gefartmntti ihe Farmer a Co-Worker with the Al mighty. ID dealiDg with the laod intra is called to be aco worker with the infinite mind. This e the foundation of the nobleness cf the far mer's office. The air is given to us. We cannot alter its coustitutiou or change its currents. The sea is not placed under our domfnion. We can not freshen it or iucreaseits saltness ; wecau not level or raise its billows. The rain is or dained for each latitude, and we canuot hasten or vary the bounty of the clouds. Minerals ore provided in a definite, unalterable measure by the creative force. But the soil we can make our own. We can increase and renew its richness. Got> does net make it to be a fixed, or self-perpetuating blessing, like the at mosphere and the ocean. It is a trust. So much he will do for it ; but a verv great deul is left for us to be faithful in. fn ihe manage ment of the soil, the Creator takes us into par tnership ; and on 0..r fidelity withiu the bounds of our trust, and tbe progress of socie ty depeods. * * .* In fact we shall not reaeb the right point for appreciating the eminence of agriculture as a duty, a profession and a trust, uniil we see that the earth is not yet finished. The Crea tor has left part of the fashioning co man, or rather waits to work through man is perfect ing it. The air cones up to the Divine idea. The sea also answers to the majesty of GOD'S first conception of it. The clouds correspond, in their charms of form and glory of color, to the archetypes of them in the divine imagina tion. The highest mountain tops, of splinter ed crag or dazzling snow, cannot be improved any more than they can be altered, by the power and wit of man But the earth does not yet fulfill the d'vine intention. It was not made for nett'es, nor for the manziuito and chaparral. It was made for grain, for orchards, for the vine, for the comfort and luxuries of thrifty homes. It was made for these through the educated, organ ized, and moral labor of man. As plows run deeper, as irrigation is better understood and observed, as the capacities of different soils are comprehended, as types of vegetation are im proved, as economy in the renewal of the vital ity of the land is learned and practiced, the process of creation goes on * chaos subsides ; the divine power and beauty appear in uature. In the first chapter of Genesis we read that GOD said on the third day, " let the waters under tbe heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear ; and it was so." Commentators tell us now that these "days" of Genesis represented long pe riods ; and this third day's work is not yet over. It was only in the general and "in the rough," that the separation first took place. The best lands of the globe are still saturated and swampy. Man is to complete the fiulfill ment of that command. Drainage is the pro cess that perfects it. Every acre of opulent bog and bounteous tule from which the coarse grasses are bauished—of which the snakes, frogs, and turtles are dispossessed, adds a new evidence of its fulfillment, and promotes the agent in it to the honor of being an implement of Providence in completing the task of Ctea tlon. USE THE ROLLER.—A writer in the Former and Gardner presses upon agriculturists the merits of this implement in the following man lier : " Why don't our farmers use the roller more frequently? Is it because they are not wil ling to incur the expenses of the purchase ? Is it because they are not disposed to bestow the extra amount of labor involved in rolling their fields, or is it because they do not under- j stand its use and benefits ? Do tluy not know that a roller is almo.-t indispensable on light i soils, because it presses the earth closer around j smail seeds—that it is equally useful on heavy j soils, because it crushes the clods, and brings j the pulverized eurth in direct contact with the I seed, —that it is good on grass fields, because j it presses small stones, bones, SCIENTIFIC PARADOXES —The water which drowns us. as a fluent stream, can be walked upon as ice. The bullet which, w hen fired from a gun, carries death, will be hartneloss when ground to du-it, before being fired. The crys i'alized part of the oii of roses, so grateful in its fragrance—a solid at ordinary tempera tures, though readily volatile—is a compound substance, containing exactly the same ele ments, and in exactly the same proportions as the gas with which we light our streets. The tea which we daily drink with benefit and plea sure, produces palpatalion nervous trembling and evee paralysis, if taken in excess ; yet the purely organic element called thiene to which tea owes its qualities, may be taken by itself —without any appreciable effect. The water which allays our burning thirst, augments it when congealed into snow ; so that Capt.lioss declares the natives of the Arctic regions pre fer enduring the utmost extremity of thirst rather than attempt to remove it by eatiug snow. Yet if the snow be melted it becomes drinkable water. Nevertheless, althoogh if melted before entering the mouth, it assuages the thirst like other water, when melted iu the mouth it has the opposite effect. To render this paradox more striking, we have only to remember that ice which melts more slowly in the mouth, is very inefficient for allaying the thirst. The following is a receipe for removing grease from woolen goods : One ouuee of pulverized borax, and half an ounce of gum camphor put into one quarl ol boiling water, aod bottle for use, will be found invaluable for removing grease or dirt from all woolen goods. The experiment is cheap and the application is sure. B& m Look well after jour young stock this cold weather,- jftfscrllawous. Sasq|atraa Cclltgiak institute, TOWANDA, BRADFORD CO., PA. FACULTY ! He will also be present-to conduct its exercises as often as practicable, and will deliver frequent lectures on the Theory and Practice of Teaching, as also on other subjects connected with Normal training. Those persons, therefore, intending to engage in teach ing for the winter, will find it greatly to their advantage to be present during the Fall term.
