AVILLEY, resigned. ESCAPED FROM ELMIRA JAIL. —On the night ~f tin- 27th ult., seven prisoners escaped from the ,il ; it Elmira, X. Y., by tunneling from their cell under the wall of the prison. Their names and the charges against them, were as follows : LORENZO C. STEWART, confined on a sentence of minder, the execution of which had been indefini tely postponed. Last fall he made a successful es , ijir from jail with several others, hut was retaken. i 'HAKI.ES F. YAKIAN under indictment and wait ire, trial for forgery. Ji Lii's FOSTER, who died at his :• .■•'.deuce in this place, on the 10th inst., in the .y.'th \ ear of his age, was among the early settlers it this Borough- having located here, when a young man, as the Pastor of the Presbyterian church : anil officiated as such for twenty-seven years. In his eelesiastical studies he was so assid uous as to seriously impair his health ; and, to en able him to restore it, he resigned his charge ; but his sedentary life had so weakened his constitution that no human aid could repair it, and he gradually sunk into the sleep of death, in the full confidence of a blissful resurrection and a glorious immortal ity. As a preacher, Mr. FOSTER'S elocution was not • liarnct, ri/-d by that meteoric brilliancy, dazzling Hungary, or metaphoric sublimity, which is better .deulat. il to please the fancy than instruct the ■pigment : but his sermons abounded in potent : asoning enforced by biblical truths and scriptural illustrations, as a solid basis of conviction and an abiding faith. He is said to have written, during l.i- ministry, several thousand original sermons.— i His private life was a faithful exemplification of j trm christian charity. He spoke evil of none, • thought evil of few, and dealt justly with all. In , 1l- social relations, he was amiable and intelligent. !
