    LOCAL AND GENERAL
The severity of the winter culmina
ted on Tuesday morning, week, by the thereinom
etor going down to 20 deg. below zero. Such ex
cessive cold broke the back bone of the Winter
, uu l we have enjoyed, during the past week, milder
weather, with an occasional gleam of sun-shine.
The sleighing, however, continues excellent, and
probably will remain so for some time.
SEW CUCNTF.RFF.IT TREASURY NOTE —The
Pittsburg Journal says that a new counterfeit five
dollar greenback is in circulation there. It is very
poorly executed, the engravings being quite coarse
lU d rough in appearance. The Goddess of Lib
,-rtv on the left hand end of the note, and the
around work around the figure 5 on the upper
right hand corner are very poorly engraved, and
present a dim and mixed appearance. The green
on the back is of a different shade, and unlike the
genuine. The engraving is shorter than that of the
genuine by about a quarter of an inch.
APOLOGETIC. —Iu copying and arranging

~t some hundreds of subscribers, we find that mis
takes and omissions will occur. We shall be hap
py to rectify all errors, when informed of the same.
GEO. W. COON k Co., call the atten
tinn of the public to their large stock of Fashion
able goods now on exhibition at their Ready Made
Clothing Emporium. They have made Cutting and
Manufacturing a speciality, and will warrant gar
ments made in a style and manner not to be sur
passed out of the cities. Those desiring good fit
ting clothes will do well to give them a call.
DR. PALEMON JOHN, editor of the
Bloomsburg Republican, visited this place last week,
on business connected with the draft. The people
of Columbia county, in common with the citizens
of the other counties of the District, believe that
the quota assigned us, is excessive, being larger
under a call for three hundred thousand men, than
under the former call for five hundred thousand.
This quota is based upon an enrollment of 11,000
names. The revised lists will contain but half that
number.
The citizens of Columbia have appointed Mr.
JOHN aud JOHN G. FREEZE, a committee to act in
conjunction with persons from the other counties
of the district, to procure the necessary documents,
and proceed to Washington and have the quota re
duced to a fair number. We have no doubt, that
upon a proper representation to the Provost Mar
dul General, justice will be done to the district.
DESTRUCTIVE FIRE IN ELMIRA. —Elmira was
visited by quite a disastrous fire on Monday even
ing, 13th nit. The tire originated in DOTY'S Da
gnerreau Gallery iu Union Block over the store of
LEWIS STRAUSS & Co. The loss of Mr. DOTY was
marly total. STRAUSS A Co., lost much through
injury by water and removal. The fire was checked
before reaching the ground floors. The work of
the Steam Fire Engine is spoken evf with much
praise. Soldiers aided in working Engines. The
weather was extremely cold aud interfered with the
working of the hand engines. The loss is not
known—thought to be covered by insurance.
tea"-It is now officially announced that
Mr. CHARLES MINOT has resigned the office of Gen
eral Superintendent of the Erie Railway, and been
appointed Consulting Engineer ; and that Mr. HUGH
RIDDLE has been appointed General Superinten
dent—the resignation and appointment to take ef- ;
feet on the Ist day of March, proximo.
THE TOWAXPA GOAL REGION.—A third Coal
Company called the -'Towanda Coal Company" has
recently been organized to operate in the Barclay
t 'oal region, consisting of the following officers and
proprietory
JERVIS LANGDON, of Elmira, President.
Col. A. S. DIVEN, " Director.
Dr. E. ELDRIDGE . " "
HENRY W. RATHBONE, " "
JAMES MACFABLANE, of Towanda, Director and
< leneral Manager.
Maj. ALEX. DIVEN, of Elmira, Treasurer and
Secretary.
They have purchased of the Sehrader Land Co.,
eleven hundred acres of valuable coal land, adjoin
ing and lying north of the Barclay lands, and have
begun work vigorously, opening mines, building
team roads, clearing land and building bouses. We
learn that they have purchased one of BLANDY A
< 'o's celebrated portable Steam Saw Mills made at
Zanesville, Ohio, which will soon be in operation,
and contracted with MEILEY, WAIMEE A Co., of
Lebanon, Pa., for coal cars. As they have but
half a mile of train road to build, they will no I
doubt get their works in successful operation early !
in the season. Mr. MACTARLANE, who has for eight ;
years been the General Superintendent of the Bar- j
clay Coal Company, will retire from their service in '
TIN' spring and give his entire attention to his OAVH
interests.
The "Fall Creek Coal and Iron Company" which [
was organized last summer, are making prepara- '
t;ons for a large business ; and the Barclay Coal J
Company have completed thirty new houses, muk- !
ing one hundred in all, and have made other ar
rangements for doing an increased business.
We hear that no work has been done at any of
the coal mines in Tioga county since the first of j
January, owing to misunderstandings between the j
minors and their employers, while in the Barclay
region all hands are at work.
