\ DOLBLE HOMICIDE. —A double murder
wa s committed in New York on the Ist inst.,
near Third Avenne. Mr. John Walton, a
wealthy distiller living on 25th street was shot
j n eold blood bv some nnknowu hand. He has
yince died. The flying murderer was followed
by several persons, when he turned and fired
on bis pursuers. Mr. John W. Matthews, a
railroad contractor, was shot dead by one of
the discharges, and the assassiu is yet un
known, though suspicion points strongly to
Charles and Kdwin Jeffords, the sons of Mrs.
Waltou by a former husband. Mr. W.'marri
ed his wife, then the widow liussel, some time
o rro, but was not long in discovering her true
character—loose, unprincipled, violent temper
ed aud a bigamist. He sued for a divorce
He was wealthy, and neither she nor her sons
were willing to lose their claim on his wealth,
and have resorted to all kinds of intimidation
—repeatedly threatening his life. This nefar
ious deed is attributed to their malice.
VISIT OK THE PRINCE OF WAI.ES. —The steam
er Persia brings intelligence that the Prince
of Wales would leave England on the 11th
inst., for Canada, in the St. George screw
ship, twenty guns, attended by the Earl of ST.
CKKMAINS, the Lord Steward of the Queeu's
household and a large retinue. It is uow un
derstood that he will extend his travels far
West, and employ perhaps two months in mak
ing the proposed tour. In this case, he can
not well avoid American territory, but as yet
the United States Government has received 110
official intimation of an intended visit.
THE CHEAT EASTERN'. —The monster steam
ship Great Eastern is proving u failure as a
"show." The charge of one dollar per head
for admission is justly regarded as an extor
tion, and the number of visitors is limited to
from 500 10 1,200 daily. The charge for ad
mission in England was half-a-erown, or about
GO cents. It is probable that the ship will be
exhibited along the coast for some months, or
until huge proportions cease to be a novelty.
