THE PJTTSBURG- DISPATCH, illlDAY, DECEMBER 23, 1892.
BOYS FROM OLD TALE.
Brilliant Reception Arranged for the
Glee and Banjo Clubs.
US IMPORTANT SOCIAL EVENT.
Informal lance at the Pittsburg Club After
the Concert.
iHE FAETI TO KEMAIN OYER STODAY
If the tky has any respect for the fitness
of things it will be blue to-day,for that will
be the prevailing color in Pittsburg. The
reason for this is that the Yale Glee and
Banjo Clubs will land in town at 10:30 this
doming. They will come in their two spe
cial cars, the Cleopatra and a sleeper, in
which for a couple of weeks they will lfve
and sleep, when they are not singing and
thrumming to the public, or dancing or din
ing with their hospitable friends in the big
cities at which they stop.
The annual tour of the clnbs began yes
terday, when they boarded a Pennsylvania
Irain at Jersey City and journeyed to JHar
rieburg, where they left the cars and at
once proceeded ior rehearsal to the Grand
Opera House. This work over they
attended a tea given in their honor
py Mrs. Haldeman. In the evening
the first concert was given at the' Opera
House to a large audience. The concert
went ofl smoothly and almost everything on
the programme was encored, so that
lingers and musicians alike had excellent
appetites for the supper given by the
Alumni Association, and alter that were
ready enough to sleep in their cars as the
train carried them on to this city.
A Social Event of Importance.
The preparations for the entertainment
of the Yale men here have been elaborate,
and as a social Junction alone the concert to
night will be of great importance. Tbe
concert is to be given in the Carnegie Hall
in Allegheny.
There are '22 voices in the glee club and 14
instruments in the banjo club. J. S.
CraTens is the President of the glee club,
and J. J. Brooks, Jr., son of the well-
.Known attorney who resides at 32dgeworth,
is the President of the banjo club. The
reports lrom Yale indicate that the
clubs are both above the average this year
in ability. A good many ot the members
took part in last year's tour. They will be
glad to know that the audience will be
above the average also in many ways. It
looks as if there would not be a vacant seat
in Carnegie Hall to-night. The audience
will be an unusually pretty sight, for not
only will the fair sex predominate, but
fem'inine charms will not be overshadowed
by hats and bonnets, or veiled by envious
high-neck dresses.
A Dance at the Pittsburg Club.
This will not be so much the result of any
special provision that those who attend tbe
concert shall come in lull dress, as that a
majority, at least, of the audience will pro
ceed lrom Carnegie Hall to the Pittsburg
Club, where an informal -dance will be
given, under the auspices of the Yale
Alumni Association, immediately .after the
concert. The Carnegie Hall lights up well
and will form an attractive frame for the
thousand or more society people who will
certainlv be there.
But the Yale men will have plenty to do'i
pcsiacs piay ana sing wmie iney are in
Pittsburg. This evening before the con
cert early dinners will be given for them
bv Jlrs." "Walter AlcClintock and Mrs.
Charles L. Fitzhugh. The ball at the Pitts
burg Club will occupy them after the con
cert On Saturday an early evening recep
tion will be given for them by Miss Mabel
Clarke at Mr. Charles J. Clarke's Oakland
residence, after which they will go to
another reception at Mrs. D. A. Stewart's
in Allegheny.
Objects of Social Attention.
Jt is altogether likely that their spare
moments will be absorbed by the scores of
people in both cities, bound by all sorts of
ties to Yale, and who are eager to entertain
the repiesentatives of their alma mater.
Fortunately they will have a chance to en
fov the inimitable calm of a Pittsbure Sun
day before descending to the grosser atmos
phere of Cincinnati, which is their next
halting place,
A glance at the itinerary of the clubs is
enough to convince one that their pilgrim
age is anything but a penance. Between
now and January G they will give concerts
at Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Chicago, Cleve
land, BuCalo, Rochester, TJtica and Al
bany, and in all these cities alumni asso
ciations and other hospitable hosts will en
deavor to fill their wakicg hours withfeasting
end social festivities of all kinds. It is
worth while to remember, however, that the
object of this tour could hardly be better,
ior the money which is made by these con
certs is turned over to a fund designed to
assist needy students through the TJniver
Mty. Every year a large sura realized bv
lhe hard work ot the Glee and Banjo Clubs
for binging and playing of the sort these
young artists give can only be accomplished
by long hours of practice, and the concert
in itself is an uncommonly stiff grind is
dispensed by the faculty of Yale privately
among the undergraduates whose purses are
fclim.
A Supreme Justice for President.
The Tale Alumni Association of Pitts
bifrg has at present a membership approach
ing a hundred. The officers are: The Hon.
George Sluras, President; Albert Childs
end the Bight Rev. Cortlandt Whitehead,
Vice Presidents; Kier Mitchell, Treasurer;
John Moorhead, Secretary; and E. W.
Smith, Oliver D. Thompson. Bemsen V.
Siessler, Hemy OlrVer, Jr., and A. G. Mc-H
Ulintocs, Directors. Judge Shiras and
Bishop Whitehead always make a point of
attending the Yale concerts, and they will
Hot miss this one.
The Yale Alumni have worked like
beavers lor tbe success of to-night's con
cert. The ball, or as it is modestly termed,
the informal dance, to be given by them at
the Pittsburg Club, will be a beautiful
eight The staie of the theater will
"be screened with holly. Toerge's Orches
tra will furnish the music. Even if the
sky does not put on Yale colors, the weather
teems likely to be as seasonable as. could be
"wished.
