I®*HON. GEORGE LANDON AND COL V. E. i.LET.—The citizens of Leßaysville, and adjoining ' try, extended to their State Senator, theHon.fiEof G'Ws, an invitation to address them on the tonnage Minn, and also give his reasons, if reasons be had, lor "Lug tor said bill. Tliur-diy evening, Octolier 17th, was the time fixed : i On came the evening, and with it a crowded house -ten to the man who had their implicit confidence up ! the tune of casting said vote, and even yet. they 1< It t-'ttlis.r giftej Senator would lie able in give tlc.m light ■n the questions, aud show that said vote was a ugh tewis ict. Wn t ' attaikedall corporations as danger- Jni!, ' 'he masses, and then got into a fc| '' glorification that he had once been their bonor athw. a d what he done, Ae., and finally eon clmled that the Pennsylvania Railroad should iie taxed, because it is doing well and making money, and all oth ers should be tree from tonnage tax, because they don't make as much money. That was the natural inference of the Colonel's remarks. But the great difficulty with this champion was, that he entirely flailed to make any point clear that lie took up, save two : 1. That he had been once to the Legisla ture ; 2. That the people of Bradford county probably nev er want him again iu that position. The hour being up, the Hon. GEO. LANDON again took the floor, aud, in his masterly style, lie nailed all the sophism of his antagonist to tbe wall, with tacts and il lustrations that were felt by the champion aud bis few sympathizers, but nicely enjoyed by the people. The honorable Senator then proceeded and finished, giving the people his reasons why he had voted lor the repeal of the tonnage tax : 1. It was a previous contract lie'ween the State and the Pennsylvania Railroad Company, that in case the Com pany bought the State Canal running alongside of their Road, tbe tax should be removed. 2. The Pennsylvania Railroad Company having pur. chased said liue from the State, there could be now no more justice iu putting a tonnage tax upon its freight,un less all other roads were equally taxed. 3. This tax fell upon the people living along the said Road, and not upon the Company. 4. The people prayed for its removal who were thus burdened. 6. Y'ou, yourselves, would not have submitted to said tax. The above is a synopsis of our honorable Senator's rea sons, as presented, and argued in his clear aud convinc ing and masterly style, to the entire satisfaction of mr.sl of those present, from the fact that when he was through and sit down, the ColotieJ, feeling that lie was whipped, notwithstanding his previous wish to have an opportuni ty to meet the honorable Senator in debate, arose to re ply, when the congregation met him with Aissesand nois es of various binds, and a general move for the door was made, but the Chairman persuaded them to remain and listen to the gentleman. Order was partially restored, and the champion tried to rally tinder the pressure against him. but the congregation could not be held by his sophism longer, and hence a general stampede amid his lading oratory, and to his great confusion and defeat in his ol ject in coming to Leßaysville, for the people said t>y their acts, •• We are convinced that our honored Seu at r d"iie right."
