Col. G. W. GREGG, of the 179 th N. Y. V., "for
gallantry and meritorious conduct in the assault

richly merits the high honor thus justly bestowed

ACCIDENT. —On Thursday of last week,
while ZEBULON B. SPALDING, of Athens, Pa., was
driving through the narrows between Athens and
Shesheqoin, his horses became suddenly fright
ened and sprang jfrom the road at a very high
point, precipitating themselves and wagon down a
steep precipice some 25 or 30 feet, lodgiud against
a clump of trees, which alone saved them from
being dashed to pieces several hundred feet below.
One horse was instantly killed and the other badly
injured. Two of his boys, CHARLIE and EDDIE,
went down with the concern, but fortunately were
uninjured. Such a leap could not be made a

RAILROAD MEETING. —At au informal gath
ering of the citizens of Owego on the evening of
the 7th inst., at the Ahwaga House, for the pur
pose of making preliminary arrengements for
meeting and conferring with a delegation of gen
tleman from Auburn, Dryden and other towns, on
thetr way to this and other places, on a tour of in
spection for a proper ltail-road route from Auburn
through Owego to the Pennsylvania Coal regions
at, or near Towanda, H. A. Beebe was called to
the Chair, and D. O. Hancock, Esq., was appoin
ted Secretary.
Appropriate remarks were made by H. A. Beebe,
W. F. Stone, H. L. Bean, J. B. Brush, D. O. Han
cock, Orrin Tinman, Hon. E. S. Sweet, and
others.
On motion of Wm. P. Stone,
Resolved, That Hon. Lyman Truman, Hon. T. L
Chatfield, H. K. Bean, T. C. Pratt and G. S. Leon
ard, be and they are hereby appointed a Commit
tee to wait upon said Delegation on their arrival,
and invite them to a conference with our citizens
upon the subject matter of said proposed Railroad
route, at a public meeting to be held at this place
on Wednesday, the 9th inst.; and said Committee
are hereby empowered to call such meetings at an
hour to be named by them, for the purpose afore
said.
On motion of H. L. Bean, Esq.,
Resulted, That the members of said Committee
have power to substitutions in case they or either
of them cannot attend to the duties aforesaid.

In pursuance of the above call, a meeting of gen- j
tleman from Auburn, Groton, Dryden, Newark
Valley, Owego, and other places, was held at the
Awaga House in the Village of Owego, on Wedns
tlay, the Bth day of August, 1805, to take into con
sideration the propriety of constructing a Rail
road from Sodns Bay via. Auburn, Groton, and
Dryden to Owego and the Coal Mines of Pennsyl
vania.
The meeting was organized by the election of
Hon. Thomas Farrington as Chairman, and H. K.
Clark, Esq., of Groton, as Secretary.
Remarks were made by J. W. Dwight, Esq., and I
Dr. Montgomery, of Dryden, Messrs. Dennis and
Post of Auburn, Truman and Taylor of Owego, and
Lincoln of Newark Valley.
On motion of T. C. Piatt, of Owego, it was
Resolved, That the building of the proposed
Railroad from Owego to Lake Ontario is required
by the farming and commercial interest of ,tlie
country through which the Road is proposed to be
located, and we do hereby recommend the organ
ization of a company for the purpose of construct
ing said Road.
On motion of W. P. Stone,
Resolved, That each Town or village on the line
of the proposed Railroad appoint a committee of
five to conter together and take necessary meas
ures for organization.
Moved and carried that the committee for the
Village of Owego consists of Lyman Truman, T.
C. Piatt, 11. L. Bean, J. J. Taylor, and W. P.
Stone, A. P. Storrs and T. I. Chatfield were added
to the said committee.
Moved and carried that Mr Post of Auburn, act
as a committee to correspond with different com
mittees and call future meetings.
Moved that our next meeting shall be held at
Auburn subject to the call of the general chairman
Mr. Post.
Moved and carried that the proceedings be pub
lished in Owego, Auburn and Tompkins County
papers.
BSE. We are pleased to learn that the
Young Men's Christian Association of this place
has fitted up the rooms over EDDY'S Clothing store
for a Public Reading Room. This will be a'much
better place for young men to spend their leisure
than in drinking saloons and gambling holes.
We also learn that it is the intention of the As
sociation to erect a building of their own soon—a
gentleman of this village having generously pre
sented a building lot for their nse. Fifteen hun
dred dollars have already been subscribed toward
the building fund, and the work will be commenced
as soon as three thousand dollars can be raised.
TEACHERS' INSTITUTES. —The County Teach
ers'lnstitute* will be held as follows: Shc-she
quin, Monday, Sept. 4 ; Leßaysville, Sept. 11 ;
Leonard Hollow, Sept. 18 ; Canton, Sept. 25 ;
Spring Hill, Oct. 2. They will commence on Mon
day at 2 o'clock p. ni., and close Friday noon.
Every teacher in the county is expected to attend
(luring the entire session of one or more of there
Institutes, prepared to enter heartily into the work
of making them interesting and profitable. School
Directors, Clergymen and citizens generally, are
earnestly invited to favor us with their presence

of the Ward House, is now occupying the depot
eating saloon of the Erie Railway, at Hornellsville,

travelers daily, elicits universal praise. No one
knows how to keep a hotel better than BROWER, and
his eating saloons at Hornellsville and Avon have
become celebrated all over the country.
