Farmer Williams' Tool House.
A FAF.MbR's FAMDI.F. AMONG 1113 NEIGHBORS.
One day, early this season, I strolled over to
Neighbor Williams', for, as yon already know,
I like to be friendly to all, and we ate a pret
ty social class over here. I did not wait for
u " rainy da)-" this time, as 1 had n few im
portant topics aliout Summer crops, &c., to
talk with friend W. about. But I found him
too much occupied to chat any. He was in a
great hurry to begin his plowing, for the
ground was in nice order. The horses and ox
en were waiting to be harnessed, or yoked,
end such a hurrying, scolding time I have sel
dom seen.
" Jim, I say, where iR the holts and clevis ?"
" I don't know, sure boss. Not a bit of one
could I see at all." " Well, go and look all
around, and under the place where the harrow
was, and 9ee." The boss was tired of waiting,
and went too. In the meantime Tom came up
with—" Masther, and there is three teeth out
of that same harrow." " Well, Tom, go and
get the axe and I will dress out some at the
wood pile." After a long hunt, Jim and the
boss had found two clevises under the rubbish,
but not a bolt. Now what must they do.—
" Jim, go over to Neighbor Thomas' am] bor
a couple of bolts ; he has plenty, for 1 saw a
number in his tool box," 15v this time Tom
returned, with—" Masther, and it was verself
that left the axe up in the woods, for I couldn't
find it all." Here was a dilemma for my easy
careless friend : but as the barrow had stood
asrainst the fence, exposed to weather all the
t in**, ami in poor condition ; the teams must !
wait for Torn to go half a mile lor the axe the
1 oss had forgotten to l>ring home. Jim came
luck with the borrowed articles and begun to
harness his team ; but lo ! one of the traces
hod ripped, and Jim had to take his shoe string
to tie it up with, and the whiffle-trees were out
of order. Here commenced a lnint for the
hammer to mend it, but, as was the case al
most invariably, the one that used it last just
laid it down in some out of the way place, and
a search had to l>e made every time it wa- \
wanted. But it will he too tedious to relate
all the mishaps of that busy day—how the pin
(wooden of course) of the oxbow was lost, and
the chain was found where they drew the last
logs out of the woods, Ac., Ac. After two
hours waiting, the teams finally moved oIT to ;
their allotted work, but the plows were so ru>-.
ty from exposure that they would scarcely '
turn the soil, and the harness was constantly j
giving out. I could not see that there was a j
place for any tool on the farm, —for hoes, shov-!
els, forks, rakes, harness and everything, was I
lying about in the corners, or 011 the ground
as the case might be. The truth is Neighbor
Williams Tool House is as large as " ell out
of doors."
The teams being out of the way. nntil some
thing should break, which I predicted soon
would he the case, Neighbor showed tne a
whole lot of seeds he had recently purchased.
Tie said he meant to try everything this year
that was new, for he missed it last year in not
buying a good stock of Chinese sugar-cane.—
Aud sure enough he had a lot of them. There
were different kinds of corn, several of oats,
Rome nnts resembling the grass nuts that grow
in South Carolina, which lie caiied earth t?l
--inonds, the Japan pea, Ac. lie was very con
fident all of them would be aspceulation, even if
he did not require the stump puller to extri
cate his Dioscoreas. or Chinese yams, last Fall.
But I fear he will be unsuccessful, for he is
such a man for new things, and loves so well
to attend at doings, especially agricultural Fairs
in the country, he will pay but little attention
to them after they are planted, lie loves to
take pri7.es at the fairs, and many a one he
got, too, as I found by the books and caps he
exhibited to the view of every one that enter
ed his house. He always took a nice colt, calf,
pig, or even a hill of corn, and gave it ail the
attention and labor he could to push it ahead
and neglect all the rest. Vet he was a fur
more noted man in the county than his thrifty
pains-takirg.n eighl or Thomas.
A few days after this I met Thomas, and, I
asked him if he was not disposed to go largely
into the raising of some of these new seeds, es
pecially the Sorghum, for sale, and his charac
teristic reply 1 shall not soon forget. It was
this : " A wise man will never go to catch
clams at high water.'' Ah, I thought, how
many do this very thing As sr.on as the wa
ter get* high, how many rush blindly into spec
ulation, while the clams have previously been
caught and sold. " S.
WHEN TO FATTEN SWINE. —Most farmer',
delay this business quite too long. It is a well
ascertained fact that fat nnd flesh are laid on
much more easily in warm than in cold weath
er. No food is wasted now in keeping np the
heat of the ar.ima! system. The porkers should
not he allowed to run in the road or the pas
ture after the heat of the summer is past. If
in lean condition, they may be penned by the
middle of August, and pnt upon full feed.
We believe four pounds of pork can be
made now cheaper than three pounds can be
made in December. Not only is the weather
greatly in favor of the farmer, but he has now
on hand a multitude of perishable articles-in
the field and trarden, that can readily be turned
info exellent bacon. There is the refuse sweet
corn, which swine willpreedilv eat, leaf, stalk
and ear. There are the beets and the cabbage
leaves, the unused snrotner squashes and to
matoes, that will rot unless transferred to the
feeding trough. These fresh articles mixed
with the corn-meal diet, promote the thrift of
the animals and keep un good digestion. In
the winter this kind of diet is scarce, and the
uniform corn and men) soon statia their appe
tites and they do not gain as much in flesh.
When the process of fattening is began, the
pigi should have all the feed they will eat up
clean, until they are ready for the knife. A
squealing pig is a cry that should never be
heard about the farmer's premises. It will
not pay.
SAVE Yarn OWN GRASS SEEP. — Many far
mers neglect to save their own grass seeds,
because it needs attention at a time when they
are most busy with their grain and hay ; hot if
farmers generally would make it a point to
save seed for their own use, yltey would find
their account in it, both in prime cost and, in
not being imposed upon by buying foul seed
from another man's farm who has no interest
in keeping our land free of weeds.— Ex.
tSf Once it took ten mills to make a cent,
but now twenty mills scarcely umke a ceut, so
they say in Lowell.

Ac., Ac. Indeed very few are the diseases in which a
Purgative Medicine is not more or less required, and much
sickness and suffering might be prt vented, ii a harinle-s
but effectual Cathartic were more freely used. No per
son can feel well while a costive liabit of Is dy prevails :
besides it s..on generates serious and often tatal diseases,
which might have been avoided by the timely and judi
cious use if a good purgative. This Isalike tree ot folds.
Feverish symptoms, and Billions derangements. They
all tdhd to become or produce the deep seated and for
midable distempers which load the liearscs all o*er the
land. Hence a reliable family physic is of the first im
port in. eto the public health, and this Pill lias been per
fected with consummate skill to meet that demand. An
extensive trial of its virtues by Physicians. Professors,
and Patients, lias shown results surpassing anything
hi therto known of an} medicine. Cures have been ef
fected beyond belief, were tliey nt substantiated by per
sons of such exalted positions'and character as to forbid
the suspicion of untruth.
Among the eminent gentlemen who have testified in
favor of these Pills, we may mention :
Boot. A. A. HAYES, Analytical Chemist of Boston,
and State Assayer of Massachusetts, whose high Profes
sional character is endorsed bv the—
Hon. EDWARD EVERETT, Senator of the United
States.
ROBERT C. WINTHROP, Ex-Speaker of the House of
Representatives.
ABBOTT LAWRENCE. Minister Plen. to England.
+JOHX 15. FITZPATRICK, Catholic Bishop of Boston:
also
Dr. J. R. CHILTON, Practical Chemist of New York
City, endorsed by
lion. W. L. MARCY, Secretary of State.
WM- R. ASTOR, the richest man in America.
S. EKLANDA Co., Proprietors ol the Metropolitan
Hotel, and others.
Did space permit, wc could give many hundred certi
ficates from all parts where the Pills have been used, but
evidence even more convincing than ihe experience of
eminent public men, is found in their effects upon trial.
These Pills, the result "f long investigation and study,
are offered to the public as the best and most complete
which the present state of medical science can afford.—
They are compounded not of tb drug-- themselves, hut of
the medicinal virtues only of Vegetable remedies extract
ed by Chemical process in a state of purity, and combin
ed together in such a manner as to insure the best results.
Thi system of composition for medicines has been found
in Cherry Pectoral and Pills both, to produce a more ef
ficient remedy than had hitherto been obtained by any
process. The reason is perfectly obvious. While hr the
tdd mode of composition, (-very medicine is burdened with
more or less of acrimonious and injurious finalities, by
this each individual virtue only that is desired for the cu
rative effect is present. All the inert and obnoxious
qualities of each substance employed arc left behind, the
curative virtues only being retained. Hence it is self
evident the effects -houid prove as they have proved,
more purely remedial, and the Pills a more powerful an
tidote to disease than any other medicine known to the
world.
As it is frequently expedient that many medicines
should be take u underthe ' oinisc 1 of an attending Physi
cian, and as he could not properly judge of a remedy
without knowing its composition, 1 have suppled the ac
curate Formula? by which both my Pectoral and Pills are
made, to the whole body of Practitioners in the United
.States anu British American Provinces. If however there
should lie any one who has n,.j received them, they will
be forwarded by mail to his request.
Of all the Patent Medicines that are offered, how few
would be taken i! their composite,!! was known! Their
life consists in their mystery. 1 have no mysteries.
The composition of my preparations is laid open to nil
men, and all who are competent to judge on the subject
freely acknowledge their convictions of their intrinsic
merits. The Cherry Pectoral was pronounced by scienti
fic men to be a wonderful medicine before its effects were
known. Many eminent Physicians have declared the
same thing of my Pills, and even more confidently, and
are willing to certify that their anticipations were more
than realized by their effects upon trial.
They operate by their powerful influence on the inter
nal viscera to purify the blond and stimulate it into heal
thy action—remove the obstructions of the stomach, bow
els. liver, and other organs of the imdy, restoring their
irregular action to health, and by correcting, wherever
they exist, such derangement.-, asare the first origin -of
disease.
