I Capt. Telford lias, I understand, written to you that he | died on Thursday evening, apparently without suffering, and that lis was last evening buried by his brother officers : in a retired spot, about a mile and a half from our encamp ment. j Until abont twenty-tour Honrs previous to his death we | all supposed he was doing well, and that in a few days ! we would again see bim at bis post; bat it seems that lis formed a more correct opinion of his own situation than we did, for, from the beginning of his sickness he said ho I should never drill his Company again, and he never | changed that opinion. His only regret was that he was not permitted to di e on the field of battle instead of be ing carried off by disease. When we were about to leave tlie vessel to land upon this island, and it was supposed that every inch of ground would have to be gained at the point of the bayonet, although he was on a sick tied and ! dangerously ill, he almost insisted upon coming with us, and it was with difficulty he was dissuaded from doing | so. He will not only be missed here by those who were in timately acquainted with him and valued his friendship, j but he will also le missed as an officer who never failed to do his duty under all circumstances. Whenever a ques- ! lion was raised as to the duty of a man or an officer, Lieu tenant McMahon was always referred to, and I never knew a decision ol his to be disputed. The Company to which he belonged can never fill his place for there are few men who have the same qualifications requisite to make a good officer, that he had. Had it beetle permitted him to go into battle, as lie was anxious to do, 1 have no doubt that he would have distinguished himself by his cool ness and courage, but He whose ways are past finding ! out had determined differently for him,and we must con ; sider it for the best, as He aoeth all things well.
