A CHILD WITH TWO HEADS— Successful Am
mutation of one—A correspondent of the
>'orth Andover (Mc.) Advocate says :
"On the 18th of September last, a child
was born in the town of Palmyra, liaviog two
heads. The names of the parents are Johu
and Mary Ward. The first, a natural head,
seemed as nearly perfect as that of an infant
usually is—the second, an unnatural head, was
connected by a neck of about the usnal length
nud size, to the back or posterior part of the
first one, a little above the point where the
head and neck naturally join. Both heads
were of about the same size, and facing oppo
site ways. Hair grew perfectly natural ou
both scalps, but the second head was entirely
wanting in features—there were a few small
irregularities were the face or features should
have been, appearing as if nature had attemp
ted to form features, but without success. The
health of the child seemed good, aud it grew
well until the 19tbof the present mouth, (Oc
tober), when the unnatural head was success
fully amputated at the neck by Dr. J. C. Man
son, of Pittsfield ; a dissectiou of this showed
the skull to be composed of bone aud cartilege ;
also, what should have been hone in the neck,
proved to be cartilege. The head contained a
substance almost perfectly resembling brain,
but of less density. It has now been some
five days since the operatiou, and the child is
fast recovering.
A notrious burglar, named Rockwell,
drowned himself ou Saturday evening while in
charge of Detectives Lowell and James, of
Syracuse, under the following circumstances, as
stated by the Rochester Union :
"These officers were bringing him from
Hudson, where they had arrested him, to
Albany, in the New York express train of
Saturday evening. As they were crossing the
river at Albany, one of the officers named
stood by Rockwell's side, the prisoner being
handcuffed. Our informant, who was con
versing with the officer, remarked Rockwell's
advancing a step or two, aud in a moment
more he darted forward to the bow of the
boat and plunged into the river. The bout
was stopped and search was made for the vil
ain, dead or alive, but it was made in vain."
