INTOXICATED AND FEEEZIHB.
Terrible Plight of an Old Couple In the
West End.
The manager of the Clinton Mills was
notified yesterday by several neighbors of
Daniel Hansbury who live in Clinton Bow,
"West Carson street, that he and his wife
had not been seen since Monday, and it was
feared some ill had befallen the couple. A
man was sent to break open the door, and
upon gaining an entrance and going up
stairs the sight revealed was most horrible.
There, lying in bed in a room without any
fire, with no clothes to cover them, and in
the company of several cats, dogs and
chickens, was the couple in a drunken
stupor and half frozen to death. A man
was dispatched for coal and a fire started.
The Department of Charities was notified,
and Chief Eliot sent Inspector Dirhe to in
vestigate the case.
"It was the dirtiest place I have ever
seen," said Diehl alter-his return -to the
office. "You would have thought the peo
ple were colored from their appearance,
there were cats, dogs and chickens ail around
the room and and the filth was revolting.
At first, when aroused from the stupor.
They both refused to go to the Poor Farm
as I suggested, but after a little persuasion
and the assistance of Father McTighe we
persuatled them it was the best thing for
them to do."
The ambulance will be sent to the house
to carry the old couple to the City Farm
to-day.
