proud that she furnished so brave a man to lead
her boys on to daring and to victory. Long may
he live to enjoy the blessings which have been se
cured to us, as a Nation, by the terrible struggle
through which we have passed.
Mr. GRIDLEX, of Orwell, followed the Gen. with
some pertinent remarks, giving disunionists, as he
always does, a terrible scattering. Prof. OLMSTED,
of Windsor, N. Y., was then introduced. He made
an earnest and patriotic appeal to his auditors
which, judging from the sensation produced, was
highly appreciated. After singing "The .Flag of
our Union Forever," by Profs. TOWNEE and Buss,
and Music by the Band, and the passage of sundry
resolutions, the assemblage dispersed, greatly
pleased with the demonstrations of the day, and
with the repledge to stand up for the liberty, and
rights, and privileges, and happiness, and well
being of all mankind, and with the determination
to defend the stars and stripes of our glorious old
Union forever.

Nation's birth day, ever participated in by the peo

The officers of the day (not including myself of
Course), Speakers, Chaplafti, Header, Singers, Band,
Committee of Arrangements, Table Committee,and
young ladies, who waited on our brave boys, just
from the field of carnage, at the tables ucquited
themselves creditably, and with satisfaction to the
people. The ladies especially are entitled to great
praise for the guod taste displayed in the arrange
ment of the table, and for their attention to all
who gathered around it. The ceremonies of the
day were both interesting and edefyiug, and will
long be remembered by the ltoinans. A. F. H.

YANKEE BOYS CONCERT. —The Yankee
Boys gave a Concert at Moore's Hall in this Boro',
on Saturday evening last, which was well attended,
and it is hardly necessary to say that the audience
was highly pleased and amused by the perfor
mance. There are no better singers than the Yan
kee Boys, and we are pleased to know that their
reputation as first class vocalists is becoming gen
eral, their Concerts throughout the country being
always well attended by appreciative audiences.

FIISK"' WE are gratified to learn from the
Charleston (S. C.) Courier, that Capt. JOSEPH T.
PRATT, Provost Marshal of that city, has just been
promoted to the rank or Major. Maj. PRATT is an
old citizen of this place, and his promotion is pe
culiarly gratifying to us. At the breaking out of
the Rebellion. Mr. PRATT, was employed as a teach
er in Girard College, Phil'a, but abandoned his
position to enlist in the army. His success is well
deserved.

RAILROAD MEETING AT ITHACA. —The follow
ing circular addressed to individuals, we publish
as being of general and important interest in this
community :
"A meeting of the citizens of Cayuga, Tioga,
Tompkins and other counties interested in the con
struction of a Rail Road from Towanda, Pa., to
Ithaca, N. Y., will be held at Ithaca, 011 Wednes
day, July 19th, 1865, at 1 o'clock, r. M., to take
measures to forward the construction of the above
works. Your attendance is earnestly requested.
Ezra Cornell. J. B. Williams, D. Boardman, C.
L. Grant, C. E. Hardy, Leonard Tremain, L. H.
Culver, F. T. Greeley, Wm. Andrus, S. H. Winton,
Committee."
The design of the above project is to build a
road between Towanda and Sodus Bay, 011 Lake
Ontario, via Ithaca and Auburn, reviving an old
project, which was on the eve of completion before
the war broke out.
7-30 LOAN — 3D SERIES. —The First Nation
al Bank is now selling the Third Series of this very
popular Loan. It is due July 15tli, 1868, and is
issued in notes of the usual denominations—
sso SIOO
SSOO SIOOO.
Bearing interest at the rate of 2 cents per day on
every $100! The Government reserving the right
of paying the amount in Gold at the rate of six per
cent, per annum.
The notes will be dated July 15, and the interest
will be paid to the purchaser in advance up to that
time at the rate of SEVEN AND THREE-TENTHS PER
CENT.
This is the last Loan the Government will make
bearing so high a rate of interest, and as it will
undoubtedly all be taken in a very short time, it
becomes every one who has the money to secure
the investment as soon as possible. Its freedom
from all state, county and town taxes ; its perfect
safety ; and being exchangeable for the famous 5-
20 Bonds, make it, like the former Series, the
most desirable Loan offered by the Government.
p£f~ This Bank, will, as nsuid, render to invest
ors every facility for taking the Loan. Any infor
mation in regard to it will be cheerfully given.

To THE EDITOR OK THE REPORTER. —An article
appeared in the last number of your paper, pur
porting to be the Minutes of the Herrick Educa
tional Club, iu which my name is used in a man
ner that calls for a reply. As lam not a member
of that Club, and was not present at the meeting
referred to, I was, of course, surprised to find my
name figuring so conspicuously in their •' Min
utes." It is plain, from the style of the article it
self, that it was the mere exhibition of petty indi
vidual spite ; as 110 respectable literary association
would consent to disgrace itself by publishing
false statements in such wretchedly false syntax.
To have one's name dragged before the public
without any just cause or provocation is annoying
enough : but to be assailed under the name of an
" Educational" Society with such excruciatingly
bad grammar is what no ordinary mortal could be
expected to endure in silence.
It may be true that " The quarterly Jteport of the
I[errick\E)lHcati<mal Club xrere held," as stated in that
publication ; and it may be a pleasant fact to know
that " the exercise- were then entertained with a song
and chorus." But it is not true that the person
who "moved "to suppress the " Cultivator " was
an Honorary member of the Club. I am author
ized by the Presideut now in office to state that he
is not a member— honorary or otherwise. He who
knowingly makes one fulse statement, is not enti
tled to belief in any other statements he may make.
Therefore, it is hardly necessary to add that I am
informed by members and others who were pres
ent that no resolution in the words and form as
published was adopted by the Club at that meet
ing.
As soon as I saw the Reporter containing the ar
ticle referred to, I called npon several members of
the Club, and was assured that no such "minutes'*
as those published had been adopted by the Club;
and that they suspected that the "TUe, th
was a blustering little individual who had tried to
" kick up a fuss at the meeting in question.
The only way in which iny name could possibly
be connected with that meeting, and be entitled to
a place in the "minutes," is through a circum
stance which shows a very different estimate of me
by the Society from what the article would indi
cate. Some little time before the meeting. I re
ceived a letter from John M. Crawford, then Pres
ident, inviting me, and strongly urging me to de
liver an address before the Society at that mee t
ing. This invitation I declined, as I was not able
to be present at that time. The terms used in the
letter towarels me are epiite different from those in
I the article published.
Feeling quite certain that the young lady, whose
j name is signed to the article in the Ite/mrter would
j not willingly have appeareel in a public new spaper
j as the author of such unlaely-likc expressions as
i those referring to me, I immediately spoke to her
father on the subject. He expressed much regret
at the affair, and assured me that his daughter was
not the writer of that part of the article which re
ferred to me ; that she had only furnished notes of
the real proceedings, and that the publication of
the portion to which I objected was made, under
her name, without her authorization, knowledge
or consent. This is a sufficient answer to the ar
ticle.
It has always been considered unmanly, and by
I Jeff' Davis Las been made ridiculously disgrace-
I fully, for any person to hide away from responsi
| bility under a woman's disguise. One who would
I attach a young lady's name without her consent,
to such an unlady-like production, unwilling to
father it himself, is not of course entitled to any
other notice than a mere exposure of that fact.
As the article referring to me was published in
the Heporter, I trust you will be kind enough to
give this an insertion also. Yours Hespt'y.
