a thorough acquaintance with the books studied.
COar se this was not the time to discuss the different
" ri s that are maintained upon some branches of the
*ubjeet. Youthful students are to be examined upon the
they have studied, and tried by that ted they mer
'Re approval of all.
In the Languages the fidelity as well as the compe
tence of the teachers was shown in aiming to lead the
pupils to a thorough knowledge of the principles of the
science, as well as ot their application in construction
and translation.
The Mathematics came in for their full share of atten
tion, according to their importance in a course of liberal
education—and, here again, the Committee were gratified
with the high attainments achieved over such parts as
they had studied. We were carried back to our school
boy days, and before we were aware found our minds
glowing with the emotion and interest we used to feel
under similar circumstances.
The exercises in composition and declamation well cor
respond with their attainments in the other branches of
study. We hazard nothing in the prediction that there
were powers exhibited on that occasion which will make
themselves felt—we trust for good—upon the community
in the various departmeLts of domestic and public life.
The examination was no sham, get upon select por
tions ef the subjects studied to make an empty show, and
a false impression in regard to the attainments of the
scholars, but a faithful exemplification of those attain
ments.
We congratulate the community upon having among
them so excelleut a literary Institution, and would ear
nestly suggest that the appropriate acknowledgement to
these competent, laborious and successful teachers, un
der whose instruction such scholorship as we were so
happy to witness, had been attained, is to extend to them
their liberal patronage and heaity co-operation.

GRAND FANCY DUKSS BALL. —On Friday
evening last, a Fancy Dress Ball came off at the Ward
House. It was a complete success ; far exceeding the
expectations of the most sanguine. The characters were
generally se'ected with good taste, and well sustained.
But to the Ladies we must accord the credit of greatly
surpassing the Gentlemen in the richness and elegance
of their costumes, and the very able manner iu which
they sustained their several parts.
Want of space forbids any attempt to particularize—
we must content ourselves with a brief mention of the
characters represented : The Union was beautifully rep
resented by Miss L—e W—d, with her stars and stripes,
the red, white and blue. She sustained her part well,
and was among the belles of the evening. Miss H—n
M—e and Miss S—h A—y. the forme'- representing Morn
ing and the latter Night, were elegantly attired and at.
traded much attention. Miss E—e B—w appeared in
the character of the Goddess of Liberty ; she was beau
tifully dressed and lustained her character admirably.
Miss F —k C—r personated the character of Pocahontas ;
her custome was elegant and exceedingly appropriate,
and she sustained her part well, and attracted much at
tention during the evening. Miss L—e K—y as Lady
of the Laic was a decided success. Mrs. J. W. M—s as
the Spanish donna; Misses B—t S—g ll—n P—l. and
D —a T—<3, as Flower Gills ; A —e K—y and S—h C—h
as Highland dames ; H—a M—e as " Fiora McFlimsey;''
D —l F—x as a " Young Lady o! Color;" D—a C—r as
the Irish Lady ; M—a P —s as a Bloomer ; M—a A—t as
" Old Aunt CUloe" ; A—e F—x as Mrs. Partington ;
A—a L—n as Widow Bedott; S— H—l as Shepherdess;
M— yC—h as an Ancient Lad \ ; H—e W—n represent
ing the Union ; A—a W—n the Young Bride ; I—a 'l—h
as Summer—all were dressed with ta-te and propriety,
and Dore themselves in their several parts with much
grace and effectiveness, and deserve a lengthier notice
than we have room to give.
Many of the Gentlemen perforate I their parts well ;
though their costumes did not show the taste and elabo
ration of the Ladies. Mr. J. G. I'- nas Sir John Falstaff
was dressed in character, and sustained his part equal to
the merry knight himself, to the very gieat amusement
of the audience. C—k P—r in the character of a dandy
negro, took off the " intelligent contraband " to perfec
tion, and has rarely been surpassed by the Christy's;
J—e W—n in his Irish character was splendid, and would
have done credit to Barney Williams himself ;CC —yeR—e
cs one of the Imps of Darkness; J. W. M -sas 'Smikes';
G—e E—l as a Sailoi Boy; A—t B—r as a Plantation
Darkey ; A—r B—t as a New England Yankee ; M—n
S—g i, s a French Zomve ; 01. H. 15. McK—n as Knight
of the Red Cross; P y Q—s as a Modern Puritan;
F—k C—n as a Brigand ; C—y P—h as ' the Last Ro?e
of Summer;" A—u P--s, the Continental; W—l T—d,
as an English Officer ; J—n I)—r elaborately got up in
Turkish style, were among the most noticeable costumes
present, aud done credit to the wearers.
The dancing was entered into with much spirit, and
apparantly enjoyed with great zest. Goddesses, Devils,
Aboriginies, Contrabands, and all the motley crowd ap
parantly gave themselves up to the reign of Terpischoie
with unusual abandon. Keeler, the prince of musicians,
was present with h is full band, and was never more hap
py in his selection of music. The dancing was kept up
until " the wee sma'hours ayent the twal," when the
company separated in the highest possible state ot satis
faction and enjoyment.
Fancy Dress Bails have been of late all the rage in our
cities, and are now becoming popular all over the coun
try, and i! properly conducted are a source of amusement
and pleasure. It is gratilying to know, that this, the
first public oue ever held in Towauda, passed oil so sa
tisfactorily and pleasantly to all.

DIED.
In Pike, Bradford county, Pa., on the 20th of March,
EDWARD CRANDALL. M. D., aged 57 years aud 14
days.
Perhaps no man, in the ordinary walks of life, was
more widely known in this and the neighboring conn, ics,
than Dr. Crandal. And he needed only to be known to
be loved. He was born in Trumansburg, Tompkins Co.,
N. Y-, aud early exhibited an extroardinary degree of
determination in the pursuit of his studies. I liirty-eight
years ago, at the very early age of 19, be commenced the
practice of medicine in Luzerne county, in this state. Six
years afterwards he removed to this county, where he has
resiced ever since. Having been compelled, by contiuu
ed ill health, to give up the practice, he this winter, se
cured a clerkship in Washington, out remained there
only a month. His anxiety lor his family and bis coun
try, his broken-down constitution, and his unceasing at
tendance at the bedside of his nephew, M. W. Jones, in
his la-t illness, all combined to render hint an easy prey
to that same fearful disease, typhoid fever. As soon as
be felt himself growing ill, be started lor home, feeling
that it was his last sickness. He survived but nine days
after reaching home.
His whole lite was spent in studying how he couid
most benefit his fellow man. Remarkably successful in
liis profession, he always remembe red the intimate rela
tion of the health of the mind to that of -the body, and
considered that his task was but bait done when he had
alleviated physical pain. He was the skillful physician,
the kind and gentle nurse, the thoughtful friend and
ounseilor. The Cuurch on earth has lost a consistent
and active member ; society is deprived ot one of its
greatest ornaments ; the sick and sutfering have met with
au unspeakable loss: and he will loug be remembered
and mourned by all who knew him well.
In Washington, D. C., on the 3d of March uIt.,NORVAL
WADSWORTH JONES, eldest son of E. W. Jones,
Esq., of Pike, aged 31 years, 7 months and 18 days.
The death of this young man deserves more than a
passing notice. Having, by the exercise of a great de
gree of energy and perseverance, acquired a superior ed
ucation amoug difficulties tbat would have effectually
hindered a less determined will he was engaged for a
number of years as teacher of Mathematics in Harbart
Hall Academy, Holland Patent, Oneda county, N. Y.
Alter leaving these, he occupied his tim?, for a while, in
acting as Agent for a publishing house in New York, in
lu e introduction of school books In the counties of Tioga
! and Broome. Afterwards he became a studant at law in
the office of Hon. D. S. DICKINSON, at'Binghamton. Sub
sequently he l>ecarae a teacher in Latin and Mathematics
at St. Timothy's Hall, Baltimore county Md., and while
there he was admitted to the Bar in Baltimore city. He
continued .there until the school was broken up, by the ex
citement attendant upon the present rebellion. At the
tiin-e of bis deatn, he was temporarily engaged with
his brother in busiuess in Washington. Having business
that called him to the Camp, be was detained there more
than a week, and while there he contracted that terrible ;
disease, the typhoid fever, which so soon termimatcd his j
life. Two weeks of excrutiating suffering, brought him i
to " the last of Earth." He breathed his last in the arms j
of tender and devoted friends, whose faithful, earnest and
unceasing attendance at his bedside, deserves and re
ceives the heartfelt gratitude of his relations and friends.
There are indeed many, in whatever community he has
resided, who will mourn his untimely end.
Possessing a superior education, a member of the Bar
in Baltimore, with au extensive knowledge of men, ob
tained where true education can only be acquired—by
intercourse with men and books—perhaps no young man
possessed the promise of a brighter future, or gave his
friends more pleasing hopes. Generous aßd noble, with
out ostentation, the loving son, the affectionate brother,
the faithful friend, and the sincere christian, his memory
is embalmed in the hearts of all—parents, brothers, sis
ters, a large circle of relations and friends, north and
south, who will remember but to bless.
