J.trntct's gcprimcnt. Different Kinds of Soil. Boils are usually designated by terms ex pressive of t!ie predominant material in their composition, thus we hear sandy, loamy, grav elly, clayey, calcareous or chalky and alluvial soils. A sandy soil is that in which sand is the principal ingredient. Such soil is usually quite defective. It is so porous that it parts almost instantaneously with the moisture, and plants in it suffer from drouth. Ail the soluble parts of manures arc also quickly washed out of it, ami hence it requires continual additious to produce even a scanty growth. A clayey soil is that in which clay predomi nates. It may be considered the opposite of sandy, inasmuch as its effects are, that it re tains moisture too long, is too adhesive, in dry weather it becomes as hard as a burnt brick, impervious to dews or light showers, and when thoroughly saturated it is tough, and requires a long time to dry. A gravelly soil is one made up in greater part of small stones, pebbles, decomposed rock, Ac. A loamy soil is one we hear a great deal about, and may lie understood in various ways. It may be considered as a mixture of equal parts of sandy, clayey, and vegetable soil. It is neither so light as the sandy, on the one liaud, nor so tenacious as the clay on the oth er ; and as a general thing, contains such ele ments, uud is of such a texture, as to render it eligible for all ordinary purposes of cultiva tion, and especially so for fruit trees. Loa my soils ore spoken of as sandy loams, when sand forms a large ingredient, say one half their composition ; gravelly, when pretty largely mixed with small stones ; calcareous, when lime is found in them. Calcareous or chalky soils have a large amount of lime mixed with the other ingre dients of which they are composed. All the lands in limestone districts are of this charac ter. Peaty soil consists chiefly of vegetable mould from decayed marsh plants, in low, wet places. Alluvial soils are composed of decomposed vegetable substance, the sediment of rivers, and the materials washed down from neigh boring hills ; the valleys of all our rivers and streams are composed of this, and it is the richest of soils. GARDENlNG. —Gardening brings one under the favorable influences of homo. This is a positive advantage, and accrues both to him who follows gardening for a livelihood and to him who makes it the recreation of leisure.— The working man pursues his daily toil with in sight of his own gables ; his wife's cheerful song is wafted out to him through the open casement : his children some of them labor at bis side, and others soothe him with their in nocent prattle. lie who pursues gardening from a love for it, is not apt to spend much of his leisure in other and questionable amuse ments. The early morning finds him among his trees and plants, and when the day's busi ness or study is ended, he hies to his garden as the most delightful refuge from care. The pursuit of office or wealth is laid aside for the, study of nature ; the society of the street nnd market place is exchanged for Iho society of home. Ever}' man will have amusements of some kind, and his character is often deter mined, for good or evil, by the nature of his amusements. Gardening affords a rational recreation, and one which carries with it the salutary influences of home.— Coanlnj (Jcnl. ORCHARDS. —Under the universally prevail ing custom, to the contrary, we suppose it is almost useless to say that a profitable orchard cannot be grown in our day, by devoting the soil thereof to giain and grass crops. But the time will come—must soon come—if we are to continue to have a proper supply of fruit, when the growth of al! young orchards will be promoted by cultivating the soil with such crops as require open cultivation, such as corn, potatoes, buckwheat, and root crops.— Grass is the great enemy to orchards, and this appears to bo the favorite crop with our far mers. It is beginning to be understood that fruit trees require suitable cultivation, and that fruit culture will pay independent of any Other crops.— Mi ni. Ledger. A OKK M.TLKAI. DISCOVERY. —A Paris letter wii'.er states that a scientific gentleman dis covered, two years ago, embedded with some embalmed bodies, a species of wheat not then in existence. In the time of the early Gallic kings a certain quantity of wheat was placed in the coffins of embalmed bodies. Some of it was sown, and it yielded from sixteen to twenty stalks to a grain, while there was on an average twenty more grains in the head than in the ordinary wheat. A considerable quantity of this ancient wheat was sown on the government farm last fall. Great reports arc received of its productiveness. The ordi nary wheat of France is believed to be only a degeneration of this ancient grain, deteriorat ed by centuries of reproduction. This disco very takes France back fourteen centuries for seed wheat, and it is expected will put her in possession of one-eighth more agricultural wealth than she possessed before the discove ry.—Bo si on Journal. I'm ofi" Bins.—This is the time to exam ine newly planted fruit trees, or those of two years out ; and by rubbing off many of the buds now pushing forth, form the shape of the tree for after years. Cherry trees should not be permitted to fonn a whist of branches from the body oftcner than once in two feet. Pinch oft the end bnds of straggling branches, as well as of those grown beyond their limit for per fect forma lion of the tree. If newly planted trees show blossom buds, they should now be picked off. If permitted to grow and form fruit, it will exhaust the tree, and often cause its death the second year. Dwarf pear-trees can now be shaped better even than by pruning in August or early spring, and fill the growth of the tree can be saved, or its food given to the production of Examine carefully the probable direc tion in which the bud would grow if icft on the tree, and rub off only those that promise to interfere with its perfect shape, if the tree is already straggling in form, probably nearly all tl'C end buds will require to be rubbed off. li the variety inclines to grow too compact, now is tie time to make it more open, by sim ply rubbing out a few buds. Side, Back, and Limbs, Female Complaints, I Ac ..fir. Indeed very few are the diseases in which a Purgative Medicine is not more or less required, and much sickness and suffering might be prevented, if a harmless but effectual Cathartic were more freely used. No per son can feel well while a costive habit of body prevails ; besides it soon generates serious and often fatal diseases, which might have been avoided by the timely and judi cious use of a good ; urgntiv. This is alike true of Colds, Feverish symptoms, and Billions derangements. They i all tend to become or produce the deep seated and for- j miduhlc distempers which load the hearses all over the : land. Hence a reliable family physic is of the tirst iin portanceto the public health, and'this Pill has been per fected with consummate skill to meet that demand. An i xtcn.-ive trial of its virtues by Physicians, Professors, and Patients, has shown results surpassing anything hitherto known of auy medicine. Cures have been ef fected beyond belief, were they not substantiated by per sons of such exalted positions and character as to forbid the suspicion of untruth. Among the eminent gentlemen who have testified in favor of these Pills, we may mention : Doit. A. A. HAVES, Analytical Chemist of Boston, and State Assaycr of Massachusetts, whose high Profes sional character is endorsed by the— IJon, EDWAIU) EVERETT, Senator of the United States. ROBERT C*. WIN'THROP, Ex-Speaker of the House of Representatives. ABBOTT LAWRENCE, Minister I'len. to England. fJOHN B. FITZPATIUCK, Catholic Bishop of Boston; also Dr. J. R. CHILTON, Practical Chemist of New York Citv, endorsed by Hon. W. L. MA ROY, Secretary of State. WM. B. ASTOR, the richest man in America. S. EELAND A Co., Proprietors of the Metropolitan Hotel, and others. Did space permit, we could give many hundred certi ficates from all parts where the Pills have been used, but evidence even more convincing than the experience of eminent public men, is found in their effects upon trial. These Pills, the result of long investigation and study, are offered to the public as the best and most complete which thts present slate of medical science ran afford.— They are compounded not of the drugs themselves, but of the medicinal virtues only of Vegetable remedies extract ed by t'hemieal process in a state of purity, and combin ed together in such a manner as to insure the best results. This system of composition for medicines has been found in Cherry Pectoral and Pills both, to produce a more ef ficient remedy than had hitherto been obtained by any process. The reason is perfectly obvious. While by the <dd ni"dc of composition, every medicine is burdened with more or less of acrimonious and injurious qualities, by this each individual virtue only that is desired for the cu rative effect is present. All the inert and obnoxious qualities of each substance employed are left behind, tl,e curative virtues only being retained. Hence it is self evident the effects should prove as tliey have proved, more purely remedial, and the Pills a more powerful an tidote to disease than any other medicine known to the world. As it is frequently expedient that many medicines should be taken under the counsel of an attending Physi cian, and as he could not properly judge of a remedy without knowing its composition, 1 have suppled the ac curate Formula' by which loth my Pectoral and Pills are made, to the whole ltody of Practitioners in tire United States ano British American Provinces. If however there should he any one who has not received them, they will tie forwarded by mail to his request. Of all the Patent Medicines that are offered, liow few would be taken it their composition was known ! Their life consists in their mystery. I have no mysteries. The composition of my preparations is laid open to all men, and all who are competent to judge on the subject freely acknowledge their convictions of their intrinsic merits. The Uherry Pectoral was pronounced hy scienti fic men to lie a wonderful medicine before its effects were known. Many eminent Physicians have declared the same thing of my Pills, and even more confidently, and are willing to certify that their anticipations were more than realized hy their effects upon trial. They operate hy their powerful influence on the inter nal viscera to purify the blood and stimulate it into heal thy action—remove the obstructions of the stomach, bow els, liver, and other organs of the body, restoring their irregular action to health, and by correcting, wherever they exist, such derangements as are the first origin of disease.
