THE YELLOW FEVER IN VIRGINIA. —The ac
counts of the ravages of the yellow fever in
Norfolk, Portsmouth, and the Uosport naval
station, are becoming truly alarming. The
epidemic is on the increase, and the iuhabit

• Petersburg Democrat, referring to the
of the epidemic in Norfolk and Ports
mouth, says : —ln Norfolk aud Portsmouth
t ~v have had scarcely any rain for two mouths
,Vt aud the boiling heat of a vernal sun has
[rcitared their cities for the disease, making it
literally a hot-bed for the pestilence. In both

formed by throwing logs of wood into the mud

oompel them to occupy. In the course of time
tlic sea which continues to soak through the
j',. s which form the basis of this "made
.rround," gradually rots the wood, and reduces
the whole mass into a state of putrefaction.—
