farmer's department. Look out for the Winter. The falling leaves reminds us that the cold and stormv months are near at hand—are even here. Silently, hut steadily aud surely the seasons revolve, each bringing its peculiar pleasures and duties. The boys through the country, we take it, arc now enjoying them selves in gathering chestnuts, beechnuts, but ternuts, walnuts, aud the like, for their con sumption during the long Winter evenings. Farmers and provident housekeepers general ly are storing away in their cellars, apples, Y\ in ter pears and vegetables and supplying their barns and sheds with all things needful for the health and comfort of their stock. Alas ! we fear we must recall the last statement, or modify it somewhat. There are farmers who neglect some of their duties at this season, and need occasional prompting from their neighbors or from the agricultural press. To such we say, Look out for Winter ! See that your barns are in complete repair. It is economy to spend all needful time anil labor in doing this. All domestic animals as you know, must keep up their vital heat by some means, to about 100 degs., and this can be done wholly by consuming food, or in part | by food, and partly by shelter, if they are j left out of doors, or kept in dilapidated sta-1 bles, they will eat us much more to keep them- i selves warm than if they were comfortably i housed. And besides, a uniform temperature , is healthier for animals, as for men, than a changeable one. It is great folly to keep stock out of doors in Wiuter for the sake of " hardening them." Our exhortation, then, is to give horses, cattle, sheep, and even pigs and poultry good Winter quarters. Those which are fitting for market, will of course need more shelter and care than others which are simply being Win tered over ; but all should be made comfort able. Battens should be nailed over the cracks on the exposed sides of the barus, every loose board should be tightened, and double walls in the immediate neighborhood of the liorse stalls would not be thrown labor away. Then, as to fodder, see to it that you have enough. Short commons in Winter is no mark of good farming. Pinch yourself, rather than your stool. To make food go a great ways : provide yourself with a straw-cutter. Corn stalks cut fine will be eaten up to the bulbs by cattle ; and straw, clover and coarse hay, will be eaten mnch cleaner than if fed out uneut They will also be better digested. If grain or meal of any kind is mixed with the cut food it should always be moistened with water.— Apples, carrots, turnips, potatoes, Ac., should be kept on hand, ami fed out at intervals in the Winter. The dumb beasts relish these dishes exceedingly, and every trne farmer can read their satisfaction in their expressive faces aud such readings does him good. SALTING PORK. — It is important to have the pork well cooled before salting. And it should never be allowed to freeze. It should always have a great supply of salt, and of the strong est quality, and brine should be made and poured into the barrel. For if nothing but water is put in with the salt the pork may be injured before the salt is melted enough to make good brine. The meat should hare a weight upon it, to keep it under the brine ; for if pieces of meat are permitted to rise above the brine, and re maiu there for any considerable time, they will be tainted, and will not taste sweet, as well-salted meat always will. A wooden cover is often used to keep the meat uuder the brine, but a stone cover is better. A hole may be driiled in a stone cover and a handle inserted at a very small cost. In regard to the scum that onr correspon dent speaks of we say that standing pools of water, either salt or fresh, will have a scum on them. Agitation is the remedy which na ture provides. The ocean is agitated to keep it pure, and agitation, coupled with salt, is ef fectual. Fonda have impure water —nnd why ? Ponds of amail dimensions are not agitated enough. As a general rule, the larger the more free from scum. Running brook" have purer water than ponds, because in running the water mingles with the atmosphere—the grand purifier of all things. Motion, in streams of wnter, birngs all the foul or rilev matter in contact with the other matter on the bank that has as affinity for it, so that a long brook may run itself pure though it may have been affected with filthy matter near its source. Agitation of the pork barrel daily will have the effect of preventing the accumulation of scum on the surface ; but if this is not conve nient, the white surface may be skimmed off as soon as it rises. It is quite important to every family to have good salt pork. It is the very cheapest meat that we can procure, and for cooking vegetables it is the best that is used. It needs no butter to enrich it, but it enriches ali with which it comes in contact. Farmers should not fail to have a supply of pork in the cellar. Then, if the butcher forgets to eotne, there wilt be something for dinner.— Exchange. SAVE THE SOOT.—This, thongh generally thrown into the streets and wasted is one of the best manures. It is extensively nied in England, and when only 15 or 20 bushels are applied to the acre, it induces tha most luxuri ant crops of wheat, and other grains. It con tains. iti small compass, almost all the ingredi ents of the coal or wood used for fuel. It al so contains several salts of ammonian, magne sia, lime and muriatic acid. Its components are toe natural food or stimnlents of plants, and it can nsed to great advantage as a con centrated fertilizer, to stimulate germinating seed in the drill It is not only sown broad cast with the grain, but it is applied to the root crops with the best results. Potatoes and carrots, especially, are benefited !>y it - Six quarts of sootto a hogshead of water make an excellent liquid manure for the gar den. Iteau be applied with safety to all gar den crops, and will pnv for saving. In put ting the stoves, furnaces and fire places in or der for Winter, bear it in mind, that soot is valuable, and will be wanted for Spring use. One, two, three or more barrets can be saved easily in most families, especially where wood is burned. At a recent celebration of West India Emancipation, at Pittsburgh, Pa., a eolored orator let slip the following :—"• When a na tion turns from God and humanity, then God catche-i that nation by the neck and twists it up and hurls it down there, futher than a tun's U':m s,hid taUh it in a hcu-ru) yt'irt." mmljanbice, £'c- TOWANDA HARDWARE CUTLERY, IRON AND STOVE STORE. Indeed very few are the diseases in which a Purgative Medicine is not more or less required, and much sickness and suffering might be prevented, if a harmless but effectual Cathartic were more freely used. No per son can fee! well while a costive habit of body prevails ; besides it soon generates serious and often fatal diseases, which might have been avoided by the timely and judi cious use of a good purgativ. This isalike true of Colds, Feverish symptoms, and Billions derangements. They all tend to become or produee the deep seated and for midable distempers which load the hearses all over the land. Hence a reliably family physic is of the first im portance to the public health, and this Pill lias been per fected with consummate skill to meet that demand. An extensive trial of its virtues by Physicians, Professors, and Patients, has shown results surpassing anything hrtherto known of any medicine. Cures have been ef fected beyond belief, were they not substantiated by per sons of such exalted positions and character as to forbid the suspicion of untruth. Ainoug the eminent gentlemen who have testified in favor of these i'ills, we may mention : J>oet. A. A HAYES, Analytical Chemist of Boston, and State Assayer of Massachusetts, whose high Profes sional character is endorsed bv the— Hon. EDWARD EVERETT, Senator of the United estates. ROBERT ('. WINTIIROP, Ex-Speaker of the House of Representatives. ABBOTT LAWRENCE, Minister Plen. to England. +JOHN B. HTZPATUICK, Catholic Bishop of Boston; also i>r. .1 R. CHILTON. Practical Chemist of New York City, endorsed by lion. W. L M VItCY, Secretary of state. WM. B. ASTOR, the richest man in America. S. KELANDA Co.. Proprietors of the Metropolitan Hotel, and others. Did space permit, we could give many hundred certi ficates from all parts where the Pills have been used, but evidence even more convincing than the experience of eminent public men, is found in their effects upon trial. These Pills, the result of long investigation and study, are offered to the public as the best and most complete which the present state of medical science can afford.— They are compounded not of the drugs themselves, hut of the medicinal virtues only of Vegetable remedies extract ed by Chemical process in a state of purity, and combin ed together in such a manner as to insure the best results. This system of composition fur medicines has been found in Cherry Pectoral and Pills both, to produce a more ef ficient remedy than had hitherto been obtained by any process. The reason is perfectly obvious. While by the old mode of composition. every medicine is burdened with more or less of acrimonious and injurious qualities, by this each individual virtue only that is desired for the cu rative effect is present. All the inert and obnoxious qualities of each substance empioved are left behind, the curative virtues only being retained. Hence it is self evident the effects should prove as they have proved, more purely remedial, aud the Pills a more powerful an tidote to disease than any other medicine known to the world. As it is frequently expedient that many medicines should be taken under the counsel of an attending Physi cian, and as he could not properly judge of a remedy without knowing its composition, 1 have suppled the ac curate Pormulse by which both my Pectoral and Pills are made, to the whole body of Practitioners in the United States arm British American Provinces. If however there should he any one who has not received them, they will be forwarded by mail to his request. Of all the Patent Medicines that are offered, how few would be taken it their composition was known! Their life consists in their mystery. I have no mysteries. The composition of my preparations is laid open to all men. and all who are competent to judge on the subject freely acknowledge their convictions of their intrinsic merits. The Cherry Pectoral was pronounced by scienti fic men to be a wonderful medicine before its effects were known. Many eminent Physicians have declared the - same thing of my Pills, and even mere confidently, and are willing to certify that their anticipations were more than realized by their effects upon trial. They operate" by their powerful influence on the inter nal viscera to purify the blood and stimulate it into heal thy action—remove the obstructions of the stomach, bow els, liver, sod other organs of the body, restoring their irregular action to health, and by correcting, wherever they exist, such tie range incuts as'are the first origin of disease.
