Tremendous Power oF Air. —The tornado
that recently passed over Lapeer County,
Michigan, was the most violent ever experienc
ed in that State. The damage to the houses,
barns, fences and forests is very great. The
heaviest loss will be the destruction of the
valuable pine and other timber in its course.—
So trreat was the force of the whirlwind that
nothing could withstand it. The giants of the
forest which have withstood the storms of a
hundred years, were wrenched from their firm
roots and tossed about like straws. Even
stump? firmly imbedded in mother earth, were
j orn np and carried many rods. Old logs
which had lain upon the ground for years, were
disturbed and torn from their resting places.—
a ir was literally filled with fence rails,
limbs of trees, hoards, rafters,, shingies, &c.,
which were lifted to an immense higbt. The
course of the whirlwind was in a nearly east
direction, ranging from twenty rods to "half a
mile in width and making a clean sweep as it
went. In some places even the culverts across
the roads were torn up by the tornado, and the
roods generally are filled up with a promiscuous
assortment of timber and rubbish of all kinds.
An eve witness says the whirlwind presented a
mo st singular appearance. He says the wind
would rise in an immense whirl, drawing up
rails, limbs of trees, boards, leaves, dirt, &c\,
to a great hight, when suddenly it would seem
to drop again to the earth and feed itself with
a new supply of such thing as were moveable
and again rise, carrying np with it substances
of great weight.
A Slave Born of a W iiite Woman Freed
by a Virginia Court. —The Richmond En
quirer of the 15th inst gives the following
account of a very interesting case which has
ken decided in the Botetourt Circuit Court :
" Eliza Crawford and five children, colored,
suing for their freedom. The case was decid
ed in favor of the plaintiff's ; the evidence
being full and complete that the chief plaintiff,
Eliza, was born of awhite woman of Georgia.
She is now about thirty-five years of age, and
has been in slavery between fifteen and twenty
years, ller appearance indicates that her
father was a mixture of African and Indian.
She is now the mother of six children, all of
whom were plaintiffs, excepting the eldest, who,
never belonged to defendant, and who, it is
said will now be set at liberty without resist
ance. Tht-re was no evidence, however to,
show that the defendant was in way privy to.
or accountable for, the injuries done the plain
tiffs." _
Failure of a Savings Bank. — lmmense de
faliCatioxs. —The Lancaster (Pa.) Savings In
stitution has "Collapsed," and it is said that
the cashier is a defaulter to the amount of a
quarter of a million. The Lancaster Herald
says :
•' The defalcation, it is said, reaches the en
ormous amount of between $250,000 and
$250,000. Mr. Bonghter was arrested and
committed to the county prison at an earlv
hour on Tuesday morning. During the day
the excitement was intense, but the word of
the directors having been pledged that a full
statement of the affairs of the institution would
be made public at the earliest practicable mo
ment, it was to a considerable extent allayed.
'• The property owned by Mr. Bonghter is
estimated to be over $lOO,OOO ; his bail is
$20,000, and the capital of the institution is
$50,000, which must all be absorbed before the
dejiositors can lose anything. It is supposed
the loss to the depositors will not exceed $lOO,-
000, which will be less than 25 per cent."
Horrible Murder in New-York.—On Mon
day morning last, about 2 o'clock, a woman
named Margaret M'Daniel, who resided at No.
4. Baxter-st, was murdered by her husband,
Edward M'Daniel, who cut her throat with a
razor in such a manner that she died in a few
hours afterward. It is thought that M'Daniel
was temporarily insance at the time of com
mitting the awful deed. He and his wife, as
now appears, went to bed late, after offering
up a prayer to their Creator, and remained
quiet until the time named, when he, as is al
leged, got up, and seizing his wife by the throat
with one hand, inflicted the violence with the
other. She screamed, and rolling on the floor
at the same time, bled profusely, and died in
a few minutes afterward. The "alarm was rais
ed, and officer O'Connor of the Sixth Ward
ran into the house and arrested M'Daniel,
whom he locked up in the Police Station. The
accused is shoemaker, and is said to be com
fortably well off in the world.— X. Y. Tribune.

" Mr. S. M. Booth, of the Milwaukie De
mocrat haf been served with a notice or citita
tion, signed by Chief Justice Taney, to appear
bt-fore the United States Supreme Court at
Washington on the Ist of December next, in
pursuance of a writ of error issued by that
tribunal, to show cause why the judgment of
the lowa State court in his favor— in the so
called habeas corpus case—" should not he
corrected." Mr. B intimates rather decidedly'
that it won't be convenient for him to go."

The following Resolutions, as unfinished business, will
be considered :
Resolved, That there ought to be in each township, a
School Officer, whose duty it shall be to inspect Teachers
and visit the Schools in his respective township, either in
connection with the County Superintendent, or alone.
Resolved, That the study of Written Arithmetic should
not be commenced by the child until he is of sufficient
age to fully appreciate and perfectly understand the prin
ciples of the science, and it should always be preceded by
athorough drilling in Intellectual Arithmetic.
Resolved, That every Teacher should be a subscriber
for, and a constant reader of, some Educational Periodi
cal ; and also it is his duty to attend, if practicable, edu
cational meetings, and iu all other ways seek his own im
provement in the subjects to be taught, as well as the best
and most approved methods of teaching.
Resolved, That we respectfully and most earnestly so
licit the hearty co-operation of all the School Directors of
the County in carrying forward the great work of educa
ting the rising generation.
Resolved, That Teachers should he sufficiently acquain
ted with Physiology, and the laws of health to be able to
guard with care the health of those committed to their
charge.
Resolved, That it is the imperative duty of every teach
er to sustain good order in school, and adopt such means
as shall secure that important en<T, even if it become ne
cessary to resort to corporeal punishment.
Mr. COLT proposed the following amendment:—
That order is essential to the success of a School. In
maintaining this corporeal punishment, should be a lent
resort, but vet its infliction may be the imperative duty
of the teacher.
The Committee on Text Books will make a partial re
port.
An Essay will be read by Miss FANNY 0. ANDUCS, of
Smithfield. Prof. JAMES M'WILLIAMS will deliver an Ad
dress before the Association.
Essays are solicited from members—particularly !

lying as it does withiu 2j miles of the Barclay Coal Com
pany Railroad, now in process of construction and con
necting by said Railroad, with the River and Canal at this
place.

beds of IRON ORE, of a very superior quality and rich
ness, two of which are ten feet in thickness each, yielding
about 35 to 40 per cent, pure metal,and one smaller yield
ing a much greater per cent.; all extending through 1)00
acres of the property. This ore is easy of access, and can
be procured at a very small expense.
