denee Ball, at which the extra patriotism of
all who choose to attend, will have an oppor
tunity to effervesce. We have no doubt from
the ex-sheriffs " antecedents," that this, affair
will he a grand one ; and we advise all who
have not (like ourselves) given up such vani
t;,.s to attend, as we are certain they will find
everything to their liking.
[ For the Bradford Reporter.]
Educational.
It a meeting of the Bradford County Teach
,.r< Association, held at Orwell Hill, on the
stli ami hth instant, it was ordered and decreed
that there be a committee of one male and one
female appointed to prepare, or cause to be
prepared, an article for the Reporter, upon the
subject of popular education, once in two weeks;
a |so a similar committee for the Argus. It
was further ordered and decreed, that your
humble servant should be one of said com
mittee.
\ o w, therefore, in accordance with said or
der and with your assent, I will proceed to
present to your readers a few thoughts, hints
and suggestions, upon school house, their lo
calitv, structure, arrangement and so forth. I
am aware, that I am treading upon a delicate
subject: every tax payer in the County, who
has no children to educate, and who cares no
thing for theeducatiou of the rising generation,
onlv so far as that education will increase the
actual value of lii.s property during his life
time : I say every such person is ready to say,
•ivhv, I do not see but our school house will a -
-•.ver well enough for some years yet—it is us
good as the one I went to school in." Now,
although I may perchance tread upon the toes
of some such person, I shall give my views
plainly.
First as to the locality of a district school
liouse. The general practice is, to select a .
piece of ground that is either in such a shape I
that it is not worth fencing, or so poor that it
will not pay for cultivating ; or else put the
building in the corner where three or more
roads cross each other, so as not to be obliged
to pay anything for the site. Now, would the J
inhabitants of any district select such a place j
for their dwelling houses? When a man is j
about to build a habitation for himself and j
family, does he look for the poorest spot on
hi- farm, because the land occupied by the
Imuse will be rendered valueless for cultivation? j
l!y mi means, the pleasantest ?}>ot on the farm !
i> selected. The place must be easy of access, |
-ightlv, descending in the right direction, and j
free from everything that shall in the least de- ;
grec impair the beauty of the situation. Is it i
not as important to have a pleasant, healthful j
locality for the building in whicli the children
and youth of successive generations are to re- !
■ their education ? It is the duty of the
inhabitants of every district to procure a lot
in a convenient and pleasant part of the dis
trict. of sufficient size to have large play grounds
f"r both males and females, which grounds j
-inmld he enclosed by a neat fence, and taste- ,
lully ornamented with trees and shrubbery. In
selecting a location for a school house, refer- ■
us e should be had to the convenience of ob- I
taming pure water ; and if no spring is near, i
a well should be dug and furnished with buck
ets, so that the scholars will not be obliged to 1
gu a great distance to procure drink, or suffer
with thirst, or trouble the neighbors. It is
sufficiently annoying to those residing in the
immediate vicinity uf the school house to hear
the noise, without being troubled by the scholars |
constant ly running to the well to get water— j
perhaps frequently leaving open a gate, or do
; ing more or less injury to the fixtures of the!
: well, or iu some way annoying and perplexing
[ the owner or his family. The place where our
I youth are to spend their days in study ought
I not to be by the road side, or in the angle be
tween two roads, where they must be annoyed

The Markets, June 14.
The city papers of the latest date, report a
slight decliue in the price of Flour, the lower
grades particularly being depressed. Wheat
is also lower, but Corn seems to maintain its
price. At Buffalo, no falling off has taken
place, holders maintaining former prices.

Resolved, That it is the imperative duty of every teach
er to sustain good order iu school, and adopt such means
as shall secure that important end, even if it become ne
cessary to resort to corporeal punishment.
Mr. COLT proposed the following amendment: —
That order is essential to the success of a School. In
maintaining this corporeal punishment, should be a last
resort, but yet its infliction may be the imperative duty
of the teacher.
The Committee ou Text Books will make a partial re

Au Essay will be read by Miss FANNY O. ANPRCS, of
