    farmer's geprtnuut.
Get in Root Crops.
We write under the settled conviction that
the profits of the general farmer may lie more
rapidly increased under a judicious cultivation
of the various roots, and in any other way ;
that more than double the value per acre may
be obtained from them than from hay croj s,
and more even, than from the small grains or
Indian corn.
The cultivators of England have long under
stood this secret, and have became prosperous ,
under its teachings. No man, probably, from j
this country, ever gave the subject so much at- j
tention as did Mr. Webster, during his mission
in England. And few men, in our judgment, j
have done their country so signal a service as ;
he did by his investigations of this subject, and i
by promulgation oi' the facts which lie learned. J
They awakened attention, and the fruits of j
his suggestions are now manifest all through j
N'cw England, at least.
Of the turnip there is a great variety, and
their cultivation is too well understood to need
any explanation of ours. For winter and spring j
use, many persons prefer not to put in their
root crops until after the third week in June.
We would prefer a little earlier date.
We are gratified to notice that the cultiva
tion of the sugar beet is beginning to eniist the
attention of farmers. Those who have made
a trial of it, speak of it in terms of approbation.
It is not only very productive, but one of the
best roots that can be fed to milch cows and
young cattle—causing a rich flow of milk in
the former, and great vigor, sprightliucss and
hardihood in the latter. There is probably no
climate in the world more admirably adapted
to the cultivation of the sugar beet than that
of New England. In no case which lias fallen
under our observation, have those who have
planted it failed of securing a paying crop,
while in most eases it has yielded a greater
profit than any other product of the farm.
It should be planted in drills, on good, deep,
and rather warm soil, well stimulated with
rich iuvigoratiug manure, and should be care
fully hoed and kept clear of weeds. The soil
between the rows, and between the roots in
the rows, should be kept light, in order to
facilitate the absorption of those fertilizing a
geuts from the atmosphere upon which in a ve
ry great measure, the perfect development
and maturity of tlie system are found to de
pend.
A mechanic having a cow, and but a small
piece of ground from which derive the means
of sustaining her, cannot do much better than
to plant a portion or the whole of it to sugar
beets. He will in this way secure more salu
tary aliment for his animal than in any other
way. and at less expense. From eight to thir
teen hundred bushels have been taken from
au acre, and in several cases the crop lias
amounted to fifteen hundred. The roots at
tained a large size, and are very nutricioii>
and wholesome. Swine fatten rapidlyoll boil
ed beets, aud the pork made on this food is
said to be more solid than that made on pota
toes or any other root. We would advise eve
ry one this season to put in a small plot of
this vegetable, aud give it a trial. —AV/r J*up
land Farmer, March "J 1.
Operations for April.
NURSERY. —Stocks that were budded last
fall, should now be examined, and where the
buds are good, head back the stocks to within
a few inches of the bud. lv leaving a few
inches, the bud will make abetter growth, and
it answers the good purpose to tie the shoot to,
should it be inclined to strike off at an angle
of 45 Degs.
Plant apple, pear, plumb, cherry and quince
stocks, for budding in the fall. 11 peach pitts
were laid down in the fall, they will not re
quire to be cracked, but will lie found to be
starting finely in the seed bed, from which
they may be planted into the nursery rows.
IMant the cuttings of the Angers and French
quince for stocks, for pears, also cuttings of
grapes, currants, gooseberries, Ac.
ORCHARD. —Continue pruning, grafting and
cleansing the trees. If there are any spaces
to be filled, place them in good trees of choice
varieties. Examine t lie roots of peach trees,
if any worms are under the bark, take them
out, cover the wounds with earth and let them
lieal.
GARDEN. —In looking over the beds of as
paragus and rhubarb be careful not to injure
the crown of the plants. Sow early peas as
soon as the ground is sufficiently settled.
If cabbage, tomato ami other plants in the
liot-bed are disposed to grop up tall and slen
der, transplant them into other beds that they
may become stout, strong and healthy when
moved into the open air.
l'runc the roots and other shrubbery ; put
the grapes in order on trellises.
Early Pens are among the first tilings to be
sown, and this should be done as soon as the
frost is out. of the ground. Some writers re
commend raising pea plants in boxes in hot-beds,
and transplant them, but we never found this
to pay for the trouble. The best way is to
select the warmest, driest soil and the most
sheltered position in the garden, and sow in
drills (running east and west if possible) two
inches deep. Two rows, twenty feet long, will
take about one pint of seed, and will be
enough of one variety for the first sowing
As soon as sown, place a wide board on edge
011 the north side of each row, inclined over
the rows at a slight angle, and support at
each end with sticks. This will afford a good
shelter, and the ground will become quite
warm, having the full benefit of the sun while
sheltered from the wind.
These boards may be taken away when the
plants are two or three inches high, and the
earth drawn to the plants. This drawing of
the plants should be repeated several times,
as it is a great protection preventing injury
from the wind. When eight or ten inches
high they should be staked, and of course, tlie
length of the stakes or brush depends upon
the variety sown, some sorts growing only two
or three feet high, and others live or six feet.
The stakes should be placed ou both sides of
the rows, slanting inwards so that the tops will
meet, and so firmly set in the ground that
they will not blow over.— Moore s Rural New
Yorker, March 28.
Recent experiments prove that a fre
quent cause of smut in wheat is the heating
ot the seed iu the mow. One who has tried
reeomiueuds to let the wheat stand until
quite ripe before cutting, and then put it on a
scaffold until fully cured. The wheat raised
trom the seed thus treated was not injured by
