How TO USE G UANO. —The London Mark
I.auc Express gives the following directions
respecting the use of guano :
First. —Never mix it with anything ; all j
lime, compost, ashes, ami similar ingredients, :
too often contain enough caustic alkali to drive j
off the animoniaeal parts before the soil can ,
surround and absorb them. A vast amount ;
of mischief and loss often follow this sad mis
take. If applied alone, the soil will best adapt
it for plants. _ . 1
Seecnd. —Mix as much as possible with the
seed, not too deeply, but plow it in after sow
iiijF it broadcast, unices it be for beans or drill
cd 4 and ridircd crops, when it nin\ be sowu ou
the surface before the ridges arc made
Third. — If applied as a top dressing, al
ways apply it, if possible, before rain, or when
snow is on the ground ; and if on arable land,
harrow, hoe, or scuffle, if possible, immediate
ly after the operation.
Fourth. —The best mode to apply it is by
water. A slight solution of it is by far the
most powerful and speedy application.
Fifth. —If sowed with drilled grain, or in
deed anv seed whatever, it should never come
in contact. It is not a bad plan to sow luoad
cost, after the corn-drill, and then harrow, as
it is kept in the nearest proximity to the seed,
without coming in contact with it.
Lastly.— Be sure to get, if possible,
ttine article ; cheap guano there is none.
The quantity of genuine guano per acre nsed
is from two to three hundred pounds. The!
latter quantity when the land is deficient aud
requires speedy renovation.
FARM AND GARDEN SEEDS. —The business of
seeds for the farm and garden is one of so much
iuqiortauce, and yet is so little regarded by
many, that it requires special notice, and should
be urged upou the consideration of the thought
ful and careful cultivators of the soil. Much
of the skill iu culture fails of its due reward in
consequence of imperfection in the seed planted
or sown.
The law of nature, that " like begets like,"
is as true of the vegetable world as of the ani
mal kingdom. In selecting seeds for field and
garden culture, reference should always be had
to plants or grains that have attained tlie high
est perfection iu growth and maturity. In sav
ing seed corn, the farmer should select, when
busking, the best and most perfectly dcveloji
cd ears, choosing from stalks that bear two
or three ears when it can be done, thus secur
ing yielding qualities. So of wheat, rye, oats
and barley, select the largest aud best heads.
A man who adopted this method in wheat cul
ture, greatly increased the yield of his wheat
per acre. His custom was, to go through his
wheat field and select the longest heads that
were well filled, thereby multiplying the long
heads iu future crops. So of other grains.
Varieties of corn and other grains, roots,
bulbs, Ac., of the same species designed for
seed, should generally be kept separate in cul
tivation. If you have an extraordinary varie
of corn, never plant it near an ordinary varie
ty, if you would prevent deterioration or " run
ning out," as the farmer says. In perfecting
a variety by experimenting, something is gain
ed sometimes by mingling varieties. After
having attained tlie degree of improvement de
sirable, then keep the variety thus improved
separate from all others, while cultivating for
tlie sake of crops, for market or use, either for
bread or feedding.
A full, and well-matured kernel of wheat or
corn will send up, when planted, a stronger
plant with broader leaves, containing more vi
tal power than seed of an imperfect or infe
rior kind. As vigorous and healthy animals
w ill grow, thrive and fatten 011 keeping that
the uiore delicate would continue lean and lank
upon, scarcely more than deriving a bare sub
sistence ; so of plants, whether corn or some
other grain, the vigorous seedlings grow and
thrive, while the feeble weaklings lack energy
to penetrate the earth and derive the nulri
tion necessary to perfect the plant. Always,
therefore, select the best roots for seed, whe
ther beets or any other, and continue to do so
from year to year, thus progressing towards
perfection.
Gather your seed when pcrrcctly ripe, in
fair weather, and carefully dry it before put
ting it away for future use. In so doing, you
preserve the vital power of the seed. When
properly prepared, put them in bags or papers,
if garden seeds, label them and store them in a
good place for future u<c.
In buying seeds of whatever varieties, strive
to procure tlie best—and such as are free from
weed seed of every species and variety. The
want of proper care in this respect has result
ed in tlie extensive propagation of many nox
ious and troublesome weeds. In seleetiug
beans, and peas for seed, procure tlie largest
pods. Thus have subsequent crops been great
ly increased and improved.
What has now beeu said will serve, perhaps,
to awaken greater care and attention, to tlie
exceedingly important business of selecting,
saving and storing all kinds of roots, bulbs,
grains, Ac., designed for future planting and
sowing, in the field and garden. Far too lit
tle atteution has hitherto been given to this
subject. Bear in mind, that, if you would have
healthful and vigorous plants, you must give
special heed to the business of saving and pro
curing seeds. " Like begets like." Men do not
usually gather abundant harvests from imper
fect seeds or seeding. Now is the time to at
tend to this subject, so far as it relates to the
latter harvest. L. TV.—

ADULTERATION OK FLOUR.—A few weeks ago
a baker in Montreal, Canada, returned twelve
barrels of Hour out of twenty he had purchas
ed, because there was so much Plaster of Par
is iu it that lie could not use it.
A Toronto miller, in speaking of this says
there arc numerous dealers in flour and mill
offnl in Quebec, Montreal, Kingston, Coburg,
Toronto and Hamilton, whose business is to
buy up empty barrels of such mills as are con
sidered the manufacturers of the best quality
of Gour, into which, with the original niili
brand upon thorn they pack tlie most inferior
quality of (lour they can purchase, and now
tlicy have even descended to adulterate that
by admixture of plaster. He says he knows
men at Toronto who are making fortunes by
taking the best quality of flour from the bar
rels in which it had been placed after the in
spection and branding, and replacing it with
uu article that is little, if any, better than
shorts.— Newburyport Herald.
