    TILE PRESIDEIM—We have had occasion
several times to renibrk upon the, jndustrious
habits and close application to-business of, the
p r esident of the United States. Being c o rn.
ivelv a young mail. enjoying gaud health.
antPP; - -
accustomed from early youth to these liahs
its, he is most - indefatigable rn giving his per
'anal attention to all branches of the public ser
vice; and that too, more in detail than perhaps
anv of his predeeessorsihave hien able, from
their more advanced age, to bestow upon them.
With many of these details ho has become fa.
wilier. He is found daily in his office irom
an early hour until late in the evening.
4 . s the country has been enlarged, and its
population increased. the duties and responsi•
hairier' of the presidential office have been
greatly augmented ! In the midat of business
he receives the visits of the thousands w h o
throng to the capitol at this season of the year.
and is courteous to all, whether they call to pay
their respects. or on-business, taking care to
neglect no public duty which requires his at
tention.
No inconsiderable portion of his time is con
sumed in reading the immense. correspondence
which he receiveedaily. To answer the thou
sands of letters from correspondents who re
quest answers is physically impossible; nor
has it ev r been attempted by any of his pre
decek, irs. Were the President to abstract his
whole time from other more important duties,
it would be imp - ossible Tur him to respond to
more than one in ten of his tiuuieruus mows .
poodents. We mention the fact, that it may
b e generally known, and that answers ought
not to he expected by the thousands of persons
who address letters to him. But, though he
can not answer them, the public may be assur
ed that nu letter on business requiring his at
tention is neglected.
PANTALOONS AND SCANDAL.—The Boston
p piers, state that one night recently a gentle
tam in Charlestovin. on the opposite side of
the river, left home to go to the theatre, but
changed his mind ankreturned at nine o'clock.
Soon alter he had retired to bed, his wife com
plained of being very ill, and begged him to
get her some brandy. Alarmed, the good man
hastily dressed and hurled to the shop, where
h e purchased the desired drink. and putting
lint hand in his pocket took from it a quarter of
a dollar, as he supposed—all he had in change.
h e wag positive. The shopkeeper gave him
her dollars and seventy-five cents in change.
The piece was examined —it 51 as a half eagle.
The gentleman felt again in his pockets and
Lund over $2OO there. tie looked sharp at'
the anwhisperables—they were not his own—
while those be had doffed in going to bed were
among the missing.
