he publishes certain leaaTnfr frames, known to-day
as openings, and It goes a long way to prove that
all of tlie standard openlnjrs of to-day were In prac
tice then, and how much earlier we hate no means
of knowing. Buta few vearsago the finds" of
EsTPt take us back about 2.800 years further than
our bpanlsh authority. 'The embalmed Pharaoh,
KamescsIII.. of the twentieth Eftvptlan dynasty,
who Is supposed to have lived 1.200 Tears belqre
the Chrlatiau era. was disinterred at the village of
Buiat, well-known suburb of Cairo, In the pres
ence of the Khedive and other notables. The
chamber of death has been careiully laid bare by
competent hands, and we see his deed recorded
on the walls, his enemies trampled under his feet,
etc. Then In another sculpture we see him enjoy
ing his spare time In playing checkers with a favor
ite. What game lie was plavlng will ever remain
a conundrum, as no record "of Barneses' problems
has come down to us." Th above can afford
very little comfort to those who claim to be tbe
first to give this or that line of play, etc.

It is expected that about 39 competitors
will enter the Scottish National Tourney,
which commences in Glasgow on January i,

they show up against the "cracks."
II. F. McAteer is not satisned with abus

McCall, of Glasgow,Scotland. But his vent

well known to be hurt by such unseemly
attacks. And the Herald checker column is
the best in tlie world. Deny A'ews.

New Yobk, Dec. 22. Spedd. The
Evening Post publishes to-night the follow
ing table giving the fall vote for President
in all the States. The most striking ieature
of these figures is the small increase of the
total vote in 1892 over that in 1888. Dis
regarding the scattering and nondescript
ballots, the records during the last four
Presidental contests show these totals for
the Republican, Democratic, Prohibition
and Greenback, Labor or People's party as
it has been variously called: 1880, 9,218,251;
1884, 10,052,706, 1888, 11,370,662; 1892, 12,

This would make Cleveland's plurality in
the country 391,379. In this estimate,
though, the Post credits the 85,181 votes
cast Jor the unpledged electoral ticket in
Alabama to "Weaver. This was the ticket
indorsed by the Republican National Com
mittee, and, if successful, the electors
would have voted for Harrison. Most au
thorities, therefore, hold that these 85,000
votes should be added to tbe Republican
column in figuring the popular plurality.
A similar question affects about 5,000 votes
in Texa. These changes would make
Cleveland's plurality in round numbers
500,000.
