J i DOE \Y tLAior. —The House did itself honor
by defeating the Senate bill to abolish Judge
Wilraot's district.
Foremost among those who disgraced them
selves in this movement, stand Buckalew and
Judge Bell, of the Senate, and Calhoun of the
House. Buekalew has some excuse in the
fact that he is a reckless partisan ; but even
be condemned the scheme when it was first
! projected, and yielded his better judgment on
ly at the last. Judge Bell had no excuse.—
He represents a Republican district, and has
been, in his own person, an illustration of po
. litical magnanimity on tbe part of his oppo
nents, for he was once commissioned as Judge
by an opposition Governor. The magnanimi
ty, it proves, was thrown away. Throw not
your pearls before swine, lest they turn again
1 and rend you.
The part which Calhoun took in trying to
j force the bill was utterly disgraceful. There
| was no occasion for such a service from him,
1 and he ought to have had sense enough to
| leave such dirty work to the nnderstrnppers
who had no reputation to lose. His failure,
| after his voluntary debasement, must have
anide hini feel particularly mean ; and if he
; becomes a candidate again this fall, we have
•no doubt that the people will make him feel
still meaner.— Pittsburg Gazette.

! CONVERSION* or AN ACTRESS —Lucy Ham
ilton, twenty years of ago, English by birth,
an actress bv taste, pretty by general conces
sion was " converted'' in Boston last week.—
An early passion for the stage finally brought
her upon it; first in England then in Boston.
Site was going home from the theatre one
night with her sister, also an actress, and while
passing a church was attracted by hearing
some one exhorting iu a loud way ; she went.
in, her sister would not. The next night not
being cost in a play, she visited the church !
, instead of the theatre. She became convinced
| that she was a great sinner, that the thea're '
was a bad place, that it was her duty to aban- 1
don the stage. At length her mind became
:*0 much disturbed, that she left the theatre
aud "sought peace in Christ,'' destroyed her
I stage wardrobe aud e.-chewcd Shakespeare and
Bourciault. During iter remarks she took oc
casion to express an oppiuion that the theatre
was an exceedingly bad place—in fact, no other
than the " gateway to hull." The influence cf
• the theatre -ho felt >urc, was baneful to the
: morals and piety of a people, and none could
attend the one and have the other. She closed

FATAL KFKFI TS .F FOUND. —Great sounds or
I violent concussions of the air, MICII a- those
produced by large cannon or loud thunder,
produce ordinarily most astounding and, in
some instances, overwhelming effects on men
and animals. Brewster relates, that when
1 peace was proclaimed in London in LG'JT, two
troops of horses were dismounted and drawn
in line, in order to lire their volleys. Opposite
the centre of the line was the door of a butch
er's shop, where there was a mastiff dog of
j great courage. This dog was sleeping by the
lire ; but when the first volley was fired, it
iine iiatt-Iy started up. ran into another room,
, and hid itself below the bed. On the firing of
the second volley the dog rose, ran several
: times about the room, trembling violently, ati !
i apparently in great agony. When the third
i volley was fired, the dog ran about once or
twice with great violence, and instantly tell
down dead, throwing up blood from its mouth

AN UNVOI'.ND HICKORY* BUSH.— Mr. Cox of

who, a short time since, declared that " the
President might as well attempt to root out all
the hickories from the wo.-teru woods as to

I his remark by rendering himself unworthy of

IM F.NDtARtsM. —The house of EP.ASTDS EV-
I AXS, Esq., on Paige street, was set on fire at
! about 12 o'clock fast night, by placing u bun
dle- of rags, saturated with canipliene, against
' the wall, at the back stoop, and applying fire
,to it. A colored servant woman discovering
the light, aroused the family, and though the
! blaze had penetrated through the crevices ol
! the door, the progress of the fire was arrested
' without raising any alarm.
There are some circumstances connected
with this attempt at incendiarism which may
lead to the detection of the guilty party. : —
