farmer's gepattnuut. Hints for the Season. I. Watch the beehives tliis month, as the l)ee-motii is very plentiful at present. Qninby. in the AmtricnnxAgricnlturisl ', reconiHiends the ne of a mixture of " sugar or molasses, and a l.ttle vinejrar and water making the" contrast nsjreenble—the sweet and the sour, Rut this in shallow dishes, snncers, or tin bakinpr dishes, and set them among the bees at evening ' — Next morning moths of all kinds will be found in the liquid, and may then be strained out and destroyed, and the mixture used the fol lowing evening. 11. In watering plants that, arc suffering from drought, do it thoroughly. Soak the earth to the depth of one or even two feet and to an extent in diameter proportionate to the plants, which is at least as far as the branches extend in trees, and to double the extent in small specimens such as rose-bushes. Previous to watering, remove a few inches of the sur face soil, and replace aftewards. If the soil is mulched, removing the soil is not necessary. 111. The present is a good time to drain land. Help can be had easily, at reasonable rates, and there is always considerable time to spare during this month. When you do, drain work according to a plan, and yon will not at a future time find it necessary to relay with larger tile, or sink your drains deeper. IV. Keep your corn clean by removing all weeds, and hoe often, for by this means your crop will be increased. Where weeds grow, and the soil is baked, the crop will be light. V. Clean your seed-wheat thoroughly from chess and the seeds of all weeds. Wash it in strong brine, and skim off all the floating grains of every kind. Dust with lime when wet, and it will kill the spores of smut.—[ Ohio farmer, Aug. T. * Aoßict'i.Tcrt.u. TIII THS. —The following state- 1 ments will be found correct as to the soils long under cultivation. 1. All lands 011 which clover or the grasses are grown, must either have lime in them naturally, or that mineral must be artificially supplied. It matters but very little whether it be supplied in the form of stone, oyster lime or marl. 2. All permanent improvement of lands, must look to lime as its basis. 3. Lands which have been long in culture, will be benefitted by the application of phos phate of lime, and it is unimportant whether that deficiency be supplied in the form of bone dust, guano, native phosphate of lime, compost of flesh, or that of oyster-shell lime—or marl, If the lands need lime alone. 4. No lands can be preserved in a high state of fertility, unless clover or grasses are culti vated ia the course of rotation. 5. Mouid is indispensable in every sod, and a healthy supply can be preserved through i the cultivation of clover and the grasses, the turning in of green crops, or by application of composts rich elements of mould. G. All highly contentrated animal manures are increased in value, and their benefits pro longed by admixtures, with plaster, salt, or with pulverized charcoal. 7. Deep ploughing greatly improves the productive powers of every variety of soil that is not wet. 8. Subsoiling sound land, that is land that is not wet, is eminently conducive to increas ed production. if. All wet lands should be drained. 10. All grnm crops should be harvested before the grain is thoroughly ripe. 11. Clover, as well as grasses intended for hay, should be moved when in bloom. 12. Sandy lands can be most effectually im proved by clay. When such laiftls require "liming or marling, the lime or marl is-most beneficially applied when made into a compost with clay. In slacking lime salt brine is bet ter than water. 13. The cropping of grain to be fed to stock operates as a saving cf at least twenty five per cent. 14. Drainiug of wet lands and of marshes adds to their value, by making them to pro ducc more and by improving the health of the neighborhood. 15. To mannre or lime wet lands, is to throw manure, lime and labor away. WATERING PERSPIRING HORSES.—A Snbsrei ber in Warren, It. 1., inquires our opinion in regard to "giving water to horses when they are sweaty." If horses are to be driven or worked at once after drinking, it will do no harm to give them water to a moderate extent when hot or sweating; but if they are to stand still for a half hour, more or less, especially if exposed to cold air during this time, they should not be allowed to drink over two quarts of water till they get cold, which will not be less then from one to two hours, ordinarily. AGRICULTURE AND LITERATURE. —Farming is the best employment for a literary man, if he has only been brought up to it in his youth. Jt interests the mind, without exciting it, and can be made to strengthen the body without wearying it. If Walter Scott's wild, out-of door exercise, was the stimulus of his genius, and when lie', quitted Abbotsford for lvlinburgh and incessant literature, the golden bowl was broken at the fountain. One of the most vigo rous writers of the Quarterly Review used to spend six hours a day at the plough, and then write with a furore. When our literary men turn farmers, our farmers become also literary men, our natiou will have reached its highest point. KCOXMY OF THE FARM. —To drive business be up witli the sun. A late beginning usually m ikes a worrying day with an unsatisfactory amount of labor done at night. Have jour tools, and places to keep them in, that no time may be lost in searching for them or in going to borrow. Spend a little time to root out the stutnps, old roots or large stones, which the plow has brought up for years. Leave no waste, uncultivated places about the farm. The soil may as well produce a crop of vegeta bles as weeds. Set out a few shade and fruit trees, about the buildings, and along the lanes and roads. Your wife and children will thank you in after time. There is economy in it too. To KEEP IL rrtß. —Have a stone-jar (or butter firkin, the first is the best.) half full of brine, that will H >at an egg, sugar may be added but it is not indispensable. Into this drop your rolls, or prints of butter when thor oughly worked and ready for use. Keep the jar closely covered, and your will probably not have a plate of oily butter on the table first instead of the lust thing at meal times.
