Farm Work for December
The eouq arative leu&ures of winter affords,
valuable tiiuc for learning the sienee of agri ;
culture. Mere book knowledge will never
make i good farmer, ueither will mere work
ing on a farm : knowledge and practice must
g > together to secure the best results. The
s-t uly jf agricultural works will uot only add
to the stock of pructicle ideas, but will devel
op and cultivate the man himself. We urge
that all the animals on the farm be well cared
for during the inclemcut season, but are yet !
more solicitous that the cultivator docs not
neglect /muse//. Mind-power is superior to
horse power, or steam power on the farm or
clswbcre.
Accounts—Settle with all debtorsund crud-,
itors. At least lei account-; be made up, ami
a balance ngrted upon, if debts can not be
canceled.
Buildings—Save feed and fuel by excluding
wind and storms, but provide for ample veutr
lation for animals.
Cattle—Keep under shelter, feed liberally, !
with frequcut change of diet, and allow tree !
access of water, give plenty of bedding, and
keep their skins in good condition by frequent i
use of the card and brush.
Cellars—Keep out frost and rats ; sort j
over regitables that may be decaying.
Fencing materials—Collect from woods, and
from swamps when they freeze, and prepare
rails and posts.
Fodder llat-ks or Boxes—Provide them for
all stock.
Hogs—Complete fattening and kill as early j
n.s possible. Give warm food to store hogs,
and allow plenty if litter.
Horses—Keep in warm, tight, well ventila
ted stables. Feed well. Blanket when need
ed. Keep sharp shod. Give sufficient
exercise ; use card and brush often.
Lumber and Timber—l>raw from the for
est to the mill while sleighing is good.
Manures—Keep all the factories employed
Save liquid manures with absorbents of muck
or waste litter. Much of next year's profit
will depend upon the care and skill now be- j
stowed upon laying in a good stock of good j
manure.
Poultry—Keep in warm quarters, feed lib- ;
orally, supply with fresh meat, lime, and grav
el, and warm food.
Sheep—Keep separated from other stock.
Shelter from storms, in well veutilated sheds.
Give rootscut fine with hay, and a little oats
or corn. Salt#egular, and allow plenty of
water.
Tools—Keep all under cover ; repair such
as aeed it.
Winter Grain—Keep surface drains open,
and allow no stock to graze or trample the
fields.
Wood—Cut and pile ready to draw when
snow falls. Select dyiug and unthrifty trees,
acd thin out undergrowth.
If any piuning must be done before July
(the season,) let it be done now. Not only is
there now more time for the work, but the
out surfaces will harden over before the start
ing of sap iu Spring.
Remember that fruit trees repay expense
for manure quite as well as auy other crop,
and look out now, and through the Winter,
for a good supply. The lime, hair and leather
scrapings frcm tanneries, waste wool from the
clothiers, spent tan, leached ashes, oyster shells,
muck, canal sediments, etc., are all worth
carting home, some of them may well be pur- '
chased
In 6ucwy countries, care will be needed
to guard against mice which often gnaw off
the hark of small trees near the ground.—
Tramping drowu each fresh fall of snow about
the trees is a good preventive. Shake the
newly fallen snow from evergreen and other
frees to prevent its weight from splitting down
the branches.— American Agriculturist.
PRESERVING POTATOES BY BURYING THEM.—
A correspondent cf the Scottish runner
writes to that journal as follows :—Your no
tice of the conservative principle in seeds bur
ied at a depth beyond the action of the air and
moisture brings to my recollection a case of
potatoes being buried for two years, six feet
under the surface, at the end of which time
they were taken up quite sound and ready for j
use. The case I refer to was the result of
accident, and happened thus : I bad an old
ice well of the ordinary description which I
abandoned, when I built one of double timber
on the surface, after the American fashion.—
My gardener used for several years the old
well as a potato store. It happened three year's
ago that the roof fell in and buried several
hundred weight of potatoes, which, as we had
plenty, was not eared for at that time. Last
year we required stones for a purpose, and had
those forming the sides and roof of the ice-house !
dug out, when, to our astonishment we found ;
almost the whole of the potatoes as sound as
those of the same yaer's crop. I mention
this as it may be turned te an account i:i sea- ,
son when we have, as we had last year, a sur
plus crop, that by burying them deep enough,
and in a dry place, we might secure ourselves
against a short crop, as in ail probability will
be the case this year on account of the prevail- !
ing disease. In mentioning this to a friend
learned in such matters, he tells me that pota
toes buried one foot deep prodaces shoots
near the end of spring : at the depth of two
feet they appear übout the middle of summer ;
at three feet in depth they appear very short
and never come to the surface ; and between
three and five feet they cease to vegetate. He
further informs me that he has hurried pota
toes in his gurdeu at the depth of three and a
half feet, which were not removed until after
out* two years, when they were found quite
sound, and possessed their original freshness,
firmness, goodness and taste.
To MAKE STARCH.— Dissolve as much starch
as will be required in a very small quantity of
cold water ; then pour boiling water on it till
it is of the right consistency, and let it boii
once or twice.
In miring starch, put a lump of sugar in it
to prevent it from sticking to the iron. Stir
ring the starch for a minute with a sperm can
dle improves it when it is wanted for shirt
bosoms or collars.
The fellow who took offence has not
yet returned it.
If our clothes arc not we'l cut, we are ;
very apt to he cut ourselves.

ful only when it departs frcm us.
