m. - TEMPERANCE .—Mr. Editor Wehnd '
the pleasure of listening, last week, to a very able and el
oquent address, upon the subject of Temperance, by Maj.
E. \\ . HAJ.E, of Woodside The Court House was crowd
ed with an eminently intelligent audience, who testified
by repeated applause, their full apprecation of its merit.
1 he subject was handled in so able and entertaining a
manner, that we believe no one who listenencd to it could
but have been strengthened in the stern purpose of mov
ing forwaird in the glorious reformation and continue to
be classed araoDg the " Defenders ot the faith.''
The Major's Lecture, we are free to say, was in all re
spects a complete success, and, as we are informed, this
is among his maiden efforts, the friends of the cause have
ample reason to congratulate themselves upon the acces
sion to theii ranks of so able and eloquent an advocate.
He should be encouraged to take the field, as the " Har
