On examining the injured leg. it was found necessary
to amputate it, as above stated, trtiow the knee. Dr. A.
RICK, of Southport, was also present, and assisted in the
operation, which was performed with much skill by l>r
puanv. the patient, daring the operation, being under
the inHoence of Chloroform. Mr. OWENS is about sixty
seven years of age.

FIRE AT TROT. —On Monday evening a barn
belonging to ALONZO LONG, in Troy borough, was burned
to thegronnd, with six tnliiable horses, and other prop
rrty. The fire occurred about 8 o'clock, and is supposed
to have been the work of an incendiary.

DEATH OF WASHINGTON IRVING.—WASH
INGTON* lUVING, the p;eoinl, warm-hearted, be
nevolent man, —the illustrious author, lias
ceased-to-exist. lie died at his well-know n

Monday evening, 29tii ult. Tlis funeral took
place Thursday, at Tarry town. Business was
.-u-pe<led. Stores were closed. From almost
every house mourning drapery was hung. The |
bells of the churches tolled lor some hours. •
From the surrounding country, and from Now
York and other cities, thousands of people as
seiubled, in aud about the church, witere th<-
funeral services took place. A procession more
than a mile iu length, followed the remuiues

of the deceased to tire grave, where, besides
many of the most distinguished men of New ,
York city, were nearly all the Episcopal clergy,
including the Provisional Bishop ol the Diocese, j
The New York Common Council and the
Trustees of' the Astor Library were present ; :
and the Historical Society was well represen
ted. The services in the church a n d at the
grave were conducted by the Rev. Dr. Creigh
too, Pastor of the church at Tarry town, of
which Mr. Irving was a member.
