen, and no happy smile is permitted, then they i 1
are not solemn meetings. Mr. II'MY -oxn is a Christ- j J
ian, and w hen lie has finished a series of meetings, ; \
most of his hearers, by the blessing of GOD'S Holy !
Kpirit, are Christians also. Hois always over-th '
ing with a Christian's joy unspeakable, and it is i,t ,
a very contagions character. His meetings prove : j
that t iere is joy on earth n- well -sin heaven when j i
a sinner repenteth. 1
Aside from his own very remarkable qualifications j j
for the work of the eonvi i>-ioii of sinners, he has a j j
great faculty for calling for help in -mother Christ- ! i
inns, and enlisting them also. And one important |
aid in his work, and which gives him >•■ mncli as- J
stired faith, is that he is, and feels that he is back- j J
ed up by much fervent piaytr by Christians when s
he has recently labored, thus continually follow ing ! I
1
him from place to place with an nnseen power ! ,
from on High. i o
. I J
Let us do justice to Mr. HAMMOND, as a man, to j 1
his talents, his zeal, courage and piety: and those ! 1
who deny liiui any of these qualities tan not deny J
what is more important, the reality of the results V
of his preaching. GOD bless him ! is the earnest •**
prayer of thousands, and he is blessed, for - - lie
that convortetli a soul eovweth A multitude of sins."
