"FISH AND PHILOSOPHY."
OR. JOHN M'INTOSH,
Would inform thr inh ihitants nf Bradford county j
that he respectfully solicit* 600 uh-cril>erA for hi- 1 fal ;
work entitled " FISH VXD PHILOSOPHY, or Sketches !
made During a Short Sojonrn in Northern Pennsylvania."
The hook will mn-it of from 250 t 300 pages, 12m0.,
and will l>e bound in emboved muslin. The iiriec will l>e
* 1,00. \s the work was not written to vindicate
any particular theory, IT to advance any parti ciilar inte
rest. it is difficult to say what it aims at—further than to
help while away a leisure hour r two, in what the An- I
thor hopes, not unprofitable rending.
The pages are chiefly devoted to descriptions of local
scenery ; incidents while Trouting on the Schrader branch: j
literary criticisms and reminiscences : conversations, de
velopments of local character, poetry and philosophical
reflections.
As the publication of the book is not a question of
bread, tiir author can use the liliorty ol sneaking plain—
In the first place, then, he cannot aft rd to publish the
book unaided--mo - would he if he eonld f for the simple
reason, ho is unwilling to shoulder the responsibility of
committing a—possibly—poor book to the world. He
therefore seeks to make a corporate concern of it. and
thus share with the subscribers the odium of failure,
should it fail. It is a purely gratuitons matter, gentle
men, sign, or not sign. In the second place, the author
is unwilling to have his stock of hooks added to. by too
many hundred copies of a work that failed to redeem the
price of its publication : neither does he desire (hehorror
of witnessing the awful spectacle of an auto-da-fe, of what
cost hira so much pains and time to create ; —for he cer
tainly would commit to the flames what remained unsold
of the edition, .should they remain too long on his hands.
He is determined to pay the publisher on the receipt of
the edition, should it be printed, asking no favors ; and if
(100 subscribers can be had. he will do so. He can afford,
however, to wait, should the GOO refuse to come to the
rescue. The MS will not diminish in value. It will ro
main as it has done, cherished by the owner, as was cher
ished and loved '-the poor man's one little ewe lamb, that
was unto him as a daughcr." The author will ask no one
to undertake to publish it on the strength of it merits :
perhaps from pride, perhaps from a prophetic apprehen
sion of its lack of merit. Time—perhaps—will determine
If be did well to he influenced by the latter consideration.
The author will further say, that should the desired num
ber of subscriptions he obtained, he will foel tempted to
pr-unisc an ciulx-Hislied frontispiece,enclosing a medallion
likeness of the principal character. Dr. I'lam. And should
a second edition follow, he—the author—will exert all'the
influence ho can command to secure for the. original sub
scribers a lock of that distinguished individual's hair ; as
thank Heaven, he is appreciative, and, judging from his
antecedents, the anthor has no doubt that Plum would
gladly wear a wig for a whole year, to have the pleasure
of furnishing to his friends so interesting a souvenir.
The publication of the book, then, is dependent on the
receipt of 600 subscribers, and one month will be allowed
for names to be given in. If. at the expiration of that time
only one person has subscribed, or anv other number be
tween that and 600—unless very closely approximating it
—-the book will not of course be expected to see the light.
But, if the entire number be obtained, those who have
signed, will, in three months from the closing of the sub
scription lists, be supplied with a copy, or copies, as tliey
may have ordered.
Subscription lists will be opened on Monday next.at all
the stores, and at the P. O. in the borough ; and at C. H.
DERRICK'S, at Athens. At Burlington, there will lie oue
at Messrs. Long A M Tory's store, and nt lister Mr. JOHN
MATHER , and at Monroe, Mr. SEYMOUR PHINNEY, will act
as agents. Others may be authorized.

HELMUOLD'S GENUINE PREPARA

Helmbold's Highly Concentrated Fluid Extract Huchu,
for Disease* of the Bladder and Kidneys, See vet Di-caecs,
Strictures. Weaknesses, and all Diseases of the Sexual
Organs, whether in Male or Female, from whatever on use
they may have originated, and 110 matter of how long
standing.
If you have contracted the terrible disease, which when
once seated in the system, will surely go down froiu one
generation to another, underniiuiug the ( (institution, and
sapping the very vital fluids of life, do not trust yourself
in the hands of Qatuks, who start up every day in a city
like this, and till the papers with glaring falsehoods too
well calculated to deceive the voting and those not ac
quainted with their tricks. You cannot be too careful in
the selection of a remedv in these cases.
The fluid extract Huchu has been pronounced by emi
nent Physicians
THV: GREATEST REMEDY EVER KNOWN.
It. is a medicine perfectly pleasant in its taste, and very
innocent in its action, and yet so thorough that it annihi
lates every particle of the rank and poisonous virus of this
disease; and, unlike other remedies, it does not dry up
the disease in the Mood.
Constitutional Debility, brought on by self-abase, a most
terrible disease, which has brought thousands of the bu
man race to untimely graves, thus blasting the brilliant
hopes of parents, and blighting in the bnd the glorious
ambition of manv a noble vonth, can be enred by this
INFALLIBLE REMEDY'.
And as a medicine which must benefit everybody from the
simply delicate to the confined and despairing invalid, no
equal is to l<e found, acting both as a cure and preventive
HEM HOLD'S HIGHLY CONCENTRATED
Compound, Fluid Extract Sarsaparilla.
For purifying the Blood, removing all diseases arising
from excess of Mercury, exposure and imprudence in
life, chronic constitutional disease, arising from an im
pure state of the blood, and the only reliable and effect
ual remedy known for the cure of Scrofula, Salt Rheum,
Scald Head, Clcerations of the Throat and Ta>gs. Pains
und Swellings of the Bones, Tetter, Pimples on the face
and all Scaly Eruptions of the Skin.
This article is now prescribed by some of the most dis
tinguished Physicians in the Country, and has proved
more efficient in practice than any preparation of Sarsa
parilla yet offered to the public. Several cases of secon
dary Syphilic, Mercurial and Scrofulous diseases have en
tirely recovered in the incurable wards of our public insti
tutions, which had for many years resisted every mode of
treatment that could be devised. These cases furnish
striking example* of the salutary effects of this medicine
in arresting some of the most inveterate diseases, after the
glauds were destroyed and the bones already affected.
Xorict:.—Letters from responsible Physicians and Pro
fessors of several Medical colleges, and certificates of cures
from patients will be found accompanying both prepara
