.farmer's geprtmcut. To Fatten Horses. Every horseman knows that a horse looks twenty per cent better if fattened in a short time thuu if several months arc employed in the process. I don't believe in loading a horse down with fat—they do better in medi Jim condition. A horse, if not very thin, can be pnt in tine condition in three weeks Unt a narrow-headed, yard-necked, narrow-breast ed, light quartered animal, if he has never been fat, will give you a two or three month s task, and he will look better for all the flesh 3011 may put 011 him. To fattcu a poor horse quickly .is no easy t isk. ft is to be done by a variety of the best feed, and with close attention in giving it. Many persons feed sufficiently liberal, and yet their horses are low in flesh, simply because of the carelcssuess and irregular man ner in which it is given out. W hen I wish to fatten a poor horse, I put his stable in a clean and neat condition, and commence by giving him small feeds of corn or oats, (which ever he takes the best,) every two hours from the time of risiug iu the morning till 1 retire at night—say six or eight feeds a day —taking care so as to feed that he will always eat with a relish, and be hungry for the next meal. At 110 time do I suffer his food to lay by him ; if he leaves any I take it from him and let him stand till he asks for it. For the first ten days I am careful not to let him get all he will eat. There is no better way of getting a horse's appetite up to the fattening poiut than to feed very often of good, clean feed. By paying strict attention for ten days, you will have him fairly under way ; and this is the most difficult part of the task. If at any time he gets cloyed, so that he refuses to eat, let him staud till he gets hungry. During this time his stable must be lent elcau and comfortable, lie should have a little hay, but as much pure soft water as lie will drink three times a day. Salt all the time at his will. He must be curried thorough ly once every day. Few men curry a horse as it should be done. Take your curry-comb firmly in your hand and with it make a quick motion back aud forth, pass all over your horse, getting to the skin, and removing the dirt therefrom ; then pass all over more geutly with comb and brush, replacing the hair, and finish with the naked hand —putting every hair to its place. Never give medicine of any kind—you can succed better without. If I wish to reduce a horse in flesh in the least possible time, I should bleed and physic. If you have time to spare, it will better employed in scalding or grinding your grain, and feeding warm mashes, Ac. It appears that friend Munson ias little faith in our no-doctoring advice. If he finds the oil to answer, I adivse him to stick to it, for if he docs nothing worse than to pour a pint of grease down a horse that has a touch of be'ly-ache, he will hardly loose any. 1 have knowu it employed f°r thirty years—it is like mush to a stoue bruise—dues no good or harm.— Prarie Farmer. POTATO BREAD. —A lady correspondent at the West, whom we recognised as a good wri ter in days of yore, when we were schoolmates together, sends us the directions below. We are partial to well-made " potato bread". It may not be generally known that the starch in potatoes is a healthful and admirable snb titute for " hog's fat" in making bread tender or" short," as well as sweet. We suppose it breaks up and overcomes the toughness of the glutei), abundant in all flour, and especially in that grown at the South.— ED. " On the aftcruon proceeding baking day, prepare the yeast as for any bread—hop yeast or brewer's emptyings. With the supper fire, boil some cleanly washed, impeded potatoes, say twelve medium-sized potatoes, .for two common loaves. One advantage here is that " small potatoes" can he used. When done, pour off the water; peel and mash theui well, stir in from a pint tu a quart of tionr, accor ding to their moisture, an 1 let it scald ten minutes. Then add sufliceut cold water to make the mixture milk-warm. Add the pre pared vcast, and let it stand in a warm place over night. A common tin pail answers well for the mixture. In the morning, strain the whole through a coarse seivc or cullender in to the flour. Stir into stiff sponge or batter, and let it rise ; then mix iuto dough, adding 11 tea spoonful of salaratus, and as much salt. Leave it in one loaf to rise again, keeping it in a warm place. When light this time, mould into loaves, and put into pans for bak ing. Now, if not made too hard, it only needs to stand fifteen minutes or half an hrur, be fore it is ready for the oven. Bake nicely, and you have a loaf worthy of a baker.—Amer ican Agriculturist, April, To PROTECT DRIF.D FRUITS. —If fruit is put into good linen or cotton bugs, and tied up tightly immediately after drying, and baked a couple of times during the season, by putting the bags on a board ia the oven moderntelj warm, keepiug them in a dark closet in the meantime the worms will not disturb tlicm. Another excellent way to procure them from worms, is to procure empty litjuor barrels and pack them in, after drying in the full, and cov er theui up tight, or put them in other bar rels, and add a little whiskey or brandy as you fill them up. ABOUT — A swarm of bees' in tlieir na tural state contains from 10,000 to 50,000 of the insects, while in hives they number from 50,000 to 40,000. In a square foot of honey comb there are about 0,000 cells. A queen bee lays her egg, for fifty or sixty consecutive liays, laying about 500 daily. In one season a single queen bcc hatches about 100,000 bees. It takes 5,000 bees to weigh a pound. INDIAN PCDDIXU. —Take eight table spoon fuls of fine Indian meal; pour into it one quart of boiling milk, with six eggs, one nut meg, and six onuccs of butter. Bake this quantity in three common sized dishes. DITCII DITFKT.—(For tea,) one pint of milk; three eggs ; one cup of butter ; a teaspoon of aaluratus j flour enough to make a spoon stand in it ; half a cup of brewer's yeast. This is better than sally luun.
