Autumn Hints,

"Waste and useless ground can now lie drained,
which, if left until the spring, would be una
voidable for another year. Manv have been
astonished at their own success in this work.
Two years since a farmer near this city drained
an ugly swamp, thinking it might answer for
willows the following spring but failing to
obtain cuttings, the land became so dry the
last of May, he was induced ♦< try corn, and
raised an excellent crop. Digging stumps,
grading and all out-door jobs of this nature can
done now better than at any other season.—
Our springs are short, unsettled, and generally
very unpleasant. Oar autumns are glorious
all foreign travellers agree that, the beauty
of the American autumn is unequalled. Let
it be well improved.
Hogs for early killing should now nccive
attention, and be put on full rations. This
matter is delayed generally too long, The fine
weather in the fall is the very bci-t time fur
making pork cheap. It will cost less to man
ufacture it now than during the cold weather
of early winter, when the pigs will have all
they cau do to keep warm.
This is the best time for sowing timothy,
nnd it is a question worthy of consideration,
whether the growing of timothy and clover
seed might not be made profitable in the " (Jen
esee country," now that our great staple,
wheat, has failed.
.Manure is much more easily made in the
fall and winter than in the warm weather of
Fll miner, and the quality is better. Decompo
sition takes place more slowly and irregularly,
and the valuable gasscs are more easily ob
tained. Then there is less danger of loss by
burning or becoming lire-tanged, as this
burning is generally termed. Muck Irom the
swamps, the remains old straw stacks, nil re
fuse and coarse stuff that cannot be made
available for feed, should be gathered together,
with the view of turning it into manure by
spring. Many fanners in some sections of our
country spend hundreds of dollars for guano,
and other fertilizers, that they might save if
they would give more attention to making ma
nure at home. In these parts, little guano is
used, but many crops are starved down to half
their natural proportions for want of proper
feeding.
Above all tilings, save fodder. Let noth
ing be wasted that will help the stock through
the winter. Don't sell anything in the fall
that you may have to buy back again in the
spring at double the price you obtained for it.
If you have too much stock for your feed, pro
cure more at once, or sell off part of the stock.
A small number well fed will be more profita
ble than a large number badly provided for.
During the first part of the winter feed well
but not lavishly, and improve as the spring
approaches.— Rural yew Yorker.
OCTOBER.— Work to be Done. —Make com
post industriously ; use those made in August
on your clayey lands, ridging and backfurrow
ing them, running the sub-soil plough in the
bottom of the open furrows. By this system
the manures will occupy the centre of the
riilges, and thus their grasses during decompo
sition will be absorbed, instead of passing off in
the atmosphere. The sub-soiling between
ridges will prevent the ridges from compact
ing by rains, and the sub-soil will be rendered
fit for sustaining plants another year from re
ceiving the atmosphere and the carbonic acid
and ammonia carried in by the rains. The
frequent freezings and thawings during winter
will render the ridges pulverulent by spring,
and suitable for early culture. Do not plow
sandy lands in the fall.
Rake up leaves from the woods as they fall,
and put them in the compost heaps. Cart
headlands to the manure shed. Have a good
supply of materials suitable for bedding, near
the s:tab!es. Do not attempt to fatten more cat
tle than you can fully supply with food, or they
will not flourish well even if fully supplied.—
Young cattle cannot be brought up in flesh at
an outlay which will pay, if neglected early.
Skin old woods of the surface soil, and rc
place half its value as manure with iiiue and
ftshc3 in the woods, and both farm and wood
land will gain in the exchange. (Jet all the
night-soil you can, and mix it with head-land,
Ac., for the compost heaps. Wet the compost
heaps with salt lye from the soap boiler's, if
you can get it. Use half a bushel of refuse
salt to every cord of compost, to prevent the
re-germination of weeds, grubs, Ac. Do not
forget that corn is more valuable when chang
ed to fat, than when found in the hog manure ;
and to secure the first condition, cook it before
feeding to hogs, or your manure will lie very
rich, at too high a cost. Mr. Ellsworth Ims
satisfactorially proved, that one pound of cook
ed corn, will make more pork than two pounds
fed in the raw state.
WINTER ONIONS AND LETTFCE. —You like
onions, either ns salad or otherwise? Would
you like to have tliern fresh very early in the
Spring, before they could grow after Spring
planting ? "Of course I would.'' Very well
then perhaps we can help you to them. Se
lect a good spot of ground, prepare it well, and
make one lied of onions about the 10th of Au
gust. Male another about the Ist of Septem
ber. Sow the seed quite thick. Let them
grow till Winter, keep the beds five from weeds
and thinning them out a very lit tic. When
Winter comes, cover them over with a good
coat of coarse litter. Further south, the cov
ering may be lighter. You may thus have
the onions for use to March or next year.—
TKey will be excellent then, if you like onions.
Sow a bed of lettuce in the same way, at
the same time or latter, and protect in the
same manner, and you have that luxury also
very early in Spring. Try both of these oper
ations and yoti will probably th ink us next

A NEW KIND OF FORAGE. — Prince Sell art zen
berg has lately made successful experiments in
some of his farms for converting the leaves of
the ash tree into forage for cows. About 50
lbs., of the leaves were, in October last, ar
ranged in a tub with alternative layers of salt,
and kept covered until the beginning of March
when they were taken out, mixed with chop
ped rye-straw, and given to the cows. This
new food appeared so palatable to them, that
they would select the leaves with the greatest
avidity, leaving the straw untouched. The
leaves were then given to them without any
mixture, and were eaten with the same rel
ish.
