liim by a vote of one hundred and ten to forty two. The minority vote was mostly a partisan vote. The exculpation was based on the disbe lief of Sweeny's testimouy and a distrust of Triplett's. This decision goes a good way to ward destroying the case agaiust Gilbert, which rests almost entirely on the testimony of these two witnesses. It is also a severe blow at the action of the committee, whose intelligence or impartiality is greatly impugned by it. WASHINGTON , March 1, 1857. The Senate sat until a very late hour on Saturday night and finished up two more of the Appropriation bills, namely : A small De ficiency bill and the Legislative, Judicial and Executive bill, amounting to about $6,000,- 000. The House closed its proceedings on the In vestigation. As soou as it met in the morn ing Mr. I'd wards having resigned, nothing re mained to be done but to expel Tripiett and Simonton, which was done, the Committee and House coolly throwing them away after using thecn, like two sucked oranges. More Border Ruffianism in Kansas ! ST. LOUIS. Wednesday, Feb. 25, 1857. The Jefferson City correspondent of The St. Louis Democrat, learns from the passengers from Kansas to-night that a serious difficulty had arisen between Gov. Geary and Judge Sberrod, growing out of the refusal of the former to appoint the latter Sheriff, as desired I by the Legislature. Shorrod had avowed his | intention to kill the Governor, and, meeting 1 him shortly afterward in the street, spat iu his ; face Geary did not resent this, but his friends ; got up an indignation meeting on Thursday, | the 10th, which Sheriff Jones, Judge Sherrod and others attempted to brake up, when a con- [ tiict ensued, in which Sherrod shot Mr. Shep- j pcnl, one of Gov. Geary's friends, four times, killing him, and wounding two others. Mr. I Joues, the Governor's Secretary, then shot; Sherrod, the ball passing through his head and killing him instantly. Very great excitement i existed at Lecompton, and a general fight was i anticipated that night. Gov. Geary's resi- j dunce was guarded by United States troops. ST. LOUIS, THURSDAY, Feb. 26, 1857. Mr. Sherrod or Sherrard i 8 the man who was appointed by the Court to fill the vacaucy occasioned by Sheriff Jones's resignation, and to wliem Gov. Geary refused to grant a com- 1 mission, on the ground of his habitual drunk-1 tailless. The Westport correspondent of The llepublican says that Sherrod did not spit in i tin- Governor's face, but called him a liar, \ cow ard and scoundrel. The remainder of the j report is not yet corroborated, nor is it contra dicted. We look for letters lroru Lecompton tonight. ST. LOUIS, Saturday, 28, 1857. Accounts from Lecompton state that Gov. Geary, having visited the Territorial Legisla ture, was assaulted at the door by Sheriff Slier rod. While leaving, Sherrod insulted Geary , and spit oil him. He had arms, and it was supposed it was a plot to assassinate the Gov- j eruor ; but be was prevented from using his arms. The Council condemn the outrage by reso-' lotion, while the House fully sustains Sherrod. j A law has passed both branches to punish 1 rebellion with death. All resistance to Ter- : ritorial law or authority is declared rebellion; j Gov. Geary fears assasination, and sent yes- ; terdav for the troops at Tccumseh to remain ; l ure for his protection. A detachment of j dragoons have gone to arrest Capt. Walker. J ST. LOUIS, Saturday, Feb. 28, 1857. The latest advices from Kansas state that j Sherrod was not killed, and that the Mr. Jones who was arrested was not the Governor's Sec retary. lie had been held to bail in $5,000. RAILROAD PICKPOCKETS.—On Monday even ing as C. L. WARD, Esq., of Towanda, was on bis way up from Philadelphia in " lightning : line," on a visit to Wheatland, he had his |octet book with its contents, stolen by some of the "light fingered gentry." There have been a great many depredations of this kind com mitted on the railroad, of late, and there is no doubt that a gang of pickpockets, artfully disguised, travel with the cars, mix in the crowd at the depots, pjck'pockets, and then disappear with the train oa which they came.— ligtrris- UiTfr Telegraph.
