Though dark and sad from the scene of strife
The herald confab this morrow,
Thank God no pattlot blood. or life
Add yet to oar cup - of
And though bright genial in her cell,
Think not a nation will sluniber
Which only 'weitsthe *Wee of a Tell"
To invoice the battle thunder!
Oh! where is "young Nosy." "Prince Louis" too,
Could a brighter prospect offer, -
To avenge foul, treacherous Waterloo,
(The glory of Briton's coffer 1)
Go " Ney," and a -people true and brave
Will strike for the death of thy sire—
yea ! in England's blood , bedew bis grave,
• And old Erin with freedom fire!
" prince Louis" go—Old Erin will bide
Thy word, for thy soul inherits
The fire of Napoleon, and at thy side
Wilt arise immortal spirits:
Kik years* of exile, torture and death,
Oh,swear by the martyr of Byron
To revenge at the threshold, and the hearth
Where crouches the British Lion!
"Brave Shields"--others in battle rinound
Will join in the " Lists of glory"
And Columbia's smile-will heal the wound
clf poorEritis bloody story;
Watch well the foe, he'll weary at last,
Then arise with tempest motion,— •
And East, West,N orth, and South at,ne's blast
Will arouse the brooding ocean!
More Wl* Rebellion.
Never since the foundation of patties in thiscouri
try. has there been such wide-spread and open re
bellion in any party as has existed in the Whig
ranks. since the sitting aside of the " gr, eat unavail
able" Henry Clay, and the nomination, on trust o
the " great available" Zachary Taylor. At the mo
ment of the nomination a respectable section of the
party in Ohio, Massachosetts t New York arid other
Rates dissented from the nomination atididoclared
the Whig party dissolved, and almost every week
same new seeds of diesention manifested itself.
Recently Gen. Taylor has written three letters which
have started afresh the ire of the Whigs who make
any. pretentious to consistency. In the letter to Geo.
Lippert!, of Philadelphia, dated July 20, 1848. he
reiterates his original declaration, that " he will not
be the candidate of a party." In his South Carolina
letter he says he would have accepted the nomina
tion of the Baltimore Convention, and in his Chock
taw letter. he actually accepts with great satisfaction
the nomination of a "large and respectable" mee
ting, which nominated ZueharyTaylor for President,
and Wm. 0. Buffer for Vice President. This_ last
act of the old General has'earriedle. onstemationint o
the ranks of the 'friends of Millard Filmore of Ne w
York. A call was immediately issued at Albany,
a large meeting of faithful Whigs held : the letter of
General Taylor denounced, and a Committee ap
pointed to report' at a subsequent meeting.
Now we submit, was ever a party in our coun
try placed in such a humiliating position:as this!
The following are the letters ofGen. Taylor re
ferred to above. The first was written to a friend
in Charleston, and is,as follows:
"1 never had any aspirations for the Presidency
nor have I- now, farther than the wish'ef my friends
are concerned in the matter nor would I have it
on any other terms than I stated when - the subject
was first agitated, which is, that 'my acceptance
must be without pledges of being trammeled in any
war, so that I could be the President of the whole
nation and not of a party.
" I have accepted the nomination of the Philadel
phia Convention astwell as the nomination of many
primaky assemblies gottenup in various sections of
-the Union, in some instances irrespective of party,
and would hare accepted the nomination of the Balti
more Concention had it torn tentlerod on the samt
trrins. tam -fully, if not fairly, before the country
as a candidate for the Chief Magiiitracy, and if it
should be my good or bad fortune to be elected, I
trust my course will be such for the most part, as
regards the management of our National affairs, as
will meet the approbation of -my fellow citizens.
Should they fail to do scy they will, I flatter my
self, have the charity to attribute my errors to the
head and not to the heart.
Very restectiully, your Friend,
Z. TAYLOR
She following is the letter in response to the
South Cambria meeting that nominated Taylor and
Butler, and in it the readers will observe that he re
pudiates the Philadelphia norninatpn, as a party
sumunatimi, and says it "was generously offered to
hun without pledges or considerations. The generous
Whig party renounced all their principles, repudi
ated all their great leaders and generously offered
Gen- Taylor the nomination of their Convention;'
without pledges or considerations." What ccmdeseen-

Sin : I have the honor to acknowledge the recept
of your communication of the 26th ult., official
announcing to me my nomination for the Presiden
-47" a large meeting of the Democratic citizens
of Charleston, South Carolina," held in that city on
the 20th oh and over which you were the presi
ding officer.
This deliberate expression'of the friendly feeling
existing towards me among a large and respecta
ble portion of the citizens of your distinguished
State, has been received with emotions of profound
gratitude; and though it be but a poor return for
such a high and unmerited honor, I beg them to
accept my heartfelt thanks.
Concluding that this nomination, like all others
ickick hate had the honor of receiving frons a.ssens-
Unger-if my jelow•cilizens in wiriousparts of die Uni

pledges or conditions, it is thankfUlly accepted. And
beg you to assure my friends in whose behalf
you are acting, that should it be my lot to fill the
office for which I have been thus nominated, it
Mall be my unceasing effort in the discharge of its
re+ponsible duties to give satisfaction to my coun
trymen.
'With the assurance of my high esteem, I have
the honor to be, your iferv't, ' Z. Tsvion.
The friends of Filmore, at Albany, were thrown
into a high stale of excitement by the appearance
of this letter. The Telegraph" brings us the follow

A large meeting of the Whigs was held here
last evening, to take into consideration the letter of
Gen Taylor accepting the nomination made in
South Carolina for the office of President pn the
Ra me ticket with Gen. Butler, Wm. - Parmelee pre
sided assisted by James Kidd and others, its Vice
Presidents. The letter was read, and Messrs. John
A. Collier, till. Haswell, Judge Carpenter, of (k
-sego, and Lewis Benedict, jr., spoke strongly in de.
ennciation of Gen. Taylor's reply as insulting to
Mr. Filmore, and the Whigs of the North.
A committee nn resnintiOns, was appointr4l to
report on Monday evening ; in order to give time
for consideration.
The feeling of the meeting Was decidedly in fa

The movement is understood to have the coon
