A MERITED COMPUMBNT. —The President
| has conferred upon Gen. H. J. MADILL, the brevet
appointment ot Major General, for distinguished
services before Petersburg. This is a deserved
compliment to a brave officer.
BROKE JAlL. —Cyrus 11. W heeler, confined
in jail tor stealing from Nathaniel Kingsley, in
Troy liorouga, effected his escape from our jail, on
Saturday night laet. He was confined in the "dark
; cell, "and by making a hole through the brick
wall, passed iuto the Sheriff's kitchen, and then by
raising the window, into the open air and liberty,
i Wc have heard of " crawling out of a small hole,"
but we doubt if a man of the prisoner's size ever
squeezed himself through as small an opening, on
1 any other occasion. The aperture was 101 by 'Jin
-1 clies. Wheeler was about 5 feet 7 inches iu height,
with chin whiskers. A reward of 550 is offered for i
I his arrest, and return to the county jail. Wheeler i
! has been twice convicted, and sent to the Peniten
j tiary from this County.
