HI MPHKEV departed this life at Towanda, April 20, 1805. Born in Massaehn settes, his father removed to Orwell, where lie was known as a practising physician, and the son passed the lirst active years of early manhood. In 1855 the subject of our sketch came to Towunda, es tablished himself in business which lie prosecuted with assiduity and success. Returning to Orwell for a temporary sojurn in the fall of 1801, he was prostrated by a sickness of four months, during the past winter. On recovering, lie resumed his place in the old circle of his friends in town, by whom he was most warmly welcomed, and the hope cherished, that his familiar face would long remain to greet them on the street and in the Sanctuary. But lie who doeth all things well, had ordained a better portion for this His servant. The bright and cheerful spirit with which lit resumed his du ties as a citizen among ns, was like the flame, which shoots up cheerfully around the embers, a i mere premonition that the tile is ready to go out. A constitution naturally feeble proved to be under ; mined beyond recovery. The springs of life | were t vliausted and nature failed to rally under ! the application of medicine. Slow almost insen ! sibly free from pain -tile good man sank to his test. " lie is not for God took him." On the following Sabbath - amid the balmy air j of ti spring morning—the bright sun overhead and ! the opening leaves of the woods around, all sosug ! gestive of the " Resurrection of-the .Just," a long j procession pursued its way to Orwell-Hill, where ' after religious service in the Presbyterian Church, | we laid him down, on one of those pretty green | slopes, beside the remains of his father. His i mother, truly "a mother in Israel," venerable in age, was present, aid still waits her appointed i time. The whole surrounding country contributed I to swell the number that followed to the burial. | The sad countenances of the citizens of Orwell, be ; frayed their sineere mourning for the dead and in I their kindness to the living, by providing for the eomlort 01 those who came from abroad, they | showed a warm heart and a delicacy of feeling I which are worthy of the highest praise. Thus has passed away one whose sterling mod j estv would forbid a labored epitaph. But in all I the relations of life as the honored head of a fam ily. as marked by diligence and strict integrity in business, as the popular Superintendent of the Sabbath School, us the judicious and exemplary Ruling Elder in the house of God—hut above all as the humble and lowly minded believer who peacefully trusts, alone in the merits of the Re deemer, we tind it in our hearts to pay this tribute to his memory. " Precious in the sight of the Lord, is the death of His lambs." "Life's duty done as sinks the clay, Light from it's load, the spirit flies, While heaven and earth combine to say, How blest tlic righteous when he dies." Wysox, Pa. J. A. R. itlisicllancous.
