Cultivation of the Prairies.
Sanford Howard, of the Boston Cultivator,
in one of his letters from the " Great \\ est,"
to that paper, 4 tlie following accounts of
the first operations in prairie fanning.
" The first object with a farmer on taking
up a prairie farm, is to plow the ground. r l he
natural vegetation dot s not make a close sward,
like some of the cultivated grasses, hut the
roots are very tough, and considerable force is
required to sever them. A plow of peculiar
construction is used. It is sometimes made
wholly of steel, but a steel share is indispen
sable, as no other metal will hold an edge
keen enough to do the work properly. Ihe
shape of the plow is adapted to turning a
wide shallow furrow, it having been ascertain
ed that the sod rots much quicker when the
furrows arc thin. The beam of the plow is
supported on two wheels, which gives the im
plement a steadiness of operation. The im
plcment is, on the whole, well adapted to its
purpose, and the work by it is, in some instan
ces, nearly unexceptionable. The furrows are
cut of uniform width and depth, the sod com
pletely inverted, and left in such a manner that
decomposition must take place in the least pos
sible time. Oxen arc generally used for break
ing the sod, from three to five yoke being put
to the plow, ami from an acre and a half to
two and a half acres arc plowed in a day.
The plowing is done whenever it is convenient
to do it. If it is done in the summer, the
soils gets rotted sufficiently by spring to cross
plow it and sow wheat, or it is in good condi
tion for coru. If it is plowed in autumn, or
early in the spring, it will answer for " seed
corn." Holes are opened in the furrows with
an axe, and the seed corn dropped in. From
that time to harvest the field is not touched.
The sod is so tough that it is of no nse to try
to use any inplement of cultivation on it. Such
corn sometimes yields thirty bushels to the acre,
and an average auuual yield is fifteen to twen
ty bushels.
" The soil becomes pretty thoroughly rot
ted during the first season, and the ground is
easily plowed afterwards. It becomes, in tact,
too loose for either wheat or grass. This may
not agree with ideas of some people who are
always talking about the necessity of a loose
soil, but the fact can't be " rubbed out." An
average yield of corn, after the first season,
and sometimes a hundred bushels to the acre
arc obtained.
BLIND OR WOLF TEETH IN HORSES.—I wish
some of your subscribers would inform me
through THE CULTIVATOR, whether young liar
ses have what the farmers here call Wolf
teeth. I was told a few days ago, that two
of my promising colts had Wolf teeth, and
that if they were not knocked out soon, they
would soon go blind. Any information will
much oblige.
JNO. M. E. YAI.K, Menthuc B/tiJf, TV
In no work on the diseases of horses, as we
know, is what are called "blind teeth," noticed.
The first notice we find by a southern writer
as follows
" There occurs in some horses, between
the ages of three aud six, between the bridle
tooth and grinder, a small, long tooth , without
roots, and not iuserted iu a socket but merely
in the gum of the upper jaw. It lias never
been alluded to in any system of farriery, but
our planters can trace its existence in this
State for more than half a century.
" It may and doubtless does occur in hor
ses of any shaped head, but iu the eases on
my own farm, it was iu horses of dished heads.
One had gone entirely blind before I was ap
prised of the cause, and the other two I re
lieved by immediately extracting the llind
teeth. U uudreds of instances could be adduced
to the cxistanec of blind teeth, and the des
truction of sight when not extracted. No
horse has ever becu seen with them at a ma
ture age, having good eyes.
" It is conjectured by some to be peculiar
to Indian corn feeding ; by others, to hot cli
mate. The three casts under my owu obser
vation were in horses raised on my own farm ;
and not having ever seen any illustration else
where, I am inclined to believe it is confin
ed to the South."
The publication of the above brought us scv
al statements from different parts of the coun
try, all the writers agreeing that the "blind
teeth" were the cause of blindness, ami that
they should be extracted as soou as discover
ed.
STABLE MANAGEMENT OF HORSES. —It is one
thing to know how to use a horse, hut it is
another thing to know how to take care of
him. A stable horse needs special care and
attention. His feeding must be as regular, as
measurement of hours. When change of feed
is made, it must be done with great care, giv
ing a small allowance at first, until the stom
ach becomes used to the change. He must
be cleaned every day ; and when we say clean- j
cd, wc mean all that can lie conveyed by that I
word. A good curry-comb, brush, and AII oil
ed woollen cloth, arc the utensils necessary.
First take the curry-comb, and begin at the
top of the neck, back of the ears, working the
hand both ways. Proceed in this way, till
you have gone over the entire body and legs.
Thcu take both comb and brush, and follow
the comb with the brush, and after every
other stroke, draw the brush across the teeth
of the coml), to clean it. Au cxpcrinced
groom will do this instantaneously. This done,
lake your cloth and lay the coat, and remove
the dust, which adheres to the outside. The
face and ears must also feel the brush.
Few men now how to clean a horse pro
perly. If the aijove directions arc followed,
daily, your horses will enjoy go<xl health, gen
eraly. Stabled horses, must be exercised dai
ly. This is absolutely essential to good health.
If the feet of yonr horse arc brittle, and are
liable to break and crack, they mtist be well
oiled, once a week. A horse thus treated,
will always be ready when wauted, and you
will nothc ashamed either to ride, or drive
him.
Another thing quit as important, is a clean
and well ventilated stable. We cannot excuse
any farmer, or horse owner, who does not
clean his stables twice a day. A stable should
be so constructed, as to have a wide passage
way or floor in front, to feed from. Above
the manger a space should be left, a foot or
two in width, clear, at>d the passage-way
should be the avenue for the supply of fresh
air to the nostrils of the horse.
A bore enjoys a good bed, and it should
take vimr
