Deducting 20 per cent tare leaves 748,960 pounds net
which at 18 cents per pound, makes the snug little sum
ol *134,812 80.
The Advocate thinks that 20 per cent tare is too large,
and that the estimated price, (18 ceuls,) is below rather
than above the average cost, notwithstanding this, how
ever, all must be astonished at the magnitude of the fig
ures. They show that the portions of Tioga, Chemung
and Bradford counties, which are drained of their sur
plus produce through this point are fast becoming first
clas-.butter producing regions and iu a few years will
show them second to none in this respect. Those sta
tistics compared with the butter produce of a dozen years
ago would also show the great value which the New-York
and Erie Railroad has been to them. $134,000, is no
small amount of money to be distributed among the but
ter producers of those sections in a single year.
Hard limes ansl the war is the general
topic of conversation, now-a-days," among all classes of
people. Coming up town the other morning, we over
heard the following conversation between two sons of the
Emerald Isle:
" Arrah, Pat,and its hard times we have."
" Be dad it is," said Pat. " an' its mesel' that can hard
ly get the price of a drink in clean exsh to pay for the
" crather."
" And what do yeas think Gineral Jackson would say
if he wxs alive ?"
" Be dad he'd say he's glad he's dead," replied Pat,
and they separated each, no doubt, much benefited by
the others conversation.

Mu. EDITOR Having had the pleasant opportunity of
attending one of Prof. J. G. TOWNER'S Convention at the
above named place,we thought it would hot be amiss to
write you of its success, oceing ihat Mr. TOWNLR is one
of the pioneer music teachers of your county.
You will not think us bigoted or given to flattery,
when we say that we think Mr. T. has but few superiors
in conducting a convention ; our reason for so thinking
is because success is the only thing by which we uiay
judge of one's merits, and truly this Convention, of which
we write, has been successful to a fraction ; nor do we
wonier that Mr.T. should succeed, for his gentlemanly
deport incut, and friendly manner, arc sufficient so insure
for him a circle of frieuds wherever his business may call
him. To be sure, he has not the advantage of a knowl
edge of instrumental music, sufficient to lead iu a Con
vention, but this lack is more than made up, if possible,
by his pianist, Miss Vickoky , whose services, we were
informed, he has employed lor the present winter. She
is truly a proficient in the use of an instrument, and her
ladylike deportment has won the esteem of those who
have made her acquaintance in this place.
Mr. Towner's forte is in vocalizing, and teaching, as
he does, Mr. Bassini's new system of cultivation of the
voice, it is impossible for a lover of music to attend one
of his Conventions, without feelicg himself amply paid
for his time and money—nor do we hesitate to recom
mend him to his friends, and the country, as the leader
of Conventions, feeling, as we do, an interest in the im
provement of those who sing in the choirs of the several
churches of our country.
Mr. TOWNER, as a singer of solos, we think cannot be
beat, at least that is the impression left with the people
of this place ; this alone we think sufficient to recom
mend him to all lovers of music.
Yours, Respectfully,
A SINGER.
