I®- NEXT STATE FAIR. —The Executive
Committee of the State Agricultural Society, met at Har
risbut'g on Tuesday of last week, aud resolved to hold the
next State Fair at Norristown. Montgomery county, ou
Tuesday, September 30th, October Ist, 2d and 3d,1862.
Boyd Hamilton was elected Recording Secretary of
the Society, in place of John 11. Ziegler, resigued.
During last week there were sevea!
teams ran away in our streets. In fact it has become
quite a frequent occurrence to see a pair of horses dash
ing through town on " double quick." One day last week
ahorse attached to a wagon ran almost the entire length
of the business portion oi town, on the side walk. Strange
tosav no very serious damage was done, although sever
al women and children barely escaped being run over.—
Persons leaving horses in the street cauuot be too careful
in tieiug them securely.
JGY RFIIEL PRISONERS. —The first Rebel
prisoners sent to Pennsylvania, are about 500 in number,
captured by Geu. FREMONT, in the Valley OL Virginia, and
nuw in Camp Curtin, Harrisburg. They are described,
on ali hands, as the most filthy looking and ignorant set
of Americans ever brought together in our State. They
expressed great surprise to see everything going on as
usual in Pennsylvania ; at home they left everything in
the alarm, confusion and waste of warfare. It is stated
that they will not lc " exhibited," but will he scoured
up, decently clad, and kept in comparative seclusion.—
Manv of them had scarcely clothing enough on them to
cover th< ir nakedness, while others were entirely bare
foot, and not a few minus a shirt.
We see tiiat quarters are beiug prepared in Elinira for
the reception of Rebel prisoners.

A®" SINGULAR CASE. —ON Monday morning
a report leached here from Oxford that the body of a
tutu had been found 11 rating i:i the river near the bridge
in that village, and that, from inspection of the clothes,
it was believed to be the body of the burglar who had
been operating at various places in this valley, and whose
arrest bv, and escape from the police of Oxioru, we have
chronicled ir. another place. Coroner B.iiiey at orncwent
J-wn to hold an inquest, and he was soon followed by
those of our citizens who were robbed a week ago last
Monday night. The inquest established the fact that the
body had been in the water lor some days, and the iin
pression prevails that the man was drowned on Tuesday
night when he made his escape. When he ran away
from his captors he went as far east as the stone black
smith shop and he was tracked from the road near tln-ie
a.-.-ss a yard t > the north. It is thought that lie inu.-t
have been confused by a blow from a club, dealt him by
o:,c of t'.ie watchmen, and that in the darkness lie ran
i-.io the river at a point just north of the lioue of Mr.
Miller, and was drowned.
lu the pockets of tiie man were found a set of burglars
tools, two gold atclies, live hundre and tirteen dollars
in money, and a loaded revolver. One of the watches
was identified by Mr. Ilaiumoud. of this village, as the
one stolen from hira last Monday night week, and there
WAS also among the money an English crown which Mr.
II had carried for years as a pocket piece.
This is altogether a singular case. The man came here
and stayed three days without attracting attention—com
mitted three diff -rent burglaries—went to Oxford—was
arrested and escaped to run headlong to death. The an
ruls of crime and the punishment thereof record no such
instance of trial, conviction and execution all in or>c mo
ment.
P. S. We learn that there was also found upou th* body
a note of hand, given at Factoryville, by two men named
Brooks, to " Dr. Johnson," for one hundred dollars.
—The above, says the Waverly Advocate, which we
copy from the Chenango Telegraph , of the 11 (li ins ,
seems to point to a L)r. Johnson formerly of Athens, Pu..
and who married a very respectable young lady in this
village last winter. We hope it may prove otherwise.—
People about here are unwilling to believe he has been en
gaged in such criminal practices.
