To Avoid Running out of Hay.
Every for, Tier naturally litis an aversion to
moiling out of bay iu spring before grass conies.
No one desires loliuy '.hat which lie ought to
have raised, to keep iii* cattle from starving ;
and lite only alternative, when short of fodder,
namely, placing thorn on short allowance, is
Btill worse. The farmer should know before
he er>ters winter, whether he hasenongh for all
his domestic animals.
To ascertain this, man? resort to past expe
rience, determining as nearly as they can guess
—often by a very vague kind of guessing.—
Those who have kept careful record of the
number of tons consumed by a given' head of
cattle, or a certain number of horses, may de
termine attire uarly. When the cattle and
horses have beea weighed, mid the aggregate
weight of the herd thus determined, the esti
mate may be made with consideranla accuracy.
Some animals eat more than others for the
same weight ; a greater ditfereuce is occasion
ed by the severity or mildness of the weather,
dv the degree of shelter giveu from the cold ;
but as a general rule, a horse should have
three per cent, of his own weight daily in food
(hay or graiu.) and cattle who digest better
two and a half per cent. If the farrao has
ascertained the number of tons of fodder he
has deposited iu his ban, he uiay now, if he
understands aiithmetic, determine pretty ueur
)y how his bay is likely to run before grass
.time.
If he has no record of the amount of his
hay, he may determine, vtry netly by measur
ing. First, by finding the length, breadth, and
depth of the hay, he at once knows the num
ber of cubic feet Good solid timothy, the av
erage of a bay mow 12 or 15 feet deep, will
weigh a toa to about 500 cubic feet. If the
hay is clover, it will require 600 to 650 for a
ton ; and if the hay is 5 or G feet deep, add
one-sixth more.
After determining the number of tons, and
the whole weight of all his auimals, be may at
once know if he has enough. The result will,
however, be considerably modified by causes
which he has more or less at hia con'rol. Re
gularity in feeding will have its influence ;
good feeding-racks will prevent much waste—
nod comfortable shelter w ill save many tons to
every large head. A skilful farmer informed
us, that formerly, when he had just erected a
fine new barn, with ample shelter of the best
kind, he bad learned, as he thought, according
to his usual estimate, that he would have to
buy hay to complete the wintering of his aui
mals ; but on trying his new sheds aud stables
so great was the saving actually effected, that
he had several tons the next spring to spare.

DECAY OF ROOFS.— There is nothing more
unpleasant to the eye of an order-loving farm
er thau moss on his roof. Some folks, it is
true, esteem it an oruameut, but they are those
who see woudrous beauty in moss-covered ru
ins, &-c.,(see last new novel,) but not so with
the men who loves uot only neatness, but who
ig desirous, on economical grounds, of preserv
ing his roof to the longest possible period.—
Our excelleut neighbor, of the Working Farm
er, has the following on the subject, which we
commend to the attention of those who are
about putting ou new roofs :
" There is a barn near our farm with a shin
gle roof fifty years old, and the shiagles ap
pear quite as bright, and in as good order, as
most shingle roofs at the of the first year.—
When built, it was coated with a lime wash
tinted with ochre, and fully charged with glue'
and salt. This formed ua agreeable color, and
lasted many years ; the lime present entirely
preventing the growth of moss, and also the
development of acetic acid, from auv sappy
portion of the shingles. About twenty years
siuce, it was again re coated, with the lime
wash tinted with umber. This is now pretty
generally removed, still leaving an eveo color
10 the shingles, a surprising freshness of rp
pearance.
. " We suppose that the lime alone put on as
a whitewash, would have answered all these
put poses, though not so agreeable to to the
eye, while the wash tiuted to resemble the co
lor of the shingle, cuu never be unsightly.''
HARNESS.— More damage is done to harness
during the raiuy weather of early aud late win
ter than during ali the rest of the year. Sat
urated with water, covered with mud, and of
tcu frozen stiff, so as to almost break when
beut, in necessary handling unusual care should
be taken to keep it well oiled and hung up. iu
proper shape when not in nse. Thus treated,
it will not only last many times longer, but
look infinitely better than wheu neglected iu
?be usual mauner.
As to the kiud of oil, we know of nothing
better than neat's foot, or the daubing used
by tanners. To give the b'ack color charac
teristic to new leather, a little lampblack may
be added, without detriment, though it is bet
ter not to use this until the sccoml going over.
Before putting oa the oil, however, there
urc two important conditions which must be
observed—cleanliness and dampness The ne
cessity of the first is obvious, aud the last is
not less iuiportnut, since the oil cannot pene
trate the leather and make it soft and pliable
if put on when it is dry and hard.
One of the best ways togive the leather the
requisite degree of moisture Is to wrap up the
several parts of the harness iu wet cloths a few
boors previous to oiling. But this trouble is
unnecessary where washing lias been resorted
to for cHeanhig, as the oil may then be applied
before the leather is euircly dry. The oil sho'd
be rubbed iu briskly with a brush or doth, so
as to insure its absorbtiou.
Varnish should never be used as it closes
the pores and renders the penetration of oil
more difficult. Vegetable oils are hardening
in their effects aud should never be used for
that rearon.
Finally, let the applLation of oil be es fre
fpient as needed, not once a year, as it is a rule
with some, or almost never as is the practice of
many.
Arms l*i k wrrnorr A piles.— One cup of
water, one cup of sugar, juice aud peel ol one
lemon, one or two pounds of Boston craikers
broken into small pieces ; bake with under and
upper crust. The pieces of cracker look like
uppie wheu the pie is baked. The addition of
a little stewed apple uxike the deception com
plete— to eye and taste.
Hit ct FOR PnmiKt;. — Cream a half pound
or butter, aud stir in half a pound of brown
sugar; after the butter is creamed, put the
yolk of an egg into the sugar and butter : add
a gill of wine and put o*2 the fire, stirring it
•all the while till it simmers ; when it is senr

CAUTION.
"To be, or not to be— hat is the question!
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings aud arrows of outrageous opposition,
Or by taking up arms against a sea of printing ink,
And opposing, end them."
rpnE proprietor of the Argus takes occasion in adver-
X tising his Bindery to indulge in an uncalled for fling
about a sort of a concern," which ishoping "to delude
the public.*' As I haVe opened a Bindery on my own ac
count, the Inference Is that if the public bring their
binding Urine, they are in no danger of being defrauded.
For two years I have worked for Mr. PARSONS, and he
has taken great pains t satisfy the public 1 was the " best
Binder in America," as the columns of the Argus wil
testify. Has he been all that time " deluding the pnb
lielf 1 have been engaged in a fraud, he has been th
principal. But I refer to my work during that time a
evidence that there has been no fraud practiced.
Having served a long apprenticeship at the Bindery
business, I have .resumed business here on my own a> -
ootmt.aa I know of nothing which prevents me from fol
lowing a legitimate and bawful calling for my support.—
1 shall endeavor by good work and attention to my busi
