SURGICAL OPERATIONS. —We take the
following from the Elm ra Daily Gazette, of the 21st ult-:
" A correspondent gives nn account of two surgical ope
ration*. RS performed by Dr. E.l'. ALLEN, of East Smith
field, Bradford county. Pa. Both cases were of an exceed
lngly difficult and delicate character, and therefore de
manded the greatest professional skill on the part ofthe
operator, and it appears that both were most successfully
treated. The Doctor is spoken of as having had a large j
practice, and as a graceful and skillful operator. The (
cases, and as treated, are as follow*:
AMPUTATION AT THE KIT JOINT.
On 18th inst., Dr F,. P. ALLEN, of East Smithfield, I
Bradford emtn y. Pa., assisted by Drs. CORY, WILEEU,
Gf.HOULD and MOODY, amputated the leg of GEO. DRIS- !
t'AL. at the hip joint. The Doctor remarked before opc- ;
Tiling that tb patient had been afTi i ted eight year*, and 1
the exrrntiating pain and profuse discharge had made liim i
reryfetble. The amputation had been recommended to 1
him a long time ago, and it was now a dernier resort ; •
jet from the success he had in a similar case one year I
and a half ago,he had reason to hope the operation would ■
prove a suceessftt! one. After the operation the head of
the bone was found to he entirely ulcerated away, and a i
part of the Uochantetr major. The socket {acetabulum)
was ulcerated through to the size of a quarter of a dol- j
ar - All the diseased portion of the bone were removed, j
and the pa.ient is now (forty-eight hours alter the opera
tiori) doing well.
REMOVAL of THE UPPER EYE-LID FOK CANCER.
Mrs. (., aged seventy three years, had been suffering,
twelve years from a cancerous grow h on Hie upper lid ,
of the right eye. For a year past site had suffered great
pain in the eye and head, owing to pressure of tlie tumor j
00 the eye, entirely excluding the globe from sight, and
'he pressure on the nerves in that region. The Doctor j
a radical cure could hardly be expected on a patient I
her years, yet it was not impossible. The primary ob- !
jert was to remove the tumor so as to relieve the parts
from 'be great pressure fr m which they were suffering,
which, he removed the entire lid, and quite a prom
inence in the inner canthus. Tiie patient was quite com
frrtable after the operation. Both patients were tho

LAIWSBURG UNION SABBATH SCHOOL. —
MR, EDITOR : —ME had an excellent celebration on the
3d. It was the largest ever held in this place We form •
ed into procession at Brown's school house, and marched
down by M. A. ,LAED S, then turned and went back to
the grove, after which we listened to an able speech by
Elder LATIIROP, to the Sabbath School ; then with great
attention we listened to four little girls speak a dialogue
v hich cannot be beaten very easy— then three cheers for
the girls—then we turned to the left and saw a table rich
ly spread with refreshments, of which there was plenty.
After refreshments we listened to very appropriate
speeches from two gentlemen from Dushore.
We return our thanks for the services rendered by four
musicians from Dushore, then we were dismissed and A
general lot of fun ensued, such as swinging, shooting
fire crackers, Ac.
If the adjoining neighborhoods think they can beat ua,
we say let them try it and we will help them. 8.

DEATH OF CAPT. STCRROCK —In the
battle on Friday , 27th ult ., near the Chickahominy , Capt.
It. W. STCRROCK,CO. F, sth Reg. , P. R., was struck by
a ball in the forehead aud instantly killed. His men en
deavored to carry his body off the field, but the battle
raged with such fierceness that they were enabled to se
cure it. and it was left upon the field of battle.
Capt. STUUKCCK'S parents re ide in Wellsboro', and be
came hete in December, 1860 to take charge of the Re
porter. W hen the call for volunteers was made, in the
S riug of 1861 , he was one of the first who responded,
shouldering his musket as a private in Co. V. For some
j time he was Orderly Sergeant, and elected First Lieu*
| tenant, failed to obtain his Commission, through omission
! ol the proper authorities. Upen resignation of Capt.
J i KOUT, he was elected Captain, and has had command of
; the Company for some months. ,
, During the few mouths Capt. STCRROCK was here, he
| made many friends, and was universally respected and
j esteemed. Of quiet, unassuming manners, his sterling
qualities and social, manly disposition, won the respect
|°' til with whom he was associated. IZa has laid his life
I upon the altar of his country, and no holier, purer, sac

j defence of the Union and ol* Freedom.
4ss3~* MURDER—The Luzerne Union says

murder, I lie particulars of which are a- follows : Charles

he was known to have threatened het life at different
times within the last few years. .He was of somewhat in
temperate habits, and whenever he -had been drinking,be*
c one an ugly, troub'esotn.' cu-tonier. On tiie morning
of the fata', tragedy, he went out and got n quart ot liqu. r
