GREAT MORTALITY.— Last Monday night
remarkable for an awful mortality among the canine
population of this place. We are informed that upwards j
of dozen d'\gs were found dead upon the streets, iu dif- j
' rent parts of town. Of course no one knows the cause !
Yljev may have been "truck by lightning ; while some \
hia* vaguely f their having stolen some prepared meat 1
,h .1 was left in the park. Whatever may have been the !
r „-,e it is not much to be regretted ; and for the credit j
of the place, we would suggest in the language of the I
-that a few tn >re such " dog-days" " can't coine j
too quick " _ y
FATAL ACCIUKXT.— A fatal accident occur- j
red on Monday arternoon in this place resulting in the
.fiith of Mr. ALKX. UKOW.V. It seems that he was riding |
np street on horse back, and when neur the Episcopal;

who struck upon his head on the frozen ground. He was ■
immediately conveyed to the residence of Mrs. W ARNEK.
and Dr. Tens**. who had witnessed the accideut was
immediately in attendance, and though every exertion j
wa , u<e j, the unfortunate man never regained his con- :

Monday night- Mr. BROWN was a young man uud but

VALENTINE'S DAY. —This memorable Saint's,

bashlul lovers—but of late the youag people are beeora

assistance of the Saint, and his accompaniments of gilt
edged and Cupid crowued missives, and it is now chiefly
observed for the opp irtunity it gives to gratify dislike or
envv, hy the sending of anonymous corainunications, or
of perpetrating jokes upon bachelors ami maidens of uu

However reprehensible tiii* practice may be we still
think it less blame worthy than the old method uf ob

The CON .T.—The tilth annua! concert of

I g ,:i by evening. It is unnecessary to speak in praise
I s band, a* the reputation which it has acquired by
I ;-oims performances is we!! known. The concert,
I ■ ,L-h not so well attended as it deserved to be,was a sue
e*, ami the applause with which the pieces were re

f;,e patriotic f et liugs of the listeners were aroused by
t> pitying of the " Star Spangled Banner," and an en

pieces were mostly of the arrangement uf the eader.
WM. P.TTKMI, which aioneisa sußicic.it guarantee of
their excellence. Aside fr on the hand Hi" pieces per
formed upon the Pian i and Vi din by Messrs. lti/ic and

satisfy himself in regard to the trutli of the first story of
the prisoner, took the trouble to go down to WeilsburgH
and make some inquiries iu regard to him, but he could
learn nothing there concerniug the fellow ; but on his
way back he was informed that a span of horses, answer

stolen ou Wednesday night, from a person named AMOS
FASMNO, residing in Springfield Centre. Ou coming
back to town, officer KXAPP called at the jail, and inform
